I enjoyed being in nature. Visiting nearby natural places made me feel better when living alone in Rio de Janeiro. To find different communities that had unique relationships with nature, I moved to Manaus in the Amazon Rainforest to feel the energy of the forest and see the local people’s integration with the forest. I discovered we can have many relationships with nature that aren’t always detrimental to those places.
They took care of the land and cultivated these gardens filled with fruits and nuts we loved eating without harming the forest. I think many people unaware of how the local communities have shaped a “completely” natural space. The Amazon Rainforest is not just created by natural processes.
Doing research in the field could be a big challenge. We often went to really isolated places when doing field work in the Amazon Rainforest. We were aware that if anything happened to us, we could die. If a venomous snake were to bite you out there, you would be in a dangerous situation. We needed to manage those feelings while doing our work and collecting data.
I worked on an article about how we could engage native knowledge in conservation science. We had held small meetings with five native researchers, talking about how they viewed the Amazon Rainforest and trying to understand how we could maintain the Amazon Rainforest in the future. These conversations led me to start reflecting on how we did science.
I submitted our paper to two other scientific journals before it was accepted. At the time, I didn’t feel that the article was good enough to be published in a major scientific journal like Science. I tried other journals and was rejected immediately. My coauthors and supervisors said that we had nothing to lose by submitting it to Science. We tried again and they accepted it. That experience has showed me that we need to commit ourselves to what we think we should do. We cannot give up when it comes to science. We need determination.
24. What does the underlined word “detrimental” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Similar. B. Relevant. C. Harmful. D. Beneficial.
25. What impressed the author most about Manaus
A The locals’ care for nature.
B. The change of natural processes.
C. The local communities’ relationships.
D. The situation of the Amazon Rainforest.
26. Which of the following can best describe the author’s field work
A. Tiring. B. Risky. C. Costly. D. Demanding.
27 Why does the author mention the experience of submitting the paper
A. To reveal backgrounds. B. To establish credibility.
C. To highlight challenges. D. To demonstrate resolve.

It appears that language can have a fascinating effect on the way we think about time and space. A growing number of experts believe language can influence how we think just as our thoughts and culture can shape how language develops.
Cognitive scientist Lera Boroditsky, one of the pioneers of research into how language influences our thoughts, has shown that in English and many other European languages, people typically view the past as being behind us and the future in front of us. But in Aymara, spoken by the Aymara people who live in the Andes in Bolivia, Chile, Peru and Argentina, the word for future means “behind time”. And when the Aymara talk about the future, they tend to make backward gestures, whereas people who speak Spanish, for example, view the future as being ahead of them and make forward gestures.
Languages also encode time in their grammar. In English, for example, the future is one of three simple tenses, along with the past and the present — we say “it rained”, “it rains” and “it will rain”. But in German, you can say Morgen regnet, which means “it rains tomorrow” — you don’t need to build the future into the grammar. The same is true for many other languages, including Mandarin (普通话).
But does this affect how we think In 2013, Keith Chen, a behavioral economist at the University of California, Los Angeles, set out to test whether people who speak languages that are “futureless” might feel closer to the future than those who speak other languages. And he discovered that speakers of futureless languages were more likely to engage in future- focused activities. They were 31% more likely to have put money into savings in any given year and had accumulated 39% more wealth by retirement. They were also 24% less likely to smoke, 29% more likely to be physically active, and 13% less likely to be medically obese (肥胖的). This result held even when controlling for factors such as socioeconomic status and religion.
It is becoming increasingly clear that language is influencing how we think about the world around us and our passage through it. And while being multilingual won’t necessarily make us a genius, we all can gain a fresh perspective and a more flexible understanding of the world by learning a new language.
28. What do the Aymara tend to do when they talk about the future
A. They keep stepping forward.
B. They look backwards now and then.
C. They put their hands behind their backs.
D. They point their hand backwards as a gesture.
29. What did Keith Chen want to find out by carrying out the study
A. How the future tense is used in different languages.
B. How language affects the speaker’s sense of the future.
C. How speakers of different languages overcome language barriers.
D. How people distinguish between “futureless” and “future” languages.
30. What can we learn about speakers of futureless languages
A. They are anxious about their future.
B. They can hardly control their weight.
C. They look forward to their retirement.
D. They like to prepare for the future.
31. What does the author encourage us to do in the last paragraph
A. To learn as many languages as possible.
B. To find similarities between languages.
C. To know the world better through a new language.
D. To change the way we compare different languages.

A wearable health monitor developed by Washington State University researchers can reliably measure levels of important biochemicals in sweat during physical exercise. The 3D- printed monitor could someday provide a simple and non- invasive (无创的) way to track health conditions and diagnose common diseases, such as diabetes, kidney disease or heart disease.
Reporting in the journal, ACS Sensors, the researchers were able to accurately monitor the levels of volunteers’ glucose (葡萄糖) and uric acid (尿酸).
“Diabetes is a major problem worldwide,” said Chuchu Chen, the first author of the paper. “I think 3D printing can make a difference to the healthcare fields, and I wanted to see if we can combine 3D printing with disease detection methods to create a device like this.” For their new health monitor, the researchers used 3D printing to make the health monitors in a unique, one- step manufacturing process.
The researchers used a single- atom catalyst and enzymatic reactions to enhance the signal and measure low levels of the biomarkers. Three biosensors on the monitor change color to indicate the specific biochemical levels.
Sweat contains many important chemicals that can indicate health conditions, but, unlike blood sampling, it’s non- invasive. Levels of uric acid in sweat can indicate the risk of developing kidney disease or heart disease. Glucose levels are used to monitor diabetes.
But the amount of these chemicals in sweat is tiny and can be hard to measure, the researchers noted. While other sweat sensors (传感器) have been developed, they are complex and need specialized equipment and expertise to make.
When the researchers compared the new monitors on volunteers’ arms to lab results, they found that their monitor was accurately and reliably measuring the concentration of the chemicals. The researchers are now working to further improve the device design and validation. They are also hoping to commercialize the technology.
32. What does Chuchu Chen stress
A. The application of 3D printing in real life.
B. The way to make 3D printing develop quickly.
C. The integration of 3D printing and medical technology.
D. The change in people’s health caused by 3D printing.
33. What can we know about sweat from the text
A The chemicals in it can reflect health conditions.
B. Using it to monitor different diseases is invasive.
C. It contains some chemicals that cause heart disease.
D. The researchers find it difficult to measure its amount.
34. What is the advantage of the health monitor over other sweat sensors
A. It’s easier to operate. B. It’s more specialized.
C. It’s more commonly used. D. It’s more environmentally friendly.
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. 3D printing is used to monitor diseases
B. Sweat can help treat some common diseases
C. Blood sampling isn’t as accurate as sweat monitoring
D. A sweat health monitor measures levels of disease markers

Tiffany’s difficulties began last year when she had guests at her home for Thanksgiving and then again for Christmas. Her husband had been in medical school and was now in the second year of his medical residency. Because of the long work hours required of him, he was not able to help her as much as they both would have liked, and so most of that which needed to be accomplished during this holiday season, in addition to the care of their four young children, fell to Tiffany. She was becoming overwhelmed, and then she learned that one who was dear to her had been diagnosed with cancer. The stress and worry began to take a heavy burden on her, and she slipped into a period of discouragement and depression. She sought medical help, and yet nothing changed. Her appetite disappeared, and she began to lose weight. Her family and friends prayed for her and tried desperately to help. They delivered her favorite foods in an attempt to keep her physically healthy, but she could take only a few bites and then would be unable to finish.
On one particularly trying day, her husband attempted in vain to persuade her with foods she had always loved. When nothing worked, he said, “There must be something that sounds good to you.”
Tiffany thought for a moment and said, “The only thing I can think of that sounds good is homemade bread.”
But there was none on hand.
The following afternoon Tiffany’s doorbell rang. Her husband happened to be home and answered it. When he returned, he was carrying a loaf of homemade bread. Tiffany was astonished when he told her it had come from a woman named Sherrie, whom they barely knew. She was a friend of Tiffany’s sister Nicole and had been introduced to Tiffany and her husband briefly several months earlier when Nicole and her family were staying with Tiffany for Thanksgiving. Days later, Tiffany began to regain her appetite and feel hopeful about the future and she owed it to that loaf of bread from Sherrie.
Tiffany decided to visit Sherrie to express thanks.

Sherrie’s words revealed the reason why she delivered her bread and love to Tiffany.

【答案】Tiffany decided to visit Sherrie to express thanks. Wondering what kind of person Sherrie was, Tiffany knocked on the door. The door opened, and Sherrie appeared with a heartwarming smile which made Tiffany feel at ease a lot. During the caring conversation on Sherrie’s couch, Tiffany couldn’t help but ask: “Sherrie, how do you know about my condition in the first place ” Her words were met by Sherrie’s gentle smile. “Because I heard about it from your sister, and a good person like you deserve a fine pack of bread.” replied Sherrie.
Sherrie’s words revealed the reason why she delivered her bread and love to Tiffany. Being a kind and loving person, Sherrie would always share love and concern with people around her. Tiffany felt a strong sense of hope insider her mind, not only because of the homemade bread Sherrie made her, but also the love she received along with the heartwarming bread. Tiffany decided not to waste such a kindness, and she would pass on the love from others with her own action.
