The scene in the stands at Roland Garros’s Court Philippe-Chatrier was dotted with red banners, adding a glow to the already orange y air spreading the red clay court.
There were hundreds of Chinese waving flags to support Qinwen Zheng, 21, who would soon take gold by defeating Croatia’s Donna Vedic in the women’s singles tennis final.
As she lay down on the dirt, eyes skyward and fists extended into the Paris haze, the win’s gravity seemed to register: This was China’s first-ever Olympic gold medal in this sport. When talking about the Olympics, Zheng said, “I treated the Games differently — the emotion, the fight, the mentality. If you asked me to stay three more hours to fight, I could do it.”
Born in 2002, Zheng started playing tennis at age seven. At age eight, she moved alone for better coaching. Since adolescence, she has deeply admired Chinese athletes, such as the tennis star Li Na, who joined the 2008 Beijing Games, and the runner Liu Xiang, who won gold at the 2004 Athens Games.
“It was really tough,” Zheng said, looking back at those early days. “My mom used to come visit on weekends. When she left, I would hold her leg and cry. After 13, she decided to stay with me full-time to let me have better growth and care. After that, it got easier. And we moved to Europe when I was 17.”
In Paris, Zheng performed exceptionally well on her road to gold, including toppling world number one Iga Swiatek. “With Iga, I was clear,” Zheng said. “I know why I lost to her before. I played rushed, made too many unforced errors, and wanted to hit faster than her. I wanted to prove my power. But in these Games, I didn’t think like this.”
Zheng is conscious, too, of the effects that her milestone achievement in Paris will have. As we wrapped up our chat, she said, softly: “I was reading comments last night and some of them were talking about inspiration, and this makes me feel proud. If you watch my tennis and it brings you some extra strength in your life, that will make me happy.”
4. According to the passage, which is TRUE about Qinwen Zheng
A. She considered all tennis games to be equally important.
B. She felt confident to live alone at her early days of training.
C. She secured the first Chinese Olympic tennis championship.
D. As a teenager, she wanted to go beyond other Chinese athletes.
5. What does the underlined word “toppling” in the 6th paragraph mean
A. Challenging. B. Defeating. C. Discouraging. D. Declining.
6. Which words can best describe Qinwen Zheng
A. Competent and idealistic. B. Creative and independent.
C. Sincere and ambitious. D. Strong-willed and reflective.
7. What can we infer from Qinwen Zheng’s words in the last paragraph
A. She feels delighted to read numerous comments on her match.
B. She expects her achievement to motivate more people.
C. She takes pride in attaining the Olympic gold medal.
D. She hopes that her achievement will earn her fame.

Recently, after I gave a virtual presentation on my book Indistractable, a listener wrote something in the Zoom chat that drove me crazy, “This is great but wouldn’t work for me. I’m a Gemini (双子星座的人).”
Ironically, the Zoom listener is right. If she thinks she’s incapable, she’ll prove it correct — whether it has anything to do with the stars and moon or not. Her inflexible self-identification denies her the chance to improve her life. It’s incredibly self-limiting.
That’s why we should stop defining ourselves as fixed identities and nouns, and instead start describing ourselves using verbs.
Words are powerful. Linguistic research shows that language shapes people and culture; it can also give us insight into ourselves and our behavior. In a well-known study, researchers Robert Rosenthal and Lenore Jacobsen had all students in the same elementary school take a standard IQ test. Then they randomly selected a group of students, regardless of their test results, and told teachers the group would show “dramatic intellectual growth”. Eight months later, those students scored significantly higher on an IQ test. The study concluded that teachers’ positive perception of students correlated to those students’ high performance on intellectual and academic tests. The labels the children received became a sort of self-fulfilling prophecy (预言).
That’s because language shapes expectations, which shape our reality. If we have experiences that lead us to label ourselves with specific nouns during our life, then we are likely to stick with those labels and the behaviors that go with them.
Using verbs to identify ourselves is an effective method for releasing “trapped priors”—a term in psychology for a perception of reality that’s affected or trapped by past experiences. Verbs are action words well suited to describing short-lived behaviors that can and do change. They don’t lay claim to our entire identity, but they acknowledge that we are people first and foremost, not whatever a singular noun may say we are. So, instead of saying, “I am a procrastinator (拖拉者)”, you should say, “I am a person who often procrastinates.”
By focusing on our behaviors, not fixed characteristics, we can release harmful perceptions of ourselves that hold us back from trying methods that might improve our lives — like those that can help us achieve the critical skill of being indistractable.
8. What does the author want to show through the example of the Zoom listener
A. The concept of flexible self-identification.
B. His confusion about the way to self-identify.
C. His understanding of proper self-identification.
D. The negative effects of using nouns to define oneself.
9. What does the well-known study imply
A. Self-fulfilling prophecies change over time.
B. Encouragement promotes students’ improvement.
C. Language usage will have an impact on teaching.
D. IQ has little to do with students’ academic performance.
10. How are teachers expected to evaluate students
A. By highlighting their behaviors.
B. By focusing on their advantages.
C. By analyzing their typical characteristics.
D. By assessing their academic performance.
11. Which can be the best title for the text
A. Nouns are more powerful than verbs
B. Your words can determine your future
C. How we define ourselves really counts
D. Our option of words reflects our identity
D
Nine out of every ten humans are right-handed, an imbalance that researchers for decades have attempted to explain, without definitive success.
One of the ideas considered is the traditional fighting hypothesis, which suggests that left-handedness provides an advantage in battles, despite an overall hit to physical health that keeps lefties rare in the population. Indeed, males - who historically have competed most strongly for resources and mates - are left-handed at slightly higher rates than females. Moreover, studies suggest that lefties tend to outperform right-handed people in fighting sports as well as in sports that require hand-eye coordination (协调) like tennis, baseball, and volleyball. However, the predicted health disadvantage of the traditional fighting hypothesis hasn’t materialized in large studies. On the whole, left-handed people don’t seem to suffer from more health problems than right-handed people, nor do they live shorter lives.
Noticing this issue, scientists from Lund University in Sweden proposed an update to the fighting hypothesis that is more in agreement with current data. According to their new fighting hypothesis, about three-quarters of the heart is situated in the left hemithorax (单侧胸), making the left side of the chest a more obvious target for a mortal blow. The researchers note that when humans battle with weapons, the hand utilized to hold the weapon determines which area of the chest is exposed to an opponent. A left-handed grip will rotate the left side of the chest, and thus most of the heart, toward an enemy, while a right-handed grip will rotate it away. Moreover, a free left hand could be used to hold a shield (盾) in battles to cover most parts of the heart.
“Since there is no health disadvantage from being left-handed and fighting with pointy weapons is no longer an evolutionary pressure, we should see the proportion of left-handed people stay the same in modern society or broadly rise. Some studies suggest that left-handedness has increased in the 20th century, but it is uncertain if this is due to genetic or cultural reasons,” the coauthor Matz Larsson said.
It should be noted that this new explanation for the preponderance (多数) of right-handed people is still very much a hypothesis. The modified fighting hypothesis is reasonable, but as yet unproven.
12. Why does the author write the second paragraph
A. To describe the advantages of left-handed people.
B. To explain the difficulty in studying left-handedness.
C. To stress the significance of the traditional fighting hypothesis.
D. To point out the drawback of the traditional fighting hypothesis.
13. What can we learn from the new fighting hypothesis
A. Left-handed humans might be more accurate in targeting enemies.
B. Left-handed humans might be more courageous in fighting battles.
C. Right-handed humans might be more protected from a deadly strike.
D. Right-handed humans might be more skillful in using pointy weapons.
14. What do Matz Larsson’s words show
A. More and more people are taught to be left-handed.
B. Modern society pays little attention to who is left-handed.
C. The increase in the number of lefties is influenced by many factors.
D. More weapons are designed for left-handed people in modern society.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards the new fighting hypothesis
A. Objective. B. Dismissive. C. Approving. D. Unclear.

Everyone possesses intuition. ____17____ Intuition serves as a communication channel between the subconscious and conscious mind. It’s fueled by real information, just like any other decision. The workings of intuition, including collecting, storing, and assembling information, happen outside your conscious awareness.
____18____ These synchronicities (共时性) could be as simple as someone recommending a book on a topic you’ve been privately reading or receiving an email from an old colleague offering you part-time jobs just after you got hit with an unexpected bill. I was always afraid of water. This fear could not be explained, but I knew that the moment I stepped near any body of water, my legs would turn to jelly (果冻). I would imagine myself drowning in the water and thrashing around (乱扑腾) helplessly. That was why I had never gone into a swimming pool until swimming became a school requirement. My school wanted all pupils to pass a swimming test, and if they could not, then they would have to attend weekly swimming lessons in school, which made me tremble.
Thus, my parents signed me up for swimming lessons at the pool near my house. With great unwillingness, I attended those weekly lessons, and each one was great suffering for me. I was naturally clumsy, and my fear of water did not help at all. Every lesson, I would be spending my time thrashing about in the water, while my classmates would be swimming countless laps effortlessly and even turning over like dolphins in the water. How was I going to pass the test at this rate
In my swimming class, there was an exceptionally athletic girl. Tall and muscular, her name was Kathy. She was the best swimmer in our class and always looked at me with disdain (鄙视), especially when I thrashed about hopelessly in the water.
Once, after a particularly long and hard swimming lesson, I spotted Kathy swimming gracefully in the pool. Gathering my courage, I asked gently, “Kathy, can you teach me to swim ” She stared at me coldly. It was as if I stood at the edge of an endless ocean of inadequacy, my fears appearing like dark storm clouds threatening to drown me. Yet, in that moment, a glimmer of hope flashed within me, a desperate longing for guidance and acceptance. Would Kathy’s icy exterior (外表) melt under the warmth of empathy, or would I remain forever thrashing in the sea of my own fears

5 What does the underlined word “toppling” in the 6th paragraph mean

【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. C

C Right-handed humans might be more protected from a deadly strike.
A. Objective. B. Dismissive. C. Approving. D. Unclear.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. C 15. A

【答案】Dear Chris,
As our unforgettable summer exchange in Paris comes/draws to a close, I’ve compiled a handmade photo album that captures our shared experiences during this summer.
The album is a mosaic of our friendship, with each photo a piece of our story. From our first awkward introductions to our deep conversations over coffee, from our collaborative projects to our exhilarating cheers at the Olympic games, these images document our growth and the bond we’ve formed. It’s a visual diary of our laughter, our triumphs, and the memories we’ve created side by side.
As we part ways, I extend my best wishes for your future and also eagerly anticipate the day you visit China, either for study or leisure. Until then, may this album be a treasured reminder of our time together and the friendship we’ve built.

【答案】参考范文:
To my surprise, she nodded after a few moments of silence. From then on, Kathy stayed back for about an hour after every swimming lesson to coach me. She taught me how to propel myself forward in the water and I gradually gained confidence in the pool. Slowly but surely, I improved under her guidance and encouragement. Four months later, it was time for me to take my swimming test. I jumped into the pool and followed all of Kathy’s advice. I swam gracefully, just like a fish, and passed the test with flying colours.
“Congratulations!” Kathy said when she learnt I had passed the swimming test. I threw my arms around her and hugged her tightly. “Thank you! You’re a wonderful friend! If it had not been for you, I would not have done so well!” I exclaimed. Since then, our friendship has blossomed. We met frequently to have fun with each other, sharing both joy and sorrow. Surprisingly, I grew to love the water. A friend like Kathy is hard to come by. She has a heart of gold and I will definitely treasure our precious friendship.
