Life has gone mostly online for many people around the world. With more people going online during the COVID-19 pandemic, global Internet traffic has become a big problem. Between January and late March. many major cities experienced an increase in Internet traffic.
Video meetings, online classrooms and stay-at-home entertainment have become a daily routine. This increase in traffic is testing the Internet' s strength. In March. major phone networks in the UK experienced mass outages(断供). People were not able to take calls, receive texts or use mobile data.
In the US major telecommunications companies like AT&T said traffic was up 21 percent month over month. Video streaming services like You Tube, Netflix and Facebook have cut their picture qualities and download speeds. This is being done to reduce network traffic jams.
China has seen an Internet traffic increase of around 50 percent compared to the end of 2019. The country's network speeds went down sharply in early February. However, they returned to normal soon afterwards and have been working well. This is due to China’s work in building network infrastructure(基础设施), especially 5G technology. By the end of February, 164,000 5G base stations had been built nationwide. This has given Chinese networks the power to handle increased traffic.
“If there were no such development in the Internet network field. people could hardly enjoy such a colorful life at home. Online working and teaching could never be realized so smoothly," said Wen Kun, an official with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

Nuclear expert Peng Shilu once said that he only did two things in his entire life: one was to build nuclear submarines (核潜艇), and the other to build nuclear power plants. Despite being one of the founding members of China’s nuclear power industry, Peng described himself as playing a tiny role in the task. In fact, he held leading positions in most of China’s early nuclear power projects, from the first-generation nuclear submarines to the establishment of Dayawan and Qinshan nuclear power stations.
Peng was born in 1925 into a family of heroes. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Peng was selected to study chemical machinery (机械) in the Soviet Union. In 1956, when he was about to graduate, he faced a turning point in his life. At that time, the central government decided to select a group of outstanding students studying abroad to transfer to the atomic energy major. Peng willingly agreed, marking the beginning of his lifelong commitment to developing China’s nuclear power.
In 1958, China started to independently develop its own nuclear submarines, and Peng was appointed to take charge of the research and design of the nuclear propulsion system. In the 1980s, China decided to build a commercial nuclear power plant. Appointed as the director-in-chief, Peng once again devoted himself to its preparation and construction.
During his career, Peng held a variety of high-ranking titles. In 1994, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one of the top academic bodies in China.
Peng passed away in Beijing on March 22, 2021 at the age of 96. The Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee awarded the title “Role Model of the Times” to Peng for his contributions.
28. What does the author imply in the first paragraph
A. Peng took interest in nothing but nuclear power.
B. Peng was actually a very modest person.
C. Peng played a tiny role in building nuclear power plants.
D. Peng was the most important figure in the nuclear field.
29. What does the underlined part in the 2nd paragraph mean
A. Focus on. B. Know about.
C. Turn to. D. Research into.
30. How does the author develop the passage
A. By following the time order. B. By showing the great importance.
C. By providing some similar examples. D. By explaining the process of research.
31. Which of the following is the proper title for the passage
A. China Honors a Nuclear Power Expert
B. Peng Shilu Built Nuclear Submarines
C. China Lost a Famous Nuclear Expert
D. A Nuclear Hero Devoted Himself to Helping His Country
D
Scientists have been trying to figure out how to alter the genes of humans for many years, and it looks like they’ve finally cracked (破解) the code. But while this may seem like a great step forward in science, some also believe that it’s one step back when it comes to ethics (道德准则). In August, a group of scientists from the USA and South Korea worked together to successfully edit a human embryo (胚胎) and remove a genetic mutation (突变) that would have led to heart disease, reported The Guardian. This was done with the help of CRISPR, a gene-editing tool that allows scientists to “cut and paste” human DNA.
Although this was the first example of an embryo’s genes being changed successfully, the advantages of gene editing have already been tested in living patients. In 2015, a five-month-old girl from the UK was saved after doctors used edited cells to fight off her cancer. As of today, she’s alive and well. And in the USA last year, scientists managed to remove HIV cells from several patients by editing the genes inside their bodies.
Some people hope that in the future, diseases or birth defects could simply be "edited out”. However, others believe this could lead to so-called designer babies, giving parents the option to choose everything from eye color to intelligence. “You could find wealthy parents buying the latest “upgrades” for their children, leading to even greater inequality than we already live with,” Marcy Camovsky, director of the San Francisco Center for Genetics, told BBC News.
In spite of these ethical concerns, experts say it’s not possible to create the “perfect” human being. Despite the progress scientists have made, we don’t understand human genes enough to give all unborn children great brainpower or amazing singing abilities. “Right now, we know nothing about genetic enhancement,” Hank Greely, a director at Stanford University, USA, told The New York Times. “We’re never going to be able to say, honestly, this embryo looks like it would score high on the two-part SAT.”
So it looks like if we want good exam results, or to impress people with our piano skills, we’ll have to stick with the old fashioned method of plain hard work---at least for now.
32. The underlined word “alter” in Paragraph 1 probably means ________.
A. record B. change C. remove D. increase
33. What was the first successful example of human embryo gene editing
A. A genetic mutation related to heart disease was removed by scientists.
B. A newborn baby with cancer was saved by edited cells.
C. HIV cells were removed from patients9 bodies.
D. Some birth defects were simply edited out.
34. Why do some people consider human gene editing a step backwards
A. They don’t think it is an effective way to fight diseases.
B. They are concerned that it could lead to genetic mutations.
C. They think it could lead to designer babies and increased inequality.
D. They worry that it could make parents abandon children with birth defects.
35. What can we conclude from the text
A. Gene editing is regarded as the perfect way to treat birth defects.
B. There is still a long way to go to fully understand human genes.
C. Gene editing could help enhance human intelligence in the near future.
D. Scientists are pessimistic (悲观的) about the future of gene editing.

第二节 (满分25分)
72. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Last Saturday night, I went to my classmate Frank's home to celebrate his eighteenth birthday. We had a fantastic time enjoying nice food, singing and dancing until late at night. Having said goodbye to Frank and his family, I rode my bike home.
There was nobody in the street and everything appeared so quiet with the street lights already off and the full moon in the sky. Still excited, I was humming a cheerful tune when suddenly I felt the front wheel of my bike run into something hard, which made me lose control of the handlebars. Out of balance, I fell down to the ground. By the light of the moon, I could make out it was a wallet lying there.
I picked the wallet up and opened it. There was a thick wad of cash and several credit cards in it. Looking around, I could find nobody in the dark street. Thinking the owner must be anxious with his wallet missing, I decided to reach him somehow as soon as possible. If I failed to contact the owner, then I would turn to the police for help.
But there wasn't any straightforward information at hand. I took out my cellphone, with whose flashlight I took a closer look at a credit card and on it I happily found the 24-hour hotline of the credit card company. It might be a chance, so I called the credit card company at once and explained that one of their clients named David Smith had lost his wallet, hoping they could offer me his phone number so that I could return it to him. However, I was told they had no right to disclose any detailed information of their clients. So I gave them my name and phone number, asking them to help inform the owner if possible.
Eager to return the wallet sooner, I examined it again and found a gym membership card, which bore a name Mary Smith and a phone number.

1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I took a chance and called the number.

第二节 (满分25分)

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】Para 1:
I took a chance and called the number. A lady answered, who turned out to be David's wife Mary. Having explained why I called, I heard Mary let out a cry of joy. She said her husband had been anxiously looking everywhere for the wallet. I told her where I was and that I'd be waiting there till they came. She promised to meet me as soon as possible and I breathed a sigh of relief. With time passing by, I felt colder and colder standing in the dark street.
Para 2:
Pacing up and down, I constantly looked around. About twenty minutes later, a car flashing its lights approached and stopped before me. Out of it came two persons, who were just Mary and David. Immediately I handed David the wallet and asked him to check it. He did so and gratefully said everything was in place. The couple insisted on giving me some cash in return, but I declined, saying I just did the right thing. Having thanked me repeatedly, they drove off. Bathed in the moonlight, I continued to ride home, filled with pride and happiness.
