He told me that Sherry got the role of Cinderella but I would be the understudy (替角). At the news, I sighed and forced

From a young age, I collected role models. In school, as a teenager, I tried to channel Beyoncé. In the working world, I paid close attention to our female senior managers. By watching and copying others—especially women of color who looked or sounded like me—I gained confidence in my own abilities.
But when I started my own company, my pool of potential role models became smaller. Only 2.1% of risk investment goes to women-founded companies. “Who could I look up to ” I wondered. “Who can I emulate ” I decided to create an inspiration wall in my office, with photos of the role models I could see—women like Oprah, Melinda, and Vicky, cofounder of a skincare brand. I never thought I’d meet these women, but their success gave me hope.
Then one day, a couple of years ago, I surprised myself with a thought: what if I did reach out to one of my role models I feared rejection, but my desire for connection was stronger. I chose Vicky, whose journey had long inspired me. I didn’t have her email address. So I tried a cold Instagram message, and she responded the next day!
That was in 2022. We’ve spoken numerous times since, and the conversations have been invaluable. They’re rare chances to gain guidance from a successful woman. Cars produced today are essentially smartphones with wheels. For drivers, this has meant many new features: automatic braking (刹车), turn-by-turn directions, entertainment systems. But carmakers are getting much more. They’re constantly collecting data from our vehicles, like how much we weigh, how fast we drive, how many children we have and even financial information. But who owns and, finally, controls that data And what are carmakers doing with it?
The issue of ownership is not clearly known. Drivers usually sign away their rights to data. It’s not unlike buying a smartphone. The difference is that most customers have no idea vehicles collect data. We know our smartphones collect data and we’re come to accept that we trade personal information for convenience. With cars, we have no such expectation.
What carmakers are doing with the collected data isn’t clear. We know they use it to improve car performance and safety. And we know they have the ability to sell it to third parties they might choose. The data on your driving habits could be valuable to insurance companies. You may or may not choose to share your data with these services. But while you can turn off location data on your cellphone, there is no opt-out (退出权) feature for your car.
Carmakers use data to warn us when something needs repair or when our cars need to be taken in for
service. For almost a century, car owners have been able to take their vehicles to whichever shop they trust for maintenance and repair. That may be changing. When carmakers control the data, they can choose which service centers receive our information. They’re more likely to share our data only with their branded dealerships (经销商) than with independent repair shops which could have the edge in price and
convenience.
It’s clear, because of its value—as high as $ 750 billion by 2030—carmakers are unlikely to release control of the data collected from our vehicles. Policymakers, however, have the opportunity to give drivers control—not just so that they can keep their data private but also so that they can share it with the people they want to see it. This will let car owners maintain what they’ve had for a century: the right to decide who fixes their car.

Close your eyes and picture yourself walking in the town. You can probably imagine the turns you’d need to take and the landmarks you’d encounter. This ability to imagine such scenarios in our minds is thought to be crucial to humans’ ability to plan ahead and has long been considered as a feature that distinguishes humans from animals. But a new study has found that rats can think about objects and places that are not right in front of them.
Like humans, when rats experience places and events, specific neural (神经系统的) activity patterns are activated in the hippocampus (海马体), an area of the brain responsible for spatial (空间的) memory. In the study, the researchers developed a brain-machine interface (BMI), which allows them to test whether a rat can activate hippocampal activity to imagine going to a location.
First, some rats were placed into a virtual reality environment and were rewarded when they traveled through this environment towards their goals by running on a treadmill ( 跑 步 机 ). At the same time, the BMI system recorded the rat’s hippocampal activity. The researchers could see which neurons were activated when the rat navigated the environment to reach each goal. Next, researchers disconnected the treadmill so that the rats could still see the virtual reality environment, but their running had no impact. By reproducing the brain activity they’d shown during the previous sessions, the rats could navigate to reward locations using just their thoughts.
“Although it’s still unclear what the rat is experiencing while it’s traveling, the team has done a convincing job of showing rats can voluntarily reactivate mental maps of familiar places,” said Shayna, a cognitive neuroscientist.
The research also shows that the BMI can be used to explore hippocampal activity, providing a novel system for studying this important brain region. Because the BMI is increasingly used in prosthetics (假肢), this new work also opens up the possibility of designing novel prosthetic devices based on the same principles.

I could feel that my performance was a disaster. Even Sherry’s lines were better than mine.
