66.Dear Peter,
I’m glad to receive your letter asking for my advice on how to learn Chinese well. I have some advice for you if you like.
First, it is important to take a Chinese course, which will offer you much opportunity to speak Chinese. Then, it also helps to watch TV and read books, newspapers and magazines in Chinese whenever possible. Besides, it should be a good idea to learn and sing Chinese songs, because by doing so you’ll learn and remember Chinese characters more easily. Finally, it is necessary to make Chinese friends. You will benefit from them for you can communicate with them in Chinese.
Try and write to me in Chinese next time
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua.
67. “How about helping pay for their meal ” she wondered. After taking the order, Amy sat down at a table, got out of a pen and a piece of paper and wrote on the paper, “You are my hero; you are the hero of the city. You are always thinking of others, often risking your life to help others. What I can do for you today is nothing compared to what you did last night. I want to express my appreciation to all of you for your heroic conduct.” Having finished writing the note, Amy got up from the table, glancing at the two firefighters with admiration.
Then she went to the cashier and secretly paid for their meal. She asked the cashier not to tell them who had paid for their meal but just give them the note. About half an hour later, the two firefighters finished their meal and went to the cashier to pay for their meal. But they were told that someone had already paid for them. The firefighters looked at the cashier in surprise. The cashier handed them the note. Looking at the note, the firefighters knew what had happened. “Please convey our thanks to this kind person,” said the firefighters. After saying this, they left the restaurant.

Text10:
Attention please, ladies and gentlemen. Our bus is getting close to Cambridge, where we’ll be stopping to eat. We’ll have our lunch in the garden of a restaurant overlooking a small park that reminds people of a very famous tree. It’s said that General George Washington took command of the army in 1775 under its very branches. It was almost 100 years later, in 1864, that the city of Cambridge celebrated the event and from that moment on, the tree was called the Washington Elm (榆树). Later the tree was attacked by insects and finally destroyed in a storm. The remains of the tree were cut down and the growth rings were counted to find out how old the tree was. Well, it seems that if Washington had accepted the command of his army under this tree he must have done so on his knees. This particular elm couldn’t have been over 3 or 4 years old in 1775. It is a well-known fact that Washington took command under an elm tree, but unfortunately it couldn’t have been the famous Washington Elm. Well, enjoy your lunch. Watch your step as you leave the bus.高2024级高一上学期第一学月考试

My roommate Lily was well organised, while I was not. Each of her things had its place, but mine were always hidden somewhere. She even labeled (贴标签于) everything. I always looked for everything. Over time, Lily got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other.
War broke out one evening. Lily came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming. “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder.
The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Lily answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled (爬) under her covers, sobbing. Obviously, that was something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy (同情) rose up in my heart.
Slowly. I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I got so lost in my work that I even didn’t notice Lily had sat up. She was watching, her tears dried and her expression a kind of disbelief. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine. I looked up into her eyes. She smiled at me, “Thanks.”
Lily and I stayed roommates for the rest of the college years. We didn’t always agree, but we learned the key to living together, giving in, cleaning up and holding on.

27-year-old Alexandra Knox, from Newcastle, moved in with Florence Smith after starting a master’s degree. Having quite possibly the largest age gap (差距) of any housemates in the UK, the pair say they hit it off and have a great time living together. They watch afternoon TV together, chat over a cup of tea, and do some of the cleaning together — “It’s no different from living with university students,” said Alexandra.
Florence has lived in the London home for over 50 years. Having retired from her job at the age of 70, and with her family living far away, she was left on her own. To avoid feeling lonely, she signed up for house sharing with Homeshare, the charity which paired her with Alexandra.
“Sharing your home is a great idea. Loneliness is horrible. Having someone else in the home makes a big difference. You don’t have to worry about falling over or hurting yourself. And more importantly, it’s lovely to have somebody to talk to during the day,” Florence said.
Florence added, “I was already 67 years old when my housemate was born, and when I told my friends about it, they thought it was strange. But the more they find out about it, the more they think it’s a very good idea.”
Alexandra said she was originally frightened by the idea of moving to London and living with an older person, but she thinks it has made her experience in the capital much better and has been a great way to cover sky-high rental costs. “It just didn’t seem like the normal thing to do, living with an older person,” she explained. “But now it’s like being with an old family friend. It gives me somewhere homely to come back to in the evening, which is great.”
28.What does the underlined part “hit it off ” in the first paragraph probably mean
A.Have quarrels. B.Get along well.
C.Be bored. D.Get used to new environments.
29.Why does Florence share her flat
A.To support students. B.To cut down on living costs.
C.To get someone to do housework. D.To have someone’s company.
30.What is Florence’s friends attitude to the housemates — Florence and Alexandra
A.Unclear. B.Disapproved. C.Favorable. D.Doubtful.
31.What was Alexandra afraid of at first
A.The study pressure of her master’s degree. B.Living with an old woman in London.
C.The high rental costs in London. D.Being away from her family.

Here is an astonishing and significant fact: Mental work alone can’t make us tired. It sounds absurd. But a few years ago, scientists tried to find out how long the human brain could labor without reaching a stage of fatigue (疲劳). Tod the amazement of these scientists, they discovered that blood passing through the brain, when it is active, shows no fatigue at all! If we took a drop of blood from a day laborer, we would find it full of fatigue toxins (毒素) and fatigue products. But if we took blood from the brain of an Albert Einstein, it would show no fatigue toxins at the end of the day.
So far as the brain is concerned, it can work as well and swiftly at the end of eight or even twelve hours of effort as at the beginning. The brain is totally tireless. So what makes us tired
Some scientists declare that most of our fatigue comes from our mental and emotional (情感的) attitudes. One of England’s most outstanding scientists, J. A.Hadfield, says, “The greater part of the fatigue from which we suffer is of mental origin. In fact, fatigue of purely physical origin is rare.” Dr. Brill, a famous American scientist, goes even further. He declares, “One hundred percent of the fatigue of a sitting worker in good health is due to emotional problems.”
What kinds of emotions make sitting workers tired Joy Satisfaction No! A feeling of being bored, anger, anxiety, tenseness, worry, a feeling of not being appreciated - those are the emotions that tire sitting workers. Hard work by itself seldom causes fatigue. We get tired because our emotions produce nervousness in the body.
32.What surprised the scientists a few years ago
A.Fatigue toxins could hardly be found in a laborer’s blood.
B.Albert Einstein didn’t feel worn out after a day’s work.
C.The brain could work for many hours without fatigue.
D.A mental worker’s blood was filled with fatigue toxins.
33.According to the author, which of the following can make sitting workers tired
A.Endless tasks. B.Physical labor.
C.Unpleasant emotions. D.Challenging mental work.
34.What’s the author’s attitude towards the scientists’ ideas
A.Negative. B.Uncertain. C.Supportive. D.Doubtful.
35.We can infer from the passage that in order to stay energetic, sitting workers need to ________.
A.have some good food B.enjoy their work
C.exercise regularly D.discover fatigue toxins

One morning, Amy was taking orders when she overheard a conversation. “What you did there was great, Mason! It was hard to carry the old lady safely out of the fire. For a moment, I thought you were gone, my friend,” one man said. To this, the other man replied, “Yeah, it was difficult, but that’s our job. And you were the hero today, Gordon. You carried that girl on your shoulder and her dog in your hand. It’s going to be on the front page tomorrow, I’m telling you.”
From their clothing and conversation, Amy knew they were firefighters. And she quickly realized that they had been talking about the previous night’s fire at the old motel on the other end of the road. Then the man named Gordon continued, “I don’t care about being in the papers. The little girl and her dog reminded me of my own daughter.
