第一节 (共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
A
Ideas of making the first week of high school easy
Frank, Aged 21
I think almost every kid feels both nervous and excited before their first day of high school. You will probably love it. I know I did. You should join some sports or activities that will make your high school experience more enjoyable. Good luck!
Sharon, Aged 22
The most important thing to keep in mind when going into high school is to be yourself. Besides, I don’t know what your middle school was like, but high school teachers will not care about things such as how much homework you already have in one night. It’s best to learn to deal with things and manage your time wisely so you can achieve everything you need to do.
Eddie, Aged 20
When I started high school, I was really nervous too, especially since I had been homeschooled (家中教学) all through middle school and didn’t really know anyone. I suppose the best advice would be to just relax. The first couple of days can be a little bit hard, but things will become easier before you know it.
David, Aged 19
I’m not going to lie. The first day is kind of frightening. But you’ll get used to it. Don’t be afraid of anyone; upperclassmen (高年级学生) will pick on you more if you let them know you’re afraid. Just take it easy. Making some friends and staying with them will greatly help you get used to high school quickly. After the first week it’s really not bad at all. Don’t worry.
21. What can we infer (推断) from Sharon about high school
A. Teachers are quite strict.
B. Students often stay up at night.
C. Teachers provide much care for students.
D. Students should make good use of their time.
22. How did Eddie feel on his first day of high school
A. Bored. B. Excited.
C. Worried. D. Relaxed.
23. Who mentions the importance of friends
A. Frank. B. Eddie.
C. Sharon. D. David.
B
“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish, by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”---Albert Einstein
If you have a kid with special needs in the school system, you’re likely to have come across that saying hanging on a classroom wall. My five-year-old daughter Syona has cerebral palsy (脑瘫) and it means, combined with her communication and sight problems, that normal standard isn’t always an accurate measure of her abilities.
By now you have probably heard about Chris Ulmer, the 26-year old teacher in Jacksonville, Florida, who starts his special education class by calling up each student to give them much admiration and a high-five. I couldn’t help but be reminded of Syona’s teacher and how she supports each kid in a very similar way. Ulmer recently shared a video of his teaching experience. “I have seen their confidence increase rapidly.” he said. All I could think was: how lucky these students are to have such good teachers.
Syona’s teacher has an attitude that can best be summarized in one word: wonderful. Her teacher doesn’t focus on what can’t be done---she focuses on what can be done. Over the past several months, my husband Dilip and I have seen Syona’s confidence increase greatly. She uses words she wouldn’t have thought of using before. She recently told me about her classmates trip to Ecuador and was very proud when I understood her on the first try.
I actually wonder what the influence would be if we did something similar to what Ulmer does with his students in our home. We’ve recently started our day by reminding each other of the good qualities we all have. If we are reminded of our strengths on a regular basis, we will become increasingly confident about progress and success.
24.What does the author think of Albert Einstein’s saying
A.Funny. B.True. C.Strange. D.Confusing.
25.What can we learn about Syona’s teacher
A.She is Syona’s favorite teacher.
B.She puts Einstein’s quote on the wall
C.She uses videos to teach her students.
D.She helps increase her students’ confidence.
26.What change has taken place in the author’s family
A.They’ve invited Ulmer’s students to their home.
B.They visit Ulmer’s classroom regularly.
C.They give each other praise every day.
D.They feel thankful to people in their lives.
27.What is the author’s attitude towards Chris Ulmar’s way of teaching
A.Supportive B.Opposed C.unconcerned D.Negative
C
Going from middle school to high school can be difficult, as students are faced with new academic (学业的) and social challenges. Before the first day of high school, there are things every soon-to-be high school freshman and their families should know.
People who have a fixed mindset (思维倾向) believe that they are born to be great or weak. On the other hand, people that have a growth mindset believe that their greatness or weakness is because of their own actions. I totally agree that students should have a growth mindset. I don’t expect any student to move from just passing a subject to an A+. It’s going to take time and focused effort; just keep working on it.
Parents should prepare students to fight the battle “on the pillow” and “in the kitchen”. When I say “pillow” I mean sleep. Not having enough sleep can have some surprising effects on students, including improper behavior, anxiety and poor grades. The second weapon (武器) is eating healthy and balanced meals. Studies show that students who eat nutritious meals and who exercise 60 minutes a day remain more attentive during the school day and experience improved academic achievement and grades. This last “secret” weapon is not to have over-scheduled (安排过度的) time. Make sure students know how to set realistic plans and how to say no to tasks and activities that aren’t important to them.
A lot of students know each other from primary and middle school. They are in their “comfort zones”, feeling they have a sense of control over and expectation of their relationships. But come the first real day of high school, that will all change. The reason I encourage high school freshmen to step out of their comfort zones, though often scary, is that comfort zones get boring and there are many kinds of people to get to know. Let’s encourage them to get involved, have fun and play.
28. Which of the following represents a fixed mindset
A. I’m at the starting point of my potential.
B. My mother is not good at chemistry either.
C. I should start studying a little earlier next time.
D. It’s okay if I fail; at least I’ve learned something.
29. What might the author encourage parents to do
A. To prepare healthy meals for their kids.
B. To praise their kids when they do well in school.
C. To take their kids to visit their grandparents often.
D. To buy soft pillows for their kids to have a good rest.
30. What is the third weapon mainly about
A. Enjoying good health.
B. Owning the ability to say no.
C. Balancing schoolwork and play.
D. Developing time management skills.
31. What does the underlined word “that” in the last paragraph refer to
A. The sense of control.
B. The value of friendship.
C. The feeling that they have control over relationship.
D. The feeling that they become helpless.
D
Having retired from the job at the brewery (啤酒厂), Harold Fry is leading a simple life with his wife Maureen when an unexpected mail arrives. The sender is a former woman colleague Harold hasn’t heard about for twenty years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice (临终关怀医院) and is writing to say goodbye. Harold immediately writes a reply and walks eagerly to the nearest mailbox to send it.
However, there is something inside him that makes him give up the thought of posting and despite Maureen’s disagreement, he starts to walk to the faraway Berwick to meet Queenie in person, lasting 87 days.
I first heard about this book The Unlikely Pilgrimage (特别之行) of Harold Fry when I was watching the interview of author Santa Montefiore. This book was a part of her reading list at her friend’s suggestion, so I decided to buy it in the bookstore during this summer. And undoubtedly I made the right choice!
The book has been divided into several chapters and it is more of a collection of short stories. In each chapter, Harold comes across different people, from a garage girl to a manager in the café, each telling a story and influencing Harold in some way. As chapters progress, you get to see a change in Harold.
When Harold makes this long single journey through the countryside, he eats wild berries and sometimes camps in fields, but my favorite parts are that he often engages (使参与) himself in his past. He looks back to his life, his father, wife, son, and Queenie. I felt this is a reminder for all of us to have a moment of our own during our busy schedule.
For a first novel, Joyce has written an incredible story. From the title of the book to the characters, everything is well organized. The story has the energy of an adventure and at the same time, it’s emotionally inspiring.
I don’t think the adapted film is better than the paper book. It’s one of those books where you feel the characters and their lives not by discussing, but only by reading it.
32. What is the text
A. A book review. B. A moving story.
C. A travel guide. D. A diary entry.
33. How did the author first hear of the book
A. From a bookshop owner. B. From a book.
C. From a friend’s recommendation. D. From an author’s interview.
34. Which part of the book does the author most appreciate
A. Harold’s work experience.
B. Harold’s experiences in fields.
C. Harold’s reflection on past life.
D. The challenges Harold faces along the way.
35. How does the author suggest truly appreciating the book
A. By discussing it with others.
B. By watching a film adaptation.
C. By reading to feel the characters’ lives.
D. By relating it to one’s own life experiences.

In your last letter, you asked about my first day at school. I am writing to tell you something about it.
My school is so beautiful that I cannot think of leaving there for a day. The lofty trees, colorful flowers and the charming attract me a lot. When I first arrived there, I was amazed by its wonderful, peaceful and warm atmosphere. Everyday, my teacher teaches me a lot of knowledge from different aspects such as Chinese, Math, and English. It benefits me a lot. And there are my schoolmates. We play together everyday, making plenty of fun. When we meet trouble on study, we always get together in a group. Talking about the quickest way to solve the problem, we strengthen our relationship. We become better friends. At the same time, we practice our minds.
I believe with the help of the teachers and my classmates I will have a great time in my school.

(开始高中的第一年似乎是一个困难的情况,但实际上它很容易处理。如果你知道该做什么,高中是很有趣的。)”提出高中第一年的困难容易处理,下文4个部分分别提出具体建议,G项“The following advice will help you live an enjoyable senior high school life.(下面的建议将帮助你过一个愉快的高中生活。)”承上启下,引出下文建议,上下文语意连贯。故选G项。

Text 2
W: In my mind, the house will look better painted blue. But Dad thinks it should be gray and white. What’s your opinion

W: Playing hockey (曲棍球) on the ice during the winter is so much fun. It is our favorite game in Canada.
M: I have actually never played hockey. We always play soccer in the grass or basketball on the court. I like soccer the most.
W: That’s a shame. I like hockey better than those for sure, but you have different weather in America, which means you like different sports.
M: That’s true. I wonder why soccer is popular in both warm and cold places. I just know that soccer is more popular in Russia, because it’s so cold that people need to do more exercise to get warmer.

W: Well, if we leave now, we can still make it to the cinema. I am eager to see the film.

M: Mom, I’m going to work at a bank in downtown Chicago. I’ll move there from New York in two months.
W: I thought you liked your old job. Why did you get a new job
M: I liked my co-workers, but working in a hospital was very stressful. I had to work long hours and I’m scared of blood! Plus, I had to drive almost an hour to get there every morning.
W: Will you make more money working at the bank
M: No, I will make a little less. But if I work hard, I will get a better position later.
W: I thought you were going to look for a new job in San Francisco, where our family live. We miss you, and you never have enough time to visit us. Why can’t you work at a bank in San Francisco
M: I’m going to work at this bank for a year. Then I will try to change to a branch in San Francisco near you and Dad! I really want to move back to San Francisco, but I can’t leave right away. Working at this bank will give me some good experience.
Text 10
M: Good evening, everyone. It’s a pleasure for me, the head teacher of Maple Leaf International High School, to speak to you tonight. First of all, I would like to say congratulations to all of you — our senior class. I hope that if I meet you in five or ten years from now, I’ll be able to say it again. Because I believe each of you is an intelligent young person who can go out into the world and do something great. And the world needs you now more than ever! Go to medical school and become a doctor. There are more diseases now than there were twenty years ago! Start a language-learning company and build bridges between cultures! Study classical music and bring happiness to those who hear you play! Fight cancer! Help people earn more money! Develop new technologies! Make a name for yourself! But most importantly, help other people live better. Be a person who gives back to society. This is my dream for this graduating class. I hope you will make it yours!
