Think and share
For the three artists, their inspiration all comes from their lives and experiences.
1. What does the three artists’ inspiration have in common
Post-reading
2. Why do you think the author chose to use quotes instead
of reported speech in the passage
“During the walk and my stay here in the town, I saw
the fish being fed by people. …”
“There is no territory in the world of music.”
“I feel very grateful for the years in Xishuangbanna, …”
The author chose to use quotes in the passage to tell readers how the three artists get their inspiration for their artworks, and by adding these quotes, the passage appears more believable and more convincing.
to report: to tell somebody what you have heard or seen.
If we write a sentence with the reported speech, we usually talk about what another person said in our own words. We need to use a reported clause. We also need to make changes to the pronouns, time, place and even the tense. When stating a truth, we do not need to change the tense.
