2025届高考英语七选五阅读精讲精练70篇
01 2024年普通高等学校招生全国统一考试(新高考I卷)
Not all great writers are great spellers. If you want to be published, it’s vital to submit a perfect, professionally presented manuscript (原稿). 36 No editor is likely to tolerate a writer who does not take the trouble to spell words correctly.
I keep two reference books close-by on my desk: dictionary and thesaurus (同义词词典). I don’t trust my laptop’s spellchecker. 37 Of course, these days there are plenty of online dictionaries and thesauruses, but I’m old-fashioned enough to prefer a hard cover and pages I can leaf through with my fingers. I use the Concise Oxford Dictionary and the Collins Thesaurus.
38 It should give you a precise definition of each word, thus differentiating it from other words whose meanings are similar, but not identical. It will also usually show how the word is pronounced.
In addition, I have an old two-volume copy of the Shorter Oxford Dictionary, picked up a few years ago in a bookshop sale for just 99 pence. Of course, with its 2,672 pages, it’s not exactly short. It contains around 163,000 words, plus word combinations and idiomatic phrases. 39 However, if I need to check the origin of a word or to look up examples of its usage, there’s nothing better.
For well over a hundred years the most influential English dictionary was Samuel Johnson’s Dictionary of the English Language published in 1755. “To make dictionaries is dull (乏味) work,” wrote Johnson, illustrating one definition of “dull”. 40 A few minutes spent casting your eye over a page or two can be a rewarding experience.
A. I don’t often use this dictionary.
B. It takes no account of the context.
C. But I still don’t want to replace them.
D. But a dictionary can be a pleasure to read.
E. Of course, a dictionary is not only for spelling.
F. That means good grammar and no spelling mistakes.
G. Dictionaries don’t always give you enough information.

Overtourism Is For Real: How Can You Help
Travel promotes understanding, expands our minds, makes us better people, and boosts local economies and communities, but the rapid growth of travel has led to overtourism in certain regions and destinations. 36 Certainly not. The loss of what travel offers would be unacceptable in today's world. Here are some tips on making wise decisions to minimize pressure on the places we visit and improve our experience.
●Choose mindfully. Overvisited destinations are that way for a reason: they're special. With so many online posts featuring the same places, it's easy to feel like you're missing out. Go somewhere only when the landscape, culture or food deeply draws you. 37
●Get creative. The best way to ease pressure on over-touristed destinations is to go somewhere else. Though overtourism is described as a problem affecting the entire world, it's actually concentrated to a small number of extremely popular spots. That means you have tons of less-visited options to choose from. 38 Why not try a regional alternative or check out a popular destination's lesser-known sights
● 39 Minimize impact and maximize experience by skipping major holidays or rush hour. You'll compete with fewer tourists, save money, experience a different side of a popular place, and boost the economy when tourism is traditionally slower.
Visiting a place that others call home is a privilege(荣幸). Do your part to preserve what makes a destination special in the first place. 40 You may be amazed how much closer you'll feel to the people there.
A. Visit during off-peak times.
B. So, should we stop traveling
C. Travel for you and no one else.
D. Can overtourism be avoided then
E. You can still find relatively undiscovered places.
F. You'll find yourself virtually alone, or close to it.
G. Consider giving back to the communities you're visiting.

What is moderation(适度) Basically, it means eating only as much food as your body needs. You should feel satisfied at the end of a meal, but not too full. 36 But it doesn't mean saying goodbye to the foods you love.
Take your time. It's important to slow down and think about food as something nutritious rather than just something to eat in between meetings. 37 It actually takes a few minutes for your brain to tell your body that it has had enough food, so eat slowly and stop eating before you feel full.
Eat with others whenever possible. Eating alone, specially in front of the TV or computer, often leads to mindless overeating. And be careful about the foods you keep at hand. It's more challenging to eat in moderation if you have unhealthy snacks at the ready, like cookies. 38
Control emotional(情绪的) eating. 39 Many of us also turn to food to deal with unpleasant emotions such as sadness, loneliness, or boredom. But by learning healthier ways to manage emotions, you can regain control over the food you eat and your feelings.
40 A healthy breakfast can start your metabolism (新陈代谢),while eating small, healthy meals keeps your energy up all day. Avoid eating late at night. Try to eat dinner earlier and fast for 14 -16 hours until breakfast the next morning. Studies suggest that eating only when you're most active and giving your digestive system a long break each day may help to regulate weight.
A. Eat properly throughout the day.
B. We don't always eat just to satisfy hunger.
C. Don't swallow a meal on the way to work.
D. Most of us need to double the amount we eat.
E. Instead, surround yourself with healthy choices.
F. For many of us, moderation means eating less than we do now.
G. That won't lead to cheating or giving up on your new eating plan.

When did we start walking for leisure
“Going for a walk” is a popular pastime among older and younger generations alike because of its well-known benefits for our physical and mental health. But you may be surprised to hear that wandering through pretty streets or hiking in mountainous have not always been considered leisure activities, according to Daniel Gale, a researcher of pedestrianism(步行运动).
36 Before that, it was just something people did out of necessity, some of whom even associated it with criminal activity. But for Charles Dickens, the famous English 19th Century author, marching through London streets and tramping around the countryside was a big part of the creative process. 37 He walked at an impressive pace of four miles per hour, according to his biography by Peter Ackroyd.
38 Perhaps you can take inspiration from another big-thinking wanderer. 19th Century American writer Henry David Thoreau took a slower approach, preferring to stroll over hills and fields and through the woods. He said that he could not preserve his health and spirits without walking at least four hours a day.
This idea of taking a stroll to clear your head has survived through to the 21st Century. But have pedestrian manners remained the same A 1780 article for the London Magazine advised pedestrians to avoid things such as hanging around in conversation and obstructing people behind you. 39
In this modern age, when many of us are tied to our desks and to our screens, try the simple act of stepping out onto the city pavements, or getting lost in nature. 40 Whether you see yourself more as a casual stroller or a purposeful strider(阔步者), why not build a habit out of it
A. What if speed-walking isn’t your thing
B. This may make all the difference to our wellbeing.
C. Nowadays, we could add distracted phone-users.
D. He brought the recreation of walking into fashion.
E. Going on an urban walk is much more pleasant now.
F. It was a time to absorb what was going on around him.
G. In Britain, walking for fun wasn’t really a thing until the 1780s.

What Does Our Body Language Reveal
36 People tend to judge us far more on our physical appearance, including our mannerisms, than by what comes out of our mouths. To give the right impression, it’s important to understand what we are conveying non-verbally and how our unconscious signals are being received by the people we interact with.
Smiling is a powerful tool in your body language collection. Perhaps you smile a lot in the hope of appearing friendly. 37 In some Asian cultures, smiling too much is seen as a signal that you’re not a serious person and may lose you some respect.
If you’re trying to hide nervousness you’d better avoid smiling too much, too. Also be aware that nervous people often hug themselves, rub their forehead, and shift their body weight from one foot to another to create a slight rocking motion. 38
If you’re trying to show that you are listening sympathetically to what someone has to say, try tipping your head slightly and nodding very slightly. This gesture implies you are listening with interest. If you’re talking to someone and a third person joins, turn your body towards them slightly to include them and make them feel valued. 39 A single nod of the head is also a strong gesture of coolness when listening to another person.
To build trust quickly Try mirroring. Adopting a similar stance (站姿) to the person you are engaged with indicates your interest and helps develop trust. Use this with caution, though. 40 Mirroring only works when they don’t realize what you’re doing.
A. Don’t obviously copy your companion.
B. Our body language speaks volumes about us.
C. Control these habits to appear more composed.
D. Our body language barely overshadows our verbal communication.
E. Just be aware that it might make you seem less professional at work.
F. We tend to position our body and feet toward the person of interest to us.
G. By contrast, a failure to angle your body towards them implies “Unwelcome”.

Yoga has been around for roughly 5,000 years but it is more popular today than ever. An estimated 300 million people play yoga worldwide. Experts say its accessibility and the fact that you can practice it anywhere are big reasons why. 16
Yoga can improve your posture and balance, strengthen bones and muscles and keep your back and joints healthy. 17 Downward-facing dog can help relieve back pain while plank (平板) pose is good for building a strong core and upper body. Typically the final position of a yoga class is ideally done for at least five minutes. 18 After that, you and your classmates usually acknowledge each other with a greeting: Namaste.
Many people adopt yoga as a form of exercise. 19 As recorded in the Yoga Sutras, a classic yoga text, the philosophy of yoga is based on the idea that the mind, body and spirit are one. The practice of yoga consists of not only physical postures but also moral guidelines, breathing techniques, and self-awareness, helping reduce anxiety and improve focus. It is an approach to health and well-being that aims to bring balance and harmony to all aspects of life.
20 However, a 13-year U. S. study found that between 2001 and 2014, almost30,000 individuals went to the emergency room with a yoga-related injury. Overstretching tends to be the most common issue, but serious injuries—although rare—can happen even to advanced coaches.
A. Different poses offer different benefits.
B. The detailed advantages are as follows.
C. Actually, yoga is a way of life at its roots.
D. This exercise is said to strengthen your body.
E. Yoga seems unlikely to send you to the hospital.
F.A lot of studies have been carried out about yoga.
G. The aim of this pose is to settle your mind and body.

Loneliness is a bigger health threat than smoking 15 cigarettes a day, according to new research. Our ancestors likely did not suffer from a lack of companions. Why has loneliness become such a threat How might it be addressed
In the distant past, there were few complaints about loneliness. Indeed, every person in a community including children was up to speed on every detail of the lives of everyone else. Instead of suffering from loneliness, our distant ancestors were oppressed (被压迫) by a lack of privacy. 36 They facilitate distance. How did loneliness take over contemporary life
Typically, people move away from family and friends for work opportunities. Yet, cities often function as gatherings of relative strangers rather than functional communities. The many people wandering around in a city are irrelevant if we have no social connection with them. Migrants to cities may establish various meaningful social links. 37 These might be the people we work among, those who frequent a coffee shop, or members of a gym or sports club. Such associations are not made automatically. 38 In some cases, those who eagerly need social connection can fare poorly in cities.
39 According to the U. S. Surgeon General’s Report on Loneliness, people who spend more time online are lonelier. People who claim thousands of online “friends” are often chronically anxious, disconnected and depressed. Perhaps, they would gain better social bonus by being kind to people in real life.
Virtually, not everyone needs constant companionship. This is not merely a question of how extroverted a person is. 40 People with a strong sense of external purpose barely suffer from loneliness, whether they perfect their dance moves, get involved in political activism or train service dogs. In this vein, anyone who cultivates a love of nature may become a part of the natural world. That is an endless source of peace, happiness, and connection.
A. Their habits contributed to loneliness.
B. They require openness, initiative and effort.
C. Rather, it reflects how someone leads their life.
D. Outgoing people will live a busy life with social media.
E. Today, social media bring back the invasions of privacy.
F. Many turn to social media for companionship with mixed results.
G. However, associations are often formed through accidental networks.

Things To Remember On Your First Solo Travel Adventure
If you've ever thought about just taking a trip yourself instead of waiting for someone to join you're not alone. 36 However, do you count yourself among the many who have tried it If you planning your own solo trip, here are four important things to keep in mind.
37 Since you're traveling solo, how you choose to explore it is entirely up to you. This is your chance to do whatever you want whenever you want because this time, you're running the show.
Don't be afraid to talk to random people. Though there is someone who poses a threat, it's important to remember that not everyone is out to get you. 38 That's because you're a novelty, a person from another country who is visiting theirs. Therefore, instead of putting on your headphones or instantly seeing them as weirdos use this spontaneous chat as a chance to meet the locals or get recommendations for things to do during your trip.
It's okay to have bad days. 39 It happens and it's completely okay to take some time to process whatever it is you're feeling. Take yourself to a movie or spend the day doing something relaxing like writing in your journal or reading on the beach.
It's okay to start small. 40 Start by doing a staycation in another part of town, spending a few days in a new locale a bus or train ride away. Just do whatever you're comfortable with and see how it all feels for you.
A. You are the boss of your own adventure.
B. You need to make an unusual travel choice.
C. It's no secret that solo travel is on the rise.
D. Sometimes things can go incredibly wrong.
E. People like you simply don't know how to start.
F. Most of the time people are just curious and try to be friendly.
G. Remember, your first solo trip doesn't have to be to a whole other continent.

Why is a compliment (赞美) so impactful One of the most important things to humans is to feel valued and respected by others, says Vanessa Bohns, a social psychologist, who has researched compliments. According to her research, people feel “significantly better” after both giving and receiving a compliment. 36
“You handled that situation so well.”
Bohns recently used her favorite compliment when she saw a server address a difficult situation with a customer at the bar. “I like it so much because you use it in anxious moments where the other person is often unsure of whether they handled a situation OK,” she says. In situations that call for a compliment, don’t second-guess yourself. Give your compliments generously. 37 That concern is unfounded.
“ 38 ”
This compliment—one of Bohns’ favorites—works well among romantic partners and close family members. “It’s a beautiful way to highlight how their presence turns life into something meaningful, despite boring routines of our everyday lives,” she says. If you’re afraid that giving a compliment like this will feel strange, you’re not alone. 39 If it makes you personally feel like the bar is lowered for you to give a compliment if you write it down, or if you practice saying it out loud or giving your pet cat the compliment first, do that.
“Hey, great dress!”
Feel free to compliment strangers. In Bohns’ research, students on a college campus were told to approach a stranger of the same gender and compliment them—about, for example, their nice shirt. Before heading out, the study participants tended to underestimate their positive effect while overestimating how annoying it would be. Across all contexts, strangers are more likely to be pleased than confused. Plus, who knows 40
A. I love the way you bring out the best in people.
B. Respect is essential when you deliver compliments.
C. You make even ordinary moments feel extraordinary.
D. One way to overcome this fear is to do a practice run.
E. You might make a new friend in addition to making someone’s day.
F. With that in mind, we asked her to share some of her favorite compliments.
G. People sometimes worry that they’re going over and will start to sound insincere.

Is a moviegoer different than a movie-lover I’d say so. You can love a movie by watching it at home. 36 . I’ve spent a lot of time talking to people about movies. By listening to what they say, I can report they only share one thing in common: they go out.
I've thought about two views of the moviegoer lately.
The first view comes from Roland Barthes. Most often, his moviegoers don't go to the movies for a distinct purpose. 37 . They are bored. Once they get inside, they can't help but sink into a relaxed state. When they leave the movie theater, these moviegoers don't want to talk to anyone about the movie. 38 . Barthes sees them as a lonely being, one who is introspective (自省的). I think some of us use movie theaters to retreat inside ourselves.
The second view comes from the Clark Theater manager, Bruce Trinz. When people go to the movies they go for a certain personal motive. They may want to forget something, or escape from the lives they are leading. Or they may want to see a film they liked years ago. 39 , they are the hopeless addicts who, quite simply, like movies. The only thing I would challenge in this definition is the word hopeless. 40 , but they come to the movies filled with hope. They may not be able to define what they hope to experience, but they will know it when they feel it.
A. Whatever motive they have
B. To be a moviegoer, you have to go out
C. The movie also puts them somewhere else
D. They are instead wrapped up in themselves
E. Because moviegoers go in search of beauty
F. Moviegoers may be hopelessly addicted to the movies
G. It's something to do with a response to leisure, free time

Gamba has a lifelong fear of dentists. “It was much easier to accept the toothache,” he says.
36 , there are times when you have to seek proper dental care. Fortunately, many dentists are specially trained in handling fearful patients. A variety of methods are also available to reduce pain and fear when you are in the dentist's chair.
The best dentists use simple methods to create a feeling of control. They gently explain what the patient will feel, and for about how long. They frequently ask the patient for permission to continue. 37 . Their working places are barely recognizable as a dentist's office. Free of posters showing the horrors of dental diseases, some even have a fireplace in the waiting room and some have a treatment room overlooking a waterfall. 38 , your body may still fear that chair. Here are some tips that may help you:
Go to the dentist with someone you trust, such as a close relative who has no fear of dentists. If possible, ask him/her to sit with you during the treatment.
39 . Listen to your own music on headphones— a new CD, not one you've heard a lot, so you’ll be a little more interested in it. Or find a dental clinic with a TV in the treatment room.
Try relaxation techniques. Controlled breathing—I taking a big breath, holding it, and letting it out slowly—will slow your heartbeat and relax your muscles.
As the pain from Gamba’s wisdom teeth worsened, he found support online through a forum for people with dental fear. He also found a dentist, who advertises his skill with fearful patients. “ 40 ,” Gamba says before going. But the dentist put him so at ease that he agreed to receive treatment right away. And it was painless, he says.
A. Add your favorite songs to the playlist
B. Shift attention while in the dentist’s chair
C. It wouldn’t be possible without the dentists' support
D.I convinced myself that I was just going to talk with the dentist
E. Even if your mind tells you you’ll be just fine in such circumstances
F. Although you would never look forward to a spell in the dentist’s chair
G. Some dentists even go out of their way to create a nonthreatening environment

Overcoming barriers to exercising
If you’re having trouble beginning an exercise plan or following through, you’re not alone. Detailed exercise instructions and workout plans are just a click away. But knowing how and why to exercise was far from enough. Making exercise a habit takes more. 36
While practical concerns like a busy schedule or poor health can make exercise more challenging, for most of us, the biggest barriers are mental. Maybe it’s a lack of self-confidence that keeps you from taking positive steps. 37 We’ve all been there at some point. There are steps you can take to make exercise more fun and active.
You don’t have to spend hours in a gym or force yourself into dull or painful activities to experience the physical and mental benefits of exercise. 38 In fact, adding just modest amounts of physical activity to your weekly routine can have a profound effect on your mental and emotional health.
Research shows that self-sympathy increases the likelihood that you’ll succeed in any attempt. So, don’t blame yourself too much for your current fitness level. 39 Instead, look at your past mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow.
40 Try not to be discouraged by what you can’t accomplish or how far you have to go to reach your fitness goals. Instead, focus on consistency. While the improvements in mood and energy levels may happen quickly, the physical payoff will come in time.
A. Maybe your passion dies down.
B. A little exercise is better than nothing.
C. Expecting too much only leads to frustration.
D. You know there are great reasons to exercise.
E. All that will do is cause you to lose motivation.
F. You need the right mindset and a smart approach.
G. Many of us are struggling to get into the motionless state.

Helena Blumen, a cognitive (认知的) scientist, says the complicated mental multi-tasking that dancing requires engages various parts of the brain at the same time, leading to the strengthening of neural (神经系统的) connections across different regions. 36 . “It’s socially, cognitively and physically demanding,” she says.
Anyone who’s ever felt the irresistible urge to dance to a favorite song knows that combining music and movement can lift your mood and melt away stress. But there’s a lot more happening in your brain when you’re trying to follow even the easiest choreography (编舞). 37 . Tasks like getting around the kitchen or walking to the bus stop can become more attainable if regarded as choreography.
To learn how the mechanisms of dancing work in the brain, researchers conducted MRI scans on older adults who engaged in either dance or a traditional exercise program over six months. 38 , the dancers grew more white and gray matter in the parts of the brain responsible for cognitive processes.
The researchers assume that these brain changes contribute to more neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to form new connections and pathways. 39 . Brain plasticity is similar to the city’s ability to build new roads, repair old ones or even change the direction of traffic based on how often the routes are used and what the city needs.
40 . A Finnish study of people with severe brain injuries showed that dance-based recovery might improve mobility, cognition and overall well-being. Additionally, research shows that dancing can reduce the risk of brain-related diseases such as dementia (痴呆).
A. Moreover, dancing can help prevent brain injuries
B. In addition to the physical and neurological benefits
C. The effect extends beyond dancing to the real world
D. While both groups improved their level of physical fitness
E. Dancing might even help people with brain injuries and diseases
F. Imagine your brain is like a city with loads of roads and pathways

If you are trying to assess a person’s character, make sure you do not rely heavily on factors that can be misleading. Instead, observe the individual’s ability to tell the truth and to commit. 36
You can tell a lot about a person’s character by observing how he treats other people. 37 It may be difficult to actually see how he treats different types of people if you only encounter him in a single environment, such as the workplace. It is often possible, however, to get some idea of his manner of interaction with different types of people through conversation with him.
Whether or not a person is honest says a lot about his character. The attitude a person has about honesty can also indicate what type of person he is. 38 To some degree the types of lies he may tell and his motives for doing so matter.
39 The word “commitment” often causes people to instantly think of close relationships. Whether a person can respect the vows (誓约) and agreements is usually an indication of character.
A person’s character is affected by his attitude. 40 Attitude can affect many aspects of a person’s life, including how hard he works and his ability to be supportive of others.
When you are trying to assess someone’s character, remember that it consists of qualities and habits that form his identity.

It was dinner time, yet I hadn't finished my work for the day. Cheery people who were enjoying their holiday time buzzed around me. But with my head down and headphones in, I had interacted with very few of them. The day passed more like a fast-forwarded video than something that I actually fully experienced. 16
This was my first week living the digital nomad lifestyle. I had left my corporate role and found freelance(自由职业的)writing work online to afford me the freedom to travel. 17 With enthusiasm, I expected my attitude would also change. Instead, the first surprising realization of my travel journey had hit: despite changing my formal suits to casuals, I was the exact same person I had been at home.
I had prepared excitedly, surfing online about digital nomadism. 18 While you might expect finances to be the biggest killer of this lifestyle, unrealistic expectations are the death blow that I hear about most often. After six years abroad, realism is now the primary message I share.
19 Instead of an office room, you'll work from a balcony overlooking the Mediterranean or a sunny rooftop in the heart of Marrakesh. Instead of waiting at the coffee machine next to complaining colleagues, your daily coffee run will lead you down dusty cobblestone streets into tiny cafes. These dreams exist and are waiting for you once you clear customs.
But that's not all that's waiting for new digital nomads. 20 At-home life and life on the road can at times feel shockingly similar, or, if bad work habits take over, even worse. It's an important expectation to understand before you set out on your digital nomad lifestyle: your surroundings will change, but you take you everywhere that you go. No matter how ultra-light you pack.
A. And my surroundings looked different.
B. But this wasn't at a tiring nine-to-five office job.
C. This was a typical day back in my office I managed to escape.
D. New surroundings may also make you fully engaged in your work.
E. Should you choose to become a digital nomad, your environment will change.
F. You'll still wake up with emails in your inbox and to-dos begging to be handled.
G. Yet, somehow I unknowingly over-consumed expectation and under-consumed realism.

How to charge an electric vehicle (EV) is one of the biggest concerns people have when working out whether going electric is right for them. It is true that sometimes gaining access to reliable charging can seem a bit tricky. 36
First, download an app with a comprehensive map of the public charging points showing their locations, how powerful they are, and whether they're working. All this is vital information because, even if you have public charging points nearby, you will need alternatives in case they are in use. 37
A growing number of property owners are renting out their charging points and driveways to other local EV drivers when they're not using them. 38 . Thus, your car gets charged, the owners make money, and emissions are reduced.
39 .For example, when your car is running out of juice, you'd just pull up to a battery-change station from your car brand and sit in the car while a fully charged unit is changed in. The Chinese EV brand Nio does this, but isn't available in the UK as yet.
For now, if charging access remains difficult for you, it's still possible to go electric----in part. 40 . Many hybrid(混合的) cars are now good for 50 miles of electric running before you need to use the engine. So, if most of your driving is local, you might only need to find a charger once or twice a week, while you have the backup of a fuel engine for long journeys.
A. But it may be easier than you think
B. It actually worked out much cheaper
C. There are also other innovative ways to get your EV going
D. A plug-in EV combines a petrol engine with a smaller battery
E. A “fast” charger usually takes eight hours to fully charge an EV
F. So you need to get a good feel for where your nearest points are
G. You can find a map of homeowners whose charging points are available

As a high school student, you’re likely used to learning through reading textbooks. 36 This lies at the heart of “experiential appreciation,” a philosophy that encourages you to engage directly with the world around you. It’s about learning from real-life experiences, and discovering a more profound and engaging way to learn.
To practice experiential appreciation, you can start by getting involved in hands-on activities related to your subjects. They will provide a firsthand understanding of the concepts you’re studying, making learning active and meaningful. So, try joining a sports team, picking up a paintbrush, or taking part in a local charity event. 37
As you dive deeper, immerse (沉浸) yourself fully in the surroundings and activities. When you’re in nature, don’t just look around. 38 Touching the leaves, feeling the wind and listening to the birds can enrich your learning and make each moment more memorable.
39 After trying something new, ask yourself what you learned and how it made you feel. Write in a journal or discuss it with friends. This self-discovery turns experiences into life lessons and offers a deeper understanding of the world.
Experiential appreciation transforms learning from a task to be completed into a journey to be treasured. 40 So, explore the world around you, let every experience shape you, and discover the endless possibilities that await. This is the core of true learning, where every moment is a step towards a richer, more enlightened life.

People have always believed that nature is good for health and happiness. According to scientific studies, being in nature makes people less stressed. In a recent experiment in Japan, one group of people were asked to walk through a forest while another group had to walk through a busy city. 36 . However, researchers found that after the walks, the people who had walked in the forest had better moods, less anxiety and even lower blood pressure. So the experiment showed that it was being in nature that helped people feel less stressed, not just the walk.
Gregory Bratman from Stanford University in the United States found in experiments that a walk in nature could have important cognitive(认知) benefits, improving a person’s memory and creativity. 37 Teachers find that when children are enjoying the natural world, their awareness and creativity are improved, along with their reasoning and observational skills.
Why does being in nature bring so many benefits for us 38 , so we have an instinctive(本能的) love for it. Even just looking out of the window at a beautiful tree can help us feel less stressed.
Scientists also think that being in nature helps our brain recover from a lot of activities that we usually do during the day such as working on math problems or using our cell phone. 39 — putting all our attention into one thing, which can make us feel tired. But when we are outside, we use undirected attention. We see an interesting cloud or a beautiful flower, and our attention moves quickly and easily from one thing to another. So being in nature gives our brains the chance to rest.
40 . For many of us, nature is something we can enjoy just by walking out of our door. So enjoy the nature around you!
A. The walks were equally long and hard
B. Regular workouts are surprisingly helpful
C. One idea is that human beings come from nature

Hop on the Silent Walking Trend
Silent walking involves walking outdoors without distractions like music or conversations, focusing on the mind-body-nature connection. 36 That’s a slower, lower-impact way to relax and is great for fitness. Here’s everything you need to know about the trend.
Select a natural setting and fully engage your senses. For reaping the mental health benefits, it is recommended to find a quiet and peaceful natural location. 37 Meanwhile, consciously observing the sights, sounds, smells, and physical sensations during the walk can significantly impact cognitive and emotional well-being.
To stimulate the mind, consider exploring different routes than usual. Without your favourite podcast or playlist, you might slip into boredom on your walk. 38 And it might even be good for your brain. Scientists applaud the virtues of boredom for brain health, believing that it boosts creativity and improves social connections. And if you do get bored, rest assured that it shows you’ve disconnected from external distractions. Go with it, and make sure you take a different route each time—it’ll keep you motivated.
Start off with five-minute silent walks and eventually build up to thirty minutes. If you’re usually a headphone wearer, it will feel super weird to walk without your go-to tunes, but give yourself a second to adjust. Chances are, once you’re a few minutes into your silent walk, you’ll feel the magic kick in. 39
Regular reflection and ongoing documentation are essential. Dear Fresher, joining a university can be a pleasant but challenging experience: horrific and yet beautiful, scary but exciting. 36
Do not panic if, like me, you do not make friends on the first day or week. Before I met Sanaa, I had tried to force myself to make friends with classmates in my other majors. Then I was starting to get convinced that there was something wrong with me. 37 Eventually, when I started making more friends, it made sense why the friendships l had forced did not work out. It was my first lesson in understanding my uniqueness, and reminding me that my "friends" are somewhere, out there. 38
So, dear Fresher, as I say welcome to university life, I am also saying, give yourself time — to understand your school, your course, and your new rhythm of life. Do not fall into the trap of people-pleasing to fit in.
39 Of course, you must leave room to grow and breathe — to discover amazing cultures, new accents, and new ways of matching your clothes —but do not do anything that needs you to abandon your genuine self in order to become.
Finally, it might not look like it, but the four, five, or six years you will be in university will pass by really quickly. 40 Perhaps that is DIYs, writing blog posts, participating in club activities in your department, or joining the dance troupe.
So, dear Fresher, go forward, and leave your mark! You will be surprised at how much experience that will contribute to your CV.
A. It is a big turn on the pages of your life.
B. Extracurricular activities build confidence.
C. I no longer struggle too hard to fit square pegs into round holes.
D. It is a good idea for you to make friends with like-minded people.
E. That was why I got uninspired by every friendship I tried to make.
F. While the new phase of life is challenging, remember who you truly are.
G. Seek out opportunities to do stuff you are passionate about during your free time.

In early October, Travis Gienger transported an enormous pumpkin(南瓜) from his home in Minnesota to the World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off in California. His pumpkin set the record for the biggest one ever grown in North America. How do competitive growers get their pumpkins to grow to massive sizes 36
Gienger, who teaches horticulture(园艺学) at Anoka Technical College, begins growing his pumpkins in mid-April, starting with seeds that he grows indoors for the first few weeks, when Minnesota’s soil is too frosty. 37 They can absorb sunlight, nutrients from the soil, and water there. “At their peak, you ‘re watering them with at least 600 liters a day,” he says.
Depending on the variety, pumpkin plants can grow up to a dozen fruits on a single vine(藤曼). But to maximize size, growers remove all but one or two of these pumpkins in order to decrease each individual fruit’s competition for resources. 38
But what exactly happens inside a pumpkin as it grows Two factors drive natural growth: cell division and cell expansion. Cell division accounts for most of the growth at the beginning of a fruit’s life. This period lasts for about 20 days in pumpkin plants. 39 Pumpkin cells will expand until around 50 or 60 days after pollination (授粉).
40 Some varieties of pumpkins have been bred specifically to maximize their size. Still, there is genetic variation even among pumpkins of the same variety. This has led to competition for the best seeds. Following each harvest, many growers auction off(拍卖掉) the seeds from their biggest pumpkins, which will then be used for the following year’s plantings.
A. Biology has the answers.
B. Genetics also influences pumpkin growth.
C. The following tips will give you a head start.
D. Once it warms up, the plants are transferred outside。
E. When it stops, cell expansion will then come into play.
F. Growers extend the growth period for as long as possible.
G. Growers also remove the weeds in the area for the same reason.

Lying awake for hours before falling asleep is a common problem. Even if you can finally fall asleep, taking too long to fall asleep can lead to too few hours of sleep altogether. 36 So people having trouble falling asleep always wonder how they can sleep well.
Parents know from experience that gentle music can help babies fall asleep. Science supports this, showing that children of all ages, from babies to elementary school children, sleep better after listening to comfortable music. Fortunately, children aren't the only ones who can benefit from gentle music before bedtime. 37

Many people can't fall asleep quickly because stressful and worrying thoughts keep them awake at night. By listening to music, the mind has something else to focus on. With time, the practice of listening to music at bedtime becomes more effective as the brain positively associates music with sleep.
39 Studies have looked at many types of music and playlists but there isn't a clear answer about the best music for sleep. What we do know is that researchers have typically used either a self-made playlist or one that has been designed especially with sleep in mind. One of the most important things about how music affects a person's body is their own musical preferences. 40 For those who don't want to design their own playlist, online music services have stepped in and usually offer playlists for sleep or relaxation.

One of my bad habits is saying “busy” when people ask me how I'm doing. Sometimes it's because I actually am busy, but other times it's because that's what I think I'm supposed to say. That's what important or promoted people say. 36 So why are we so proud to talk about how busy we are all the time
In 2016, researchers conducted a study to figure it out. 37 And interestingly, these status attributions(归属) are heavily influenced by our own beliefs. In other words, the more we believe that one has the opportunity for success based on hard work, the more we tend to think that people who always skip leisure and work are of higher standing.
That's why we feel like we have to appear busy, and there's a real perception that if someone is knee-deep in meetings, emails, and stress, then they're probably a big deal. 38 According to a recent study, one in five highly engaged employees is at risk of burnout.
39 It sounds self-righteous (自以为是) and sets the wrong tone. Phrases like “I have limited access to email” and “I'll respond as soon as I get back” sound like you're being held against your will from working as opposed to making the most of your time off.
