Born in Russia and living in an orphanage(孤儿院) for the first 13 months of her life, Jessica Long had no idea what her future would hold. The little girl born with Fibular Hemimelia would not only go on to be a 13-time gold medal-winning Paralympic champion, but she would inspire others to chase their dreams.
Long was born in Russia, where she lived in an orphanage until her parents adopted her in 1993. Soon after being adopted, she had to have her legs amputated(截肢) at only a year and a half. "It gave me a lot of freedom and movement," Long said. "But growing up was definitely really hard. From a very early age, I just decided that I was going to be unstoppable and I wasn't going to let my legs hold me back." From that point forward, she didn't let anyone tell her what she was or wasn't capable of doing. She started doing gymnastics as a kid. Then, in 2002, Long found her sport for life: swimming!
"I was the only girl with no legs on the swim team," she said. "There were moments I struggled, but my teammates treated me like a friend. When I look back on my life and I think about anyone on that team, no one made fun of me for having no legs and they were so kind." Long defied(顶住) all odds and surprised everyone when she qualified at age only 12 for the Paralympics in 2004 in Athens. After four Paralympics, Long has won 13 gold, six silver, and four bronze medals. She has dozens of World Championship medals and has broken numerous world records throughout her career so far. But she didn't concentrate on winning awards or being famous. "I really just love swimming. It's important for any athlete to remember just why you started," she said.
As one of the most decorated athletes in history, Long's goal is to just keep competing as long as her body allows. "Dream big," she said. "There are so many possibilities out there, so find your passion, be consistent and work hard. You define your own success."

Humans have long been trying to make sense of our place in the universe. Waiting at a launch site in French Guiana NASA's James Webb Space Telescope is the latest step forward in that ancient quest(探索).
Using telescopes, astronomers have seen many galaxies(星系) such as the Andromeda Galaxy and the NGC 3227 Galaxy. So far, the most distant galaxy ever discovered, GN-z11, was spotted by the Hubble Space Telescope. To the untrained eye, it looks like a red blob(小点点), but it's basically like looking back in time about 13.4 billion years ago. That's just about 0.4 billion years after the Big Bang.
"Hubble is limited in how far back in time it can look, so finding this one was just a lucky break," says Marusa Bradac, an astronomer at the University of California. "Astronomers only spotted it because decades of using Hubble have let them cover much of the sky, and this particular early galaxy is surprisingly bright although it is 25 times smaller than the Milky Way Galaxy and has just one percent of its mass."
Already, with that one galaxy, we've started to question some of our assumptions about how galaxies grow. The powerful, $ 10 billion James Webb Space Telescope has technology that should let it see back to 0.1 ~0.2 billion years after the Big Bang, the period when the very first galaxies possibly formed.
"If all go well, the James Webb Space Telescope will help us to build up the story of how the first galaxies ever formed and how they grew into galaxies we see today and we live in today," says Bradac. "But the chances of seeing those first-born stars with the new telescope are small. There's maybe even more of a chance that we might see some of those stars explode. Such information can help us understand how galaxies formed and changed into the familiar shapes and structures seen today. That's what's amazing about the new telescope."
28.When did the Big Bang take place
A. Around 13.0 billion years ago. B. Around 13.4 billion years ago.
C. Around 13.6 billion years ago. D. Around 13.8 billion years ago.
29.What does the underlined words "this one" in paragraph 3 refer to
A. The Milky Way Galaxy. B. The GN-z11 Galaxy.
C. The Andromeda Galaxy. D. The NGC 3227 Galaxy.
30.What is the fourth paragraph mainly about
A. The great potential of the new telescope.
B. The need for new scientific breakthroughs.
C. The cost of the James Webb Space Telescope.
D. The importance of the Hubble Space Telescope.
31.What can the new telescope most likely help scientists do according to Bradac
A. Find the first-born star in the universe.
B. Witness the occurring of the Big Bang.
C. See the explosion of some of the first-born stars.
D. Get a complete understanding of the universe.
D
The 2023 Nobel Prize in economics has been awarded to economic historian Claudia Goldin at Harvard University, "for having advanced our understanding of women's labor market outcomes". Goldin's work has helped to explain why women have been under-represented in the labor market for at least the past two centuries, and why even today they continue to earn less than men on average by around 13%.
Goldin mined 200 years of data to analyze how changes in women's participation in the labor force have been influenced by social, political and technological change over the past two centuries. Before Goldin's studies, it was widely thought that the increase in the percentage of women in work over the course of the 20th century was a reflection of economic growth—higher growth meant more females could be employed. But by looking back carefully at historical records, Goldin showed that the percentage of married women involved in paid work was at least as high in the late 18th century as it is today. She also demonstrated that although work opportunities for women expanded in the 20th century, they were not made use of as much as they could have been.
Goldin has also shown that inequalities in pay have not followed a simple relationship with economic growth. The earning divide between different genders was smaller during the industrial revolution during 1820-1850; the divide changed little between 1930 and 1980.Goldin showed in 2010 that being a mother has a key role in keeping pay inequality, largely through loss of earnings when women quit work in favor of raising children.
"The strength of her work comes from combining reliable historical data with insights from economic theories of wage determination, employment, discrimination and political economy," says economist Claudia Olivetti at Dartmouth College. "I am delighted to see Goldin's work recognized. She has been such an inspiration to many women and young researchers. Leading with passion, curiosity and integrity, she taught us to be brave and go for the big questions. Thanks to Goldin's research, some companies are now starting to change their practices with the introduction of flexible, family-friendly working arrangements."
32. Which aspect of the economy does Claudia Goldin focus on in her work
A. The labor market. B. The political economy.
C. The employment inequality. D. The gender pay gap.
33. What did Goldin's analysis of the 200-year data say
A. More working women reflect economic growth.
B. Jobs have been the same in the past 2 centuries.
C. Economic growth doesn't bring more women into employment.
D. Female labor forces have changed greatly since the 18th century.
34. What is the major factor in the earning divide according to Goldin
A. Marriage. B. Parenthood.
C. Economic growth. D. Industrial revolution.
35. Why is Claudia Olivetti's comment referred to in the last paragraph
A. To show Goldin's influence.
B. To praise Goldin for her bravery.
C. To explain reasons for Goldin's success.
D. To prove Goldin's insights into economy.

When school was over, the day was fading and it started to drizzle(毛毛雨). I stood at the school gate, with a loaded backpack on my shoulders. It was Friday again: a weekend of joy with unlimited sleeping hours and dinner courses specially made to my taste, a weekend at home. I waved goodbye to my friends as they jumped into their fathers' warm and comfortable cars. Curiously, this gave rise to a disturbing feeling in me. It was not exactly what they called jealousy, but something like dismay(沮丧). I knew all I could expect was an old bike Mom would ride along on, with the badly-oiled chain creaking(嘎吱作响) against the wheel to announce her arrival.
Every Friday when Mom came to pick me up for the weekend, it was a moment full of great expectation and great unease. I always felt my face burning as we rode our way in and out of the numerous cars and saw my friends' faces sticking out of the car windows. It was like stepping into a ballroom with beautifully dressed ladies and finding yourself in a smelly T-shirt.
To tell you the truth, Mom is quite a headache once in a while. She just looks a homely middle-aged housewife. Being a practitioner of DIY, she knits most of my sweaters, chiefly in old styles. Whenever caught by some curious classmates asking what brand my sweaters are, I'd force a smile and reply in a half joking manner: homemade.
I couldn't remember when I started to find her such an embarrassment. As a little boy, I relied on her so much. She had been working at home, cooking in the kitchen, knitting by the lamp or riding across town to buy me a book I badly needed. It had always been much fun riding with mom. But just now there seemed to be something standing between us, something that made her so strange to me and me to her.

第二节
答案:
Paragraph 1:
Today she showed up in a raincoat. When I saw her, I felt full of great expectation but great unease. It seemed so unfair that my classmates sat in their parents' cars, but I just sat on an old badly-oiled chain creaking bike. Why I had to hide the rain from the ugly raincoat. I was full of complaint about all of these. I was sick of these. How I wished I could also have rich parents like my classmates. Thinking about these things, I was quite dissatisfied with my mother. I even didn't want her to pick me up. So I didn't say a word with her and sat on the bike silently.
Paragraph 2:
Mom tried to cover me with the back of the raincoat again as a storm set in. She also didn't say a word with me. She just wanted to make sure that I didn't get wet. She seemed to know What I felt. So She just wanted to comfort me and gave me the warmth and love She could give me. Thinking about these, my eyes was filled with tears. I didn't feel uneased, but was full of greatness for the best she tried to give me.
附:听力录音材料
Text 1
W: How did you get here so quickly You told me your car broke down.
M: Yeah, it did. I wanted to take a taxi, but my neighbor saw me walking and offered me a ride.
Text 2
W: I still haven't seen my luggage come out yet. It's in a hard guitar case. Do you think it was sent to the wrong airport
M: Go to the over-sized luggage counter. It won't come out here. After you get it, I will call a taxi.
Text 3
W: Did you hear about the bus accident on TV Four people died and five others were taken to hospital.
M: It was terrible. There were fifteen people in total on that bus.
Text 4
W: Wow, that was a great meal! I didn't know you were such a good cook.
M: I'm glad you liked it. I just wanted to say thank you for taking me sailing last weekend.
Text 5
M: That was so good! I'm so glad I read the book first, otherwise I wouldn't have understood most of the story.
W: I agree. The music was also really good, and the acting, too.
Text 6
W: Jason, don't you think the job offer from Morgan Stanley is special Why didn't you take it
M: I know it was going to be a great job, but my wife didn't want me to move to another city for work.
W: Why not
M: She's worried that trying to handle two small kids by herself would be too much for her in a new city.
W: Is there anyone else who could help her
M: Not really. We had a bad experience with a lady who helped with the cooking and cleaning. She just quit one day. She said she didn't like being around dogs, but she had never said anything before. Ever since then, my wife says she doesn't want to hire another person.
W: Well, it sounds like it was for the best. You know… if you ever need a babysitter, I'd be happy to do it.
Text 7
W: I don't see you at the gym anymore. Have you been busy lately
M: I'm always busy, but that's not the reason. I just found that it was easier to do it at home.
W: I understand. So what do you do instead
M: I purchased an exercise machine that allows me to do everything I need. It also came with an instructional video and a magazine I can subscribe to.
W: Do you still run
M: Of course. I have started to record how fast I run around the park. Every day, I try to improve by at least one second. It is a great way to push myself.
W: Do you work out more or less than before
M: I used to go to the gym twice a week. Now I run every day, and lift weights three times a week.
Text 8
W: Oh, no! You broke my favorite vase! What did you do
M: When I sat down on your sofa, it must have scared your cat. She jumped onto the table and knocked it over.
W: It's OK. Just help me clean everything up. Is there any way we can fix it My mom will be very upset. Her mother gave it to me before she died.
M: Well, it looks like there are only two big pieces that broke off. Maybe we can use some really strong glue to put it back together.
W: What if it doesn't look good Do you think I should just buy one like it
M: That is an antique. It might be hard to find in a regular store.
W: You're right. We would never find the exact one. Hold on. My friend gave me some super glue a while ago. I think I still have it… I do!
M: We can take it to an antique store. There are skilled workers who can repair it for you.
W: I don't have the time. My mother is coming over tonight.
M: Then let's try that super glue and see if it works.
Text 9
W: I've always wanted to have a special talent.
M: You mean like being really good at sports
W: Not really. I mean something that I could do in my spare time.
M: I know exactly what you mean. My cousin convinced me to learn the guitar. It's been a month now, and I can already play a few songs.
W: Good for you. I have a friend from Switzerland who can speak three languages. Isn't that amazing She makes me want to challenge myself more.
M: Learning a new language is always a good idea, but if you're not going to use it, then what's the point
W: I agree. That's why I've asked the art teacher at school about how to start oil painting.
M: It must be expensive. You need to buy all those colors to paint with.
W: That's what I thought, too, but you can mix most of the colors yourself. I only need to buy red, blue, yellow and white.
M: Good. So, when can I see your first work of art
W: Well, I should have my supplies by Friday. I'll show you a few the following week. You just have to promise me one thing.
M: What's that
W: Don't laugh.
Text 10
In 2014, Amazon released the world's first voice-controlled "smart assistant", called the Echo. It performed a variety of functions, including setting alarms, creating to-do lists, and providing real-time information such as weather, traffic and other news. Two years later, Google came out with the $180 Google Home. In 2017, the toy company Mattel came out with Aristotle, their idea of a personal assistant, aimed at kids. If you are in the market for one of these smart assistants, there are a number of things to consider. For instance, Google Home can answer a wide variety of questions and has a music library of 35 million songs. It also has many functions that work well with the TV, and is $50 cheaper than Amazon Echo. Echo can all be operated just by voice command. It has a music library of 2 million songs. Mattel's Aristotle can do most of what the other two can, but is meant to be more of a personal companion to children. It can be used as a baby camera in your child's early years, and still be useful until around middle school. It plays interactive games with them, reads to them, and serves as an instructional resource as the children grow up. In summary, all three have their benefits.
