I'm a grandma in my 60s. In the spring of 2020, like the rest of the world, I spent a lot of time staring at a screen and that was when I first got into the YouTube world. I discovered that onscreen offerings were truly endless. From one YouTuber I learned how to plant my own vegetable garden. Someone else shared poetry from Robert Frost, wise sayings from Confucius, and a smattering(一知半解) of other philosophical viewpoints, all of which helped me through some dark days. Down the rabbit hole l went, scrolling for hours and hours, watching other people living their lives and giving me advice on how to live mine.
As the months rolled by, YouTube turned my attention away from the hard reality of what was going on in the world. I subscribed to several channels and waited anxiously for new weekly offerings.
I watched people reading poetry or painting by streams or looking out windows into snowy landscapes. I found all this calming. Such lovely scenery, such beautiful background music, such pretty clothes they were wearing!
At some point though, I got upset by these artistic and seemingly perfect lives. Who is filming them I wondered. Do they rehearse or just act on the spot Isn't it cold, stepping through snowbanks in dresses The questions kept bothering me while forcing comparisons to my own somewhat more ordinary existence. I wanted to walk in a flowing dress through hilly green field filled with wildflowers! Instead, I was marching through my neighborhood's city streets in mom jeans.
In a moment of insight, I realized that I had a full and happy life, which although it wouldn't win awards for perfection onscreen, suited me perfectly. I put my phone away and started paying attention to my own life instead of watching other people live theirs. I still like checking in once in a while. YouTube can be a rich source of entertainment and inspiration, but I've limited my exposure. I am content with the knowledge that my addiction to life onscreen has been replaced by life itself.

Underwater travel is difficult and dangerous, but many people have to stay deep under the ocean. Thus, humans have come up with a few designs of vehicles to move around under the ocean. But what if there was a better way to travel
Hilary Bart-Smith, an engineer at the University of Virginia, thinks a vehicle that travels like a manta ray(魔鬼鱼) would be able to operate for long periods at sea. Manta rays which can grow up to 29 feet long are among the most efficient swimmers in the ocean. Different from animals and people pushing against water, manta rays swim by moving through the water with wing-like movements of their fins(鳍). Efficiency means using less energy to move farther.
Bart-Smith and other engineers at the University of Virginia had to find out what manta rays looked like on the inside to better understand how they move. They took X-rays to find out how a manta ray's fins are built. They found that a web of cartilage(软骨) stretches across each fin.
Once the engineers knew how a manta ray's fin was constructed, they could build one of their own. They made a long row of metal struts with many hinges to imitate the manta ray's web of cartilage. The engineers put their design inside a flexible cover, shaped like a manta ray's fin. Then they tested it in the university swimming pool. They were happy to see that it swam just like a manta ray in the ocean.
Engineers and scientists are still learning and experimenting with how to imitate these amazing animals. For now, engineers study their movements and learn from the most efficient swimmers in the ocean. Perhaps someday engineers will be able to build manta ray robots that are big enough to transport people.
28.How do manta rays swim
A.By moving like birds. B.By swimming like humans.
C.By swimming like other fishes. D.By pushing against water like animals.
29.What can we learn from the second and third paragraphs
A.Manta rays look like travel vehicles.
B.Manta rays are the fastest swimmers.
C.Manta rays can grow at least 29 feet long.
D.Manta rays'fins consist of a web of cartilage.
30.Why do the engineers study manta rays
A.To learn about their habits. B.To control manta ray robots.
C.To protect marine creatures. D.To design undersea vehicles.
31.What's the author's attitude towards the research
A.Supportive. B.Negative. C.Doubtful. D.Objective.
D
Feeling extremely stressed by your to-do list can make you unhappy, but a new study suggests that more free time might not be the magic way most of us dream it could be.
The researchers analyzed data from 35,000 subjects about how Americans spend their free time. They found that people with more free time generally had higher levels of subjective happiness—but only up to a pared to those with less time, people with up to two hours of free time a day generally felt better. However, people who had five or more hours of free time a day generally felt worse. So the free-time "sweet spot" might be two to three hours per day.
Part of finding this "sweet spot" is connected with how people spend their free time. In an online experiment, the subjects were asked to imagine having four to seven free hours per day and spending that time doing "productive" or "unproductive" activities. Most of them believed their well-being would suffer if they had a lot of free time during the day—but only if they used it unproductively. Though that experiment was based on the previous assumptions, which is one limitation, it agrees with other experiments showing that being in a state of flow(心流状态) can benefit people's mental health.
Of course, for you, any activities that increase your happiness are "productive". If watching soap opera in your free time makes you feel better, you should do that due to self-care. And some traditionally productive activities can be easy and fun. For example, walking and cooking can help burn stress and put people in a state of flow.
"In cases where people find themselves with large amounts of free time, such as retirement or unemployment," Sharif said, "our results suggest they can benefit from spending their newfound time with purposes."
32.How much free time one day do people have that can generally make them feel better
A. About 60 minutes. B. About 90 minutes.
C. From 120 to 180 minutes. D. From 180 to 210 minutes.
33.What does the third paragraph mainly tell us
A. How being in a state of flow can benefit people's mental health.
B. How the researchers analyzed data from the 35,000 subjects.
C. How "productive" activities are different from "unproductive" ones.
D. How people make use of their free time influences their happiness.
34.How can we understand the "productive" activities in paragraph 4
A. They must be fun and easy.
B. They are mostly traditional ones.
C. They depend on one's own sense.
D. They generally rely on one's own physical condition.
35.What did Sharif say to people who have a lot of free time
A. People should spend their time with aims.
B. It is not easy for people to have newfound time.
C. People can benefit from large amounts of free time.
D. Retired and unemployed people can't deal with free time well.

Time is a valuable resource, especially for those who need to deal with academic demands, personal growth, and social activities at the same time. Effective time management not only leads to increased productivity, but reduces stress. 36 Here are some strategies to help young adults master the art of time management.
Setting clear and achievable short-term and long-term goals is essential for youth. 37 They'll also distribute time accordingly. Whether it's studying for exams or pursuing personal interests, having well-defined goals provides a sense of direction. Meanwhile, importance levels of tasks can vary. By focusing on key tasks and minimizing time spent on unimportant ones, young adults can perfect their time management.
38 It makes efficient use of their time. Whether using a planner or a calendar app scheduling specific blocks of time for different activities, including study time, exercise, socializing, can lead to better time use.
Furthermore, learning to say no is a valuable skill for youth. With numerous opportunities and interests, it's easy to become overwhelmed. By being selective about commitments, young adults can arrange their time and energy wisely. Saying no to non-essential activities frees up time for important tasks. 39
In the pursuit of personal success, young adults often find themselves caught up in a series of responsibilities and commitments. However, it's essential for them to recognize that life shouldn't be like this. Self-care plays a vital role in time management. 40 By ensuring they maintain a healthy work-life balance, young adults can recharge their energy levels, improve focus, and increase productivity. That way, they perfect time usage and pave the way for success.
A. That actually prevents over-commitment.
B. One should constantly review how time is spent.
C. It creates opportunities for personal development as well.
D. Developing a daily schedule helps young adults stay organized.
E. Putting things off constantly is a common time management project.

China's Chang'e 6 lunar probe (探测器) has officially returned the first samples 56 (collect) from the far side of the Moon to scientists here on Earth, a major achievement 57 (highlight) the country's rapidly advancing space ambitions. The probe 58 (touch) down in Inner Mongolia on Tuesday, delivering the incredibly rare package, 59 is expected to include 2.5-million-year-old volcanic rock. The mission launched in early May and landed 60 (rough) a month later. Within just over 48 hours, the probe scooped up some samples using a drill 61 launched back into space to embark on its weeks long return journey. It even had time 62 (drop) off several scientific payloads on the lunar service, including an instrument that immediately detected the presence of negative ions. China became the first to touch down on the far side of the Moon in April 2019 and 63 (remain) the only country so far to have ever finished the mission— let alone twice. The Moon's far side, which permanently faces away from Earth, remains far less explored than its much better-understood near side. Its difficult terrain, which includes tall craters and massive boulders, makes 64 an extremely challenging place to explore. Scientists are hoping to confirm the 65 (available) of resources there, including water ice, which future explorers could use as a source of water, oxygen, and hydrogen.

Eleven-year-old Jack was selling balloons in a park one day over a long holiday weekend when he stepped upon a wallet. After picking it up, he searched the wallet to identify the owner and found some $100 notes, some loose change and a key card inside. He didn't hesitate to do the right thing: according to the sign on the key card, he found where the owner lived.
Seventeen-year-old Chase had lost his wallet earlier that day while out fishing with his friends. He had searched and searched, but in vain. Eventually, Chase returned home and found his wallet sent back in the gate house of the community. But the one who sent the wallet had left without leaving his name or address When the family were talking about the story later that day, they decided that they wanted to do something to pay back the finder's kindness. But what could they do They didn't know who the finder was, not to mention his address. Could they find him
It was when they were at a loss that a good idea occurred to Chase's mother, Michelle: they could check the monitor recording of the gate house. Luckily, they got a picture of the boy. She quickly made a Facebook post using the photo, describing the boy's honest act and expressing how the family were hoping to meet him to convey their thanks in person.
In no time at all, some people in the community recognised Jack and informed Michelle. When Michelle and her family got contact with Jack, they were surprised to learn just what Jack's family had been going through.
Jack's father had recently recovered from a disease but was still suffering from the aftereffects. He had difficulty breathing and wasn't allowed to return to his job at a meat packing plant. So that was the reason why the boy had to sell balloons to help support the family.

第四部分 写作
第一节
答案:
Dear Jennie,
Our class participated in a harvest activity at our school's labor garden last Saturday. I am writing to share this experience with you.
The day began with our teacher explaining the significance of hard work and the value of food. Then, equipped with baskets and gloves, we were divided into teams to pick tomatoes and cucumbers. As we filled our baskets, the satisfaction of harvesting something we had helped grow was immense.
This experience was not only fun but also deeply educational. Hope we can plan a similar activity together someday.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
答案:
Chase and his mother decided to help. Originally, they wanted to give a reward to the boy who demonstrated his integrity even when he was in such a great need of money, but now they thought Jack and his family needed more help. They mapped out a strategy. It was the Internet that helped them quickly find Jack, so they turned to the Facebook again. They posted photos of Jack's selling balloons, his story of returning the wallet and his family's suffering on the Internet, appealing to people to help.
The response online was great. The support came rolling in, quicker and in greater quantities than expected! Jack's story went viral. People living in the city visited the park where Jack sold balloons, and happily bought one or two. Besides, a store owner nearby offered an easy job to Jack's father. The kind man said he was impressed by Jack. "Nothing could be shinier than an honest heart and duty for the family for a child," he added. Indeed, an honest heart deserved all the best things in the world.

Text 10
Welcome to our new show, Colorful Animal Kingdom: a program introducing animals to the young and old. In today's show, I will talk about how to raise bearded dragons. Bearded dragons originate from the deserts of Australia, and this is one of several species that survive in that climate. Today, beardies like this one are fed here in the US. First, you need to have the right supplies: a cage or something like that, a UV bulb, branches and rocks to climb on and rest on, a food or water dish, and something to line the bottom of the cage. You can even take them outside three times a week in the direct sunlight. Then it comes to the dietary needs of a bearded dragon. They mainly eat insects, vegetables and the leaves of plants. Well, since bearded dragons traditionally live in dry regions, they obtain most of their water naturally from what they eat. You have to be sure to feed them plenty of vegetables that serve as good carriers of water.
