The British Museum’s rich collection of ancient Chinese paintings has attracted many visitors. At the heart of this preservation and revival of Chinese art history is senior conservator (文物修复员) Qiu Jinxian.
Joanna Kosek, head of Pictorial Art Conservation at the British Museum, told the Times Publications that. Qiu is considered one of the museum’s most priceless treasures. “We let the treasure treat the treasure,” Kosek said.
In 1987, Qiu was introduced to Mrs. Jessica Rawson, director of the British Museum. At the time there were no conservators specializing in ancient Chinese art at the British Museum. The large collection of Chinese ancient paintings and cultural relics in the museum was mainly repaired by Japanese and British methods and materials. As these methods were not suitable for Chinese paintings, the art collection was kept in storage for a long time instead of on public display.
Just before Christmas in 1987, Qiu Jinxian had her first appointment at the British Museum. She was asked to repair an ancient scroll (卷轴) by Fu Baoshi, which had been badly damaged by fire. Qiu’s methods, which included washing with warm water to separate the glue in order to repair the paper, stunned people on the spot. Some of them even took out of the camera to record her methods as they’d never seen this way of restoring ancient art. Mrs. Rawson was completely amazed by Qiu Jinxian’s incredible skills. She immediately invited Qiu to join the British Museum.
Chinese ancient paintings are pretty difficult to repair because of their large size, complex materials, diverse colors, and rich composition. The most important thing is to understand the long history, meaning and culture behind the painting. Repair is an extremely time and energy intensive process. Each painting normally takes several months from cleaning to restoration and drying. Since 1987, Qiu has repaired more than 400 artworks.
Qiu told the media that she is very proud of her work. She wants more people to understand and appreciate Chinese history and culture through art. Although the artworks originated from China, they now belong to the people of the world.
24.Why is Qiu considered a treasure at the British Museum
A.She has a high social status. B.She is good at public relations.
C.She has unique skills to repair artworks. D.She repairs Chinses sc roll quickly.
25.What can we learn from Paragraph 3
A.There was no Chinese art conservator in China.
B.Repair methods were ideal at that moment.
C.Chinese artworks were well displayed there.
D.Chinese artworks were in a state of being overlooked.
26.What does the underlined word “stunned” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A.inspired B.shocked C.judged D.alarmed
27.What is the author’s final purpose in writing the text
A.To highlight Chinese art history preservation.
B.To recommend outstanding ancient artworks.
C.To introduce the British Museum.
D.To honor a skillful conservator.

Space tourism is not all about rockets—giant space balloons can do it too! The Spain-based company HALO Space completed the first test flight of its balloon in December 2023. This marked another company’s joining the competition of making space tourism a reality.
During the test flight, the balloon reached an altitude of 37 kilometers where passengers would be able to view Earth from the blackness of space, according to Daily Mail. When the flights are available, the company aims to carry 3,000 passengers on 400 trips every year.
The balloon is usually filled with helium (氦气) or hydrogen, which are both much lighter than air, and it flies because of the buoyancy force (浮力). According to NASA, the balloon is filled with the amount of gas that will give it enough lift to get off the ground and rise. As it rises, the gas inside the balloon expands because atmospheric pressure drops. The atmosphere is 100 to 200 times less dense (稠密的) at float altitudes than on the ground. The balloon stops when the density of the gas inside and the air outside is about the same—neutral buoyancy (中性浮力) is achieved. It then begins to descend (下降) as gas is let out.
Therefore, the whole trip is not stressful. Another company that gives out space tours by balloons, the US-based Space Perspective claims that the trips are about relaxation. The craft (飞行器) rises slowly at 12 miles (about 19.3 kilometers) per hour, and it takes about two hours to get to the 30 km altitude.
Since its successful test flight in June 2022, Space Perspective started selling tickets for spaceflights in 2024—and it has already sold out. The company now buys ships to turn them into “floating spaceports”, reported Daily Mail. By lifting the craft from ships on the sea, there will be more launch opportunities, such as flights at sun rise and sunset.
28.What is the purpose of the test flight of the balloons
A.To teach people life skills in space. B.To make space travel come true.
C.To test the speed of the balloons. D.To sell more tickets for space research.
29.What’s the height of HALO Space’s first test flight
A.12 miles B.19.3 kilometers C.30 kilometers D.37 kilometers
30.What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A.The similarity of helium or hydrogen.
B.The reason for air pressure.
C.The space balloon’s working principle.
D.The features of the buoyancy force.
31.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A.Giant Space Balloons: A New Way for Space Tourism
B.Different Kinds of Spacecraft for Tourism
C.The Future of Rockets in Space Tourism
D.The Challenges of Space Tourism

A group of clams (河蚌) recently caught people’s attention after an article was posted by China Science Communication online. Although these clams are usually regarded as nothing more than delicious food, they work to monitor the local water quality in Poland.
Gruba Kaska pumping station, which stands in the River Wisla, helps provide millions of liters of water to Warsaw, the Capital of Poland. However, one particular concern for the water quality has been heavy metals, and researchers sought help from nature to solve this problem.
Clams are sensitive (敏感的) to pollutants in their environment as they filter (过滤) water to feed on microorganisms (微生物). They shut their shells immediately after detecting “dangerous” water.
Based on this, the researchers selected eight clams at a time and recorded the natural opening of their shells. After the clam “employees” become used to the local water, they are placed in a specially designed container. With sensors stuck onto their shells, the clams are connected to system that records how wide the shells are open.
If four or more clams close their shells at the same time, an alarm will be triggered (触发) and the water supply will be shut down. The result is reliable because the creatures are considering many different factors at the same time, according to ZME Science.
Animals have long been helpers for human activities. Farmers in north Queensland, Australia, have been ordering different species of dung beetles (屎壳郎) to help clean up cattle dung, according to ABC News. As the number of cattle grows, their waste increases, leading to an enormous population of flies and a worsening environment. Dung Beetles, however, take the waste and bury it. This way, they help improve soil quality.
Similarly, cockroaches (蟑螂) are used to deal with kitchen waste at several firms in China, according to a report of The Beijing News in 2018.About 300 million cockroaches are fed 15 tons of food waste on a daily basis, and they themselves are a good protein resource for livestock (牲畜).
32.Why did researchers look for help from clams to monitor water quality
A.They are good at sensing pollutants. B.They can help clear heavy metals.
C.They are inexpensive and easy to find. D.They live on microorganisms.
33.What will happen when four or more clams close their shells at the same time
A.The clams will be removed from their container.
B.The system recording the clams will break down.
C.The sensors on their shells will be changed.
D.The water supply will be turned off.
34.How do dung beetles help improve soil quality in north Queensland, Australia
A.By digesting harmful waste. B.By burying cattle dung in the soil.
C.By producing fertilizer (肥料) themselves. D.By controlling the loss of soil nutrients.
35.What can we infer from the text
A.Cockroaches are harmful to the environment.
B.Dung beetles can solve all environmental problems.
C.Clams are the only animals that can detect water quality.
D.Animals can play a role in solving some human problems.

I looked out at the smiling faces packed into the school hall. Flashes from cameras lit up in all directions. The applause filled my ears. I had done it. I had really done it.
Just a few months earlier, I would never have pictured myself acting in a play in front of two hundred people. “Not for a million dollars,” I would have said. But when the time came, I got up on stage and faced one of my greatest fears and discovered I could do more than I ever gave myself credit for. I found a new person inside me, a much more daring, outgoing person who had been hidden all along, just waiting for the opportunity to appear.
If not for my teacher, Mrs. Sather, I might never have found that opportunity.
In the first and second grade, I was extremely shy. I had friends, but it just wasn’t in my personality to be very outgoing, even when I knew someone well. I was afraid I would do or say something wrong, so usually I just smiled and listened to other people’s conversations. I did well in school and I loved to write. However, I would escape into my writing, where I could be myself and never had to worry about what other people thought of me. In my stories, I was never shy.
My teacher, Mrs. Sather, always encouraged me to write more. She told our class to go after our dreams and dig in with both hands. I think she was one of the first people to see my inner strength. One day, she announced that our class was going to perform a play she had written. “I’ll begin to cast everyone tomorrow,” she said. “I need someone who is not afraid to be on stage in front of a lot of people to play the lead part of Dorothy. Anybody want to try ” A few excited hands shot up—mine, of course, was not one of them and Mrs. Sather smiled. “We’ll talk more about it tomorrow,” she said. Then the bell rang and my classmates slowly left the classroom.

应用文(One possible version)
Starting high school has been both exciting and challenging. At first, I had butterflies in my stomach and was a bit frightened. However, as I explored the campus and took part in school activities, my nervousness turned into eagerness. Additionally, the support and guidance I received from teachers helped me become confident again.
As for the suggestions for us freshmen, my advice is to keep an open mind and embrace new experiences. When something put you under great pressure, stay calm and make the most of the opportunities you get.
Wish you a fulfilling and varied high school life.
(One possible version)
When I was loading up my backpack, Mrs. Sather asked me to go to her. Shocked and nervous, I tried my best to calm down and walked to her, with my palms sweating. Mrs. Sather stared into my eyes as if seeing my inner self locked away inside. “I would love you to give this a try for me. But if you really don’t want to, I won’t make you. It is your choice.” Mrs. Sather wanted me in this role. Astonishment crept upon me immediately, for I was always a shy person, not even dare to speak loud in public.
Hearing Mrs. Sather’s words, I realized it was time to make a change. I wanted to prove that I also could do something good in public. After seconds of hesitation, I nodded my head: “Mrs. Sather, I believe I can play the role well. And I will go all out to make the best of myself.” Hearing my determined words, a big smile lit up her face. “Great! Feel free to turn to me at any time.” It was exactly at that moment that I finally realized that what she said left a deep impression on me: challenges sometimes may put you under pressure, but it all depends on what you do. Just take action and you will get what you want.

M: Sounds great. Though I don’t like the idea of being on the street level.
W: Well, I’ve got another one on the seventh floor, where you can see the river from the window. It’s the same size as the other one, with two bedrooms and a fairly typical living area.
M: Hmm. It sounds nice. Is the price the same
W: No, it’s $75 dearer a week. Is that a problem
M: No, actually, it’s OK for me as long as it is no more than $350.
W: Good. When would you like to see the flat
M: As soon as possible really.

And to get your long-term ID, you’ll need to go to the student administration office, which is on the ground floor of the main building —don’t worry, I’ll show you where that is. Now, you have short-term IDs until the end of the week, but I wouldn’t wait until then if I were you. To get your long-term ID, you need to show your acceptance letter from the college plus one other form of ID documents, like a driver’s license, or a passport. You just fill out a form; they’ll take your picture and make your card while you wait. It takes only a few minutes. Um, okay, so, are there any questions before we start the tour

通读第三段可知,邱去大英博物馆之前,英国没有专门修复中国古代艺术品的修复员,英国日本的修复方法不适合,“the art collection was kept in storage for a long time instead of on public display”藏品长期被存放而未公开展出,从而推断出处于被忽视的状态。
根据第四段“Some of them even took out of the camera to record her methods as they’d never seen this way of restoring ancient art. Mrs. Rawson was completely amazed by Qiu Jinxian’s incredible skills.”

根据第三段内容“Clams are sensitive to pollutants in their environment…They shut their shells immediately after detecting “dangerous” water.” 根据第二段内容“However, one particular concern for the water quality has been heavy metals, …可知,文中只是说水质问题之一是重金属,但并没有提及河蚌可以清除重金属,故B选项错误。C选项,文章中未提及河蚌因价格便宜和容易找到而被用来监测水质。D选项,以微生物为食并不是被用来监测水质的原因。
33.细节理解
根据第五段“If four or more clams close their shells…and the water supply will be shut down.”,所以D选项正确。
根据第六段“As the number of cattle grows, their waste increases, leading to an enormous population of flies and a worsening environment. Dung Beetles, however, take the waste and bury it. This way, they help improve soil quality.”,所以B选项正确。
