You be the judge: should my phone-addicted friend go on a mobile detox
The prosecution (控方): James
My housemate and best friend spends every waking minute on TikTok. I know she works in social media,
but she’s now seriously addicted to it, even after she’s clocked of. Besides, she needs to stop playing videos

loudly around the house when I’m watching TV.
The defence: Marley
My job means I have to be on the ball with what’s trending online. I think James is jealous because he’s
got a rather boring job in accounting. I don’t go around playing videos at full volume all the time; I think
that’s only happened a handful of times. He’s exaggerating (夸张) there.
The jury (陪审团) of Guardian readers
While Marley’s use of TikTok may seem excessive to some, ultimately it is up to her how she chooses to
use her time. If James can’t accept that, he should move out.
Margo, 29
Marley needs to put her phone down, live in the moment and think less about her social media presence.
She is guilty of not valuing an honest friend because she thinks a better life awaits her on TikTok.
Stewart, 35
As a fellow phone addict, I do have sympathy for Marley. However, it’s more than a little rude to have
the sound turned on while watching TV together.
Peter, 40
The excessive use of social media is a crime and reflects poor control over social habits. Marley needs to
be more considerate of others.
Steve, 6
Now you be the-judge
In our reader feedback section, tell us: should Marley get off TikTok and get a life
21. What is Marley’s reason for spending time on TikTok
A. She finds an accounting job dull. B. She enjoys sharing popular videos.
C. She needs to stay updated on online trends. D. She prefers avoiding interaction with James.
22. Who is fully on Marley’s side
A. Margo. B. Stewart. C. Peter. D. Steve.

A. A legal paper. B. A court record.
C. A lifestyle survey. D. An interactive column.

Several decades ago, finding and writing to a pen pal was a regular thing and it was an exciting way to
make friends in different parts of the country. Over time, our world became “smaller,” and the practice
became unnecessary and uncool. It’s so easy to communicate with people across the globe through social
media platforms. However, as Peter Allen’s 1974 song reminds us, “everything old is new again.”
Teachers at Pearson’s Comer Elementary School (PCES) in Mechanicsville, Virginia, introduced their
students to the old tradition and added a new meaning on it in the process. PCES staff paired students with
residents at Hermitage Richmond Senior Living, and the students and their senior friends have exchanged
letters since September.
“Community connections and looking out for one another is as important as the air that we breathe and
so it does so much,” said the President of PCES, Kamryn Cummins.
Hermitage resident Daylon McCarty and eight-year-old Yosha Sreeraj met for the first time during the
school’s unique field trip. Daylon, who is seven decades older than her pen pal, is a former kindergarten
teacher. She expressed her excitement for the project, saying, “I used to teach kindergarten. So I love to see
them writing. It just helps them build their writing skills. And they asked me questions, and I asked them

what they’ve been doing.”
When they met face-to-face, Yosha — clearly, an energetic and curious little lady — learned, among
other fun facts, that Daylon once lived on the beach. There is so much that the young and old can teach one
another!
Wearing their PCES Panther T- shirts, students sang “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” before reading to
the seniors, playing games, and visiting. This was the second year the school’s second graders developed
friendships with Hermitage residents. And it’s been great for both young and old.
Jennifer Norton, Hermitage’s Director of Lifestyle and Wellness, said, “They have been writing each
other back and forth since September. And so now they get to meet each other in person. And it’s a special
and precious experience.”
24. What does the author think of writing to a pen pal
A. It is an old and gradually reborn practice. B. It has been widely adopted by schools.
C. It is an entirely new connecting way. D. It is an outdated and unnecessary tradition.
25. Why did PCES introduce students to the tradition of having pen pals
A. To teach them about other cultures. B. To pair them with international pen pals.
C. To help them bridge the generation gap. D. To get them involved in community connections.
26. What do we know about Daylon McCarty from the text
A. She lives on the beach now. B. She is energetic and curious.
C. She has retired and enjoys teaching. D. She has never had a pen pal before.
27. What is Jennifer Norton’s attitude towards the pen pal program
A. Indifferent. B. Opposed. C. Doubtful. D. Appreciated.

If a stranger offered you a free cookie, you might well eat it. But what if they offered to also give you $2
You might politely decline and walk away thinking, “Something smells fishy.”
In a study published in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, researchers found that people tend to
turn down offers of “free money,” as well as unusually cheap services, because they seem “too good to be
true.”
In the initial experiment, nearly 40 percent of participants ate a cookie offered freely — compared with
about 20percent of those offered $2 as well. “People typically imagine things like some one did something
disgusting to the cookie,” says study lead author Andrew J. Vonasch, a psychological scientist at the
University of Canterbury in NewZealand.
Nine further experiments used online questionnaires to present other cases. These included being offered
money to accept a ride home and surprisingly cheap flights. In each case, past a certain threshold (门槛 ),
higher potential monetary gain reduced participants’ likelihood of accepting the offer.
Vonasch says the study illustrates that contrary to the “standard economic model,” which supposes
humans always seek to maximize gains, transactions (交易) need to also be understood as social interactions
between people trying to understand each other’s minds.
If someone seems to violate accepted norms, such as self-interest, without any explanation, we assume
they have hidden motives and infer there will be “phantom costs”, imagined consequences that reduce what
Vonasch calls an offer’s “psychological value,” Factors beyond the present moment may come into play.
“Understanding that others’ perceived overgenerosity may put us in their debt could also help explain
people’s reluctance,” says Vonasch.
The researchers also showed how to mitigate (减轻) the effect: simply provide a reason for the deal. The

“cheap flights” experiment included a condition where the seats were revealed to be very uncomfortable.
“Uncomfortable seats aren’t typically a selling point,” Vonasch says. “But telling people the seats were
uncomfortable made them more willing to take them because it was sufficient explanation.”
28. Why might people reject an offer of $2 along with a free cookie
A. They dislike a money-related offer. B. They distrust the true value of the offer.
C. They think the offer is not good enough. D. They suspect the offer only lasts a short time.
29. What aspect of the nine further experiments is introduced in Paragraph 4
A. The moral concerns. B. The research method.
C. The experiments’ duration. D. The participants’ background.
30. Which psychological factor best explains the findings of the study
A. Fearful of “phantom costs”. B. Afraid of violating social norms.
C. Committed to the standard economic model. D. Unconcerned about an offer’s “psychological value”
31. Why does the author mention the “cheap flights” experiment
A. To stress the unpredictability of human choices.
B. To illustrate how hidden motives affect people’s choices.
C. To emphasize the importance of providing clear examples.
D. To show giving proper reasons can increase acceptance of offers.
D
The mission is simple. Arrive on foreign soil, fit in and wait. Then, when the time is right, emerge from
the shadows and take over. This procedure, familiar from spy fiction as the preserve of sleeper agents, is also
the strategy of certain invasive plant species.
Invasive species that stay put, known as sleeper species, are not hard-wired to do so. Their natural
tendency to expand is, instead, held back by some external factor. With the climate rapidly changing,
Bethany Bradley at the University of Massachusetts wondered whether alterations in temperature and rainfall
had the potential to activate some sleeper species. As she reports in a paper in Biological Inuvasions, the
answer is a definitive yes.
Dr Bradley and her team came to their conclusions by studying 1,795 plant species in north-eastern
America identifiable as foreign but not yet locally listed as invasive. Of these, 169 were unquestionably
demonstrating invasive behaviour in other parts of the world, and causing damage to their environment. That
suggested they had the capacity to cause similar damage in America too.
To determine whether the conditions coming to the region would activate any of the set 169, the
researchers first identified the conditions under which these species would thrive (旺盛 ). A number of the
plants on their list were held back by the cold winters that are less and less common in the region. They also
found that some other species required more rainfall than is typical.
According to the team’s findings, climate change is on track to awaken 18 sleeper species that could
cause serious environmental and economic problems. Dr Bradley estimates that they will start to make
themselves felt between 2040 and 2060 if something is not done soon.
The most practical course of action, in her view, is to seek these sleeper species out before they are able
to spread. Removing them today may be expensive, but it will be far cheaper than trying to weed them out
tomorrow.
32. What strategy do sleeper species employ
A. Rapidly expanding in new environments.
B. Patiently waiting for human intervention.

C. Remaining inactive until conditions are favorable.
D. Avoiding detection by staying in shadowy-corners.
33. What does the underlined word “hard-wired” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Slowly adapted.
B. Solidly supported.
C. Externally influenced.
D. Naturally programmed.
34. What did researchers aim to uncover by focusing on the 169 species
A. The potential risks they could pose in the future.
B. Their invasive behavior in other parts of the world.
C. The reasons why they failed to survive in America.
D. Possible ways to make them less common in America.
35. What’s Dr Bradley’s suggestion for dealing with sleeper species
A. Let nature take its course.
B. Prevention is better than cure.
C. Cutting budgets is a top priority.
D. Delay action until it’s necessary.

I hope this email finds you well. I’m writing to seek your assistance with a 2-minute book talk presentation. I’ll be
delivering at school.
I’ve chosen to recommend “Alice in Wonderland”, a book that has always fascinated me with its imaginative plot and
eccentric characters. It will definitely captivate my audience. However, I’m struggling to convey its unique qualities in such
a short time. Given your experience with similar presentations, I would greatly appreciate any tips you can offer on how to
structure my talk and keep the audience engaged.
I eagerly await your invaluable insights. Thank you in advance for your help.
读后续写
Realizing the severe situation, Hill ran out for help. She dashed to Mrs. Smith’s house, her small heart racing. “Mrs.
Smith, come quick! Mommy’s not moving!” she cried, her voice trembling with fear. Mrs. Smith, ever the composed
neighbor, followed Hill without delay, immediately recognizing the urgency of the situation. Upon entering Jennifer’s home,
Mrs. Smith found her on the floor, seizing. “Call 911, Hill, and stay on the line,” she instructed, her voice steady as she
began first aid. Hill, though scared, managed to relay the emergency to the operator, her mother’s lifeline.
Jennifer finally came to herself in the hospital. The sterile environment formed a stark contrast to the warmth of her
kitchen. As she regained consciousness, she saw Hill’s tearful face and Mrs. Smith’s comforting presence. The relief was
palpable; she knew her quick-thinking daughter and reliable neighbor had saved her life, reinforcing the bond of their little
family and the community that supported them.
