Ⅰ. Lead-in Q1: Do you like music What are the ways for people to experience music Q2: When we are apart, can we still experience choir? Justifications: lead in the topic and familiarize Ss with the new word “choir” Ⅱ. While-reading Activity 1 Explain scanning Justifications: By comparing the reading skill of scanning to pearl diving and listing four steps to scan, Ss can easily understand and master the skill, thus better prepared for the next reading task. Activity 2 Scan Para. 1 to define the word “virtual” Justifications: It’s a relatively easy scanning exercise. By applying the four steps to scan and identify the pearl to be found in this case, which is “virtual”, Ss can quickly find in its surroundings that “online” and “onto the Internet” are similar to “virtual” in meaning and thus understand the meaning of the title, namely “the choir online”. Activity 3 Scan Para. 1 again to know more about the virtual choir Ss will scan Para. 1 again to find out the answers to the following questions and therefore have a full understanding of the virtual choir. Q1. What is the virtual choir in nature (本质上) (the pear: item names) Q2. Who can join a virtual choir And Where can we join it (the pear: words indicating people and place) Q3. How to form a virtual choir (the pear: verbs) Q4. Why do people join a virtual choir (the pear:words indicating reason or significance) Activity 4 Video time After get all the information of the virtual choir, Ss will watch a video on Eric Whitacre’s What If to experience the online choir with their eyes and ears. Activity 5 Figure out the structure of the passage Activity 6 Scan Para. 2 and Para. 3 to finish the timeline about the creator and the creation of the virtual choir Justifications: during this activity, Ss will again practice their scanning and also master another reading skill, making a timeline, which will help them sort out a series of events in a time order. Activity 7 Careful reading Read Para. 2 and Para. 3 carefully to think about the following questions. Q1. What caused Eric Whitacre to fall in love with classical music Q2. How does the author describe Whitacre’s love for classical music Q3. What’s the function of the last sentence of Para. 2, “This lead to the creation of the virtual choir Q4. Justifications: Q1 and Q4 and the former part of Q5 belong to “detail-comprehension” exercises. Q2, Q3 and the latter part of Q5 lead Ss to appreciate the rhetorical devices employed in this passage, namely quotation, transitional sentence, figures. Q6 is an open question which provokes critical thinking. Hopefully, Ss will learn to analyze any success from both subjective and objective aspects. Activity 8 Identify the cohesive device used in Para. 4 (echo) Ⅲ. Post-reading (Further thinking) Q: How to understand “sing with one voice” in the last paragraph Justifications: By understand the last sentence of the passage, especially the phrase “sing with one voice” , Ss can have a deep understanding of the significance of the virtual choir in uniting people across the globe despite the great distance between us and the language we speak, which is exactly the essence of the sentence “Music is the universal language of mankind.” in the opening page. Ⅳ. Summary To sum up the class, Ss will be invited to evaluate and score their performance from the checklist to see if they have achieved the predesignated learning objectives of the class. Option 3 迁移创新类 Index of difficulty ★★★★★ Write a passage within 120 words to share you understanding of the sentence “Music is the universal language of mankind”.
