prefer意为“更喜欢”,为及物动词,其过去式和过去分词均为preferred。其后可接名词、代词、不定式或动名词作宾语。其具体用法归纳如下:
—Can I give you a lift 我可以开车送你吗
—No, thanks. I prefer to walk. 不用了,谢谢。我更喜欢步行。
·Tom prefers reading to talking. 比起聊天,Tom更喜欢看书。
·I prefer to make presents for my family by myself rather than buy some things in a store.我宁愿自己给家人做礼物也不愿意在商店里买东西。

prefer to do sth. rather than do sth.在意义上等同于would rather do sth. than do sth.。

I have a cat that loves to play with a ball of yarn (毛线球). The yarn, which is soft and colorful, is her favorite toy. I also have a friend whose dog is very friendly. The dog, which is small and furry, loves to chase a ball. Although we often play together, the cat is still unfriendly to the dog.

1.定语从句的概念
在主从复合句中作定语的从句称为定语从句。定语从句所修饰的词叫先行词,通常位于定语从句之前。定语从句是由关系代词that、which、who、whom、whose和关系副词when、where、why等引导的从句。关系代词和关系副词既起连接作用,又在从句中充当成分。
2.关系代词的用法

·Do you know the old woman who/that is standing under the tree 你认识站在树下的那位老妇人吗

注意:当关系代词在定语从句中作宾语时,该关系代词可以省略。

只能用that引导定语从句的情况:
(1)先行词是all、few、little、much、something、nothing、anything等词时。
(2)先行词被序数词或形容词最高级修饰时。
(3)先行词被the only、the very、the last修饰时。
(4)先行词既有人又有物时。

考点3 stick的相关用法

When I play with my little brother, he always sticks to me like glue because he feels safe when I’m around. I always tell him to stick to the path when we walk in the woods. I don’t want him to get lost. I also like to collect sticks to build a little fort (堡垒) in the backyard. I stick the sticks together with glue to make it strong. Sticks are also useful for starting a fire when we go camping.

(1)stick可作及物动词,也可作不及物动词,意为“粘贴;将……刺入”,其过去式和过去分词均为stuck。stick to意为“坚持;固守;紧跟”;stick...into... 意为“把……插入……”。

(2)stick作名词时,意为“枝条;枯枝”。

(1)shut作动词时,意为“关闭;关上”,和close 是同义词。shut 的过去式和过去分词都是shut。
·He shut his mouth and refused to say more. 他闭口不再多说话。
(2)shut off是固定短语,意为“关闭;停止运转”,和turn off 同义。
·Before going to bed, I need to remember to shut off the lights. 睡前我需要记得去关灯。

(1)pain作名词时,意为“痛苦;疼痛;苦恼”,既可作可数名词,也可作不可数名词。

(2)pain的形容词形式是painful,意为“令人痛苦的;不愉快的”,painful experiences/moments/lessons 意为“痛苦的经历/时刻/惨痛的教训”。
