In my school days, I was a shy boy and liked to hang out only with my group of friends. I never even thought of taking part in any public speaking events, school plays or stage contests, so acting was even a remote career choice then.
I still remember that evening so clearly. It was the last day of school and I was with my friends at our school farewell party. A personality contest was going on in which my classmates were participating, showing off their talents in order to win the admirable title (Mr or Miss School). From the sidelines I was watching them making their confident speeches on stage.
Suddenly, I heard my name being called out. I was shocked as to how that was possible! Full of fear, I walked up to the front of the stage, not sure of what I was going to do next. My teacher saw me panic-stricken and smiled at me gesturing that I must go. I refused to move until she pushed me onto, the stage. I don’t remember what 1 did up there as it was all a haze (迷糊)in my mind then, but I went on to win the title that year! I later found out that it was my teacher herself who had registered me for the contest in order to help me overcome my stage fear.
Now when I look back, I can’t thank her enough for the great contribution she has made in my life. If it weren’t for her, I would have never had the confidence to take up my first acting assignment (任务)soon after! It would have been impossible to start my journey on this path if it weren’t for the small but significant step she took that day, which has helped me become what I am today.

D. His teacher had told him about the contest.
8. What is the author's attitude towards his teacher?
A. Critical. B. Uncertain.
C. Grateful. D. Disappointed.

As I was coming into middle school, Grade 6, I was really excited because my friend Jennifer was going to be in the same school as me! At first, things were great. She introduced me to her friend Amy and we had lots of fun together. Then things started to change. Jennifer had a very strong control desire. I couldn’t make new friends, because she would think that I was mad at her and Amy if I hung out with other people: So I didn’t make new friends, and pretty soon being Jennifer’s friend was a struggle.
Most of the time we gossiped (说闲话)about people, and I soon realized that nobody was good enough for Jennifer. After months of living through school this way, I had really changed. I was moody (易怒的),depressed, lonely, and I didn51 smile much. I spent lots of days trying not to cry, but I felt left out.
Finally, near the very end of the school year, I stopped sitting with Jennifer at lunch and I stopped waiting for her after class. Jennifer quickly announced that I was mad at her. Our friendship fell to pieces.
It was tough at first, but soon I found a lot of girls who were the sweetest and friendliest people in the world. I’m in Grade 7 now, and I have tons of friends. They support me when I am sad, and I support them when they are in trouble. We have fun and happy times together and I love them all to bits. It amazes me how easy our friendship is. There,s no struggling to be on top. We,re all equal. I smile all the time now and I never feel lonely.
I wish Jennifer could understand that I still want to be friends with her, but I can’t limit myself to one friendship. Maybe one day she’ll look back at what happened and she’ll change, but even though I lost a friend, I am a happier person.

From now, if all goes well, a high-tech spacecraft will land in the South Pole of the moon. There, it will drill 66 feet down into the surface and collect samples of the mantle (地幔样本)to bring back to the Earth.
But before it leaves, it will have a two-part time capsule (时光锦囊):& Earth’s history, and a private part, full of digital memory boxes created by individuals. These memory boxes can hold digital files - records of family trees, videos or actual DNA in the form of human hair. Not everyone can have a digital memory box, though. The boxes are only delivered on behalf of the people who donate money to the project.
The project, called Lunar Mission One, has already raised more than half of its £600,000 goal since its launch (启动)just a few days ago. The founders thought that it would succeed because of the attraction of both exploring the lunar surface and leaving a time capsule behind. The mission was a technical action, but it was also an emotional one, bringing the excitement of knowing that something humans built on the Earth reached somewhere else in space.
Still, it does seem risky for a person to donate £60 to keep a digital memory box for a project that won’t come true until 2024. What if the project never takes off? What if the technology isn11 good enough? What if those digital memory boxes break on the moon’s surface? And how will anybody ever even know if that happens? Ian Crawford, a professor at Birkbeck College in London and scientific advisor to the mission, says it is not necessary to worry about these. The plan to leave a time capsule on the moon isn’t really about physically leaving something on the moon — it's more an opportunity to encourage people5 s interest in space.
13. Who can have a digital memory box on the moon?
A. A person who donated £60 to the project.
B. A person who has records of family trees.
C. A person who is on behalf of the project.
D. A person who is interested in exploring the moon.
14. What can be learned about Lunar Mission One from Paragraph 3?
A. The spacecraft was successfully launched just a few days ago.
B. It will explore the lunar surface and leave a time capsule on the moon.
C. It was inspired by the excitement of knowing something in space.
D. It was a technical action because it was designed with rich emotion.
15. Why does it seem risky to donate £60 to keep a digital memory box?
A. Because the spacecraft won’t be sent soon.
B. Because the technology isn't good enough.
C. Because the project won't come true until 2024.
D. Because there are various possibilities in such a long time.

Only by overcoming fear of failure can we achieve success in life. Here are some tips on how to remove fear and focus on success:
Understand that at times you make mistakes.
16 Before any of us learned how to walk, we crawled (爬行).We got up, fell down and got up again. We continued the process until we could walk expertly.
17 Instead, view it as a stepping stone. Make certain that you learn from failure and then apply what you’ve learned to future situations. Refuse to consider failure a character weakness. Doing so will only prevent you from achieving future success.
Remember that failure has produced many successes. 18 Albert Einstein's teacher told him to quit school and commented,“Einstein, you will never amount to anything!” Beethoven’s music teacher said he was hopeless to become a composer (作曲家) Henry Ford’s first two car companies failed.
Appreciate the benefits of failure. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “All life is an experiment. The more experiments you try, the better you make.” It,s hardly possible for someone to achieve success for the first time he tries. 19
Believe in yourself. Rather than give up when things don’t work out, take it as an opportunity to build perseverance (坚持不懈) Remind yourself how many failures became successful because they wouldn’t give up. 20
A. Don’t take failure personally.
B. Work hard and try to avoid failure.
C. Realize that you are human and humans make mistakes.
D. Believe that you’ve got what it takes to work through the difficult times.
E. Making the same mistake again can lead to the failure in your future work.
F. Consider how many people in history had failed before they became successful.
G. In other words, your chances of getting things right on the first try are slim (渺小的)to none.

Well, it might soon be tim0e to stop dreaming — because according to some of the world1 s top scientists, travel is no longer a science fiction and is close to 42 (become) a science fact.
In the UK’s Daily Mail, Prof. Stephen Hawking says, “Time travel 43 (be) once considered a scientific 44 (believe). I used to avoid talking about it 45 fear of being called a crazy man. He says we have to look outside our three-dimen-sional (三维的)world to the fourth dimension, where time travel will 47 (possible) come true. To get to this fourth dimension, we may need 48 tunnel (隧道),or what the scientists call wormholes. Prof. Hawking says these wormholes are all around us, but 49 are too small for us to see. 书面表达 (One possible version)
Dear Tony,
I am a senior high student now, and I’m so excited about my high school life that I can’t wait to share my expectations with you.
First, I plan to spare more time studying math to cover my shortage on it with my diligence. Heavy as the burden of the study is, I want to do social practices as the after-school activities, which can broaden my horizons as well as help me get relaxed. I know that only when I balance my time between the study and other activities well can I develop in an all-round way. But I have problems in scheduling the time. Could you give me some suggestions on it?
I’m looking forward to your reply. Thank you very much.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
