In an effort to help her students deal with difficult experiences, an English teacher Cassie Cox at Two Rivers High School had them write their life stories and now a book of the project is going to be published.
The students involved in the project were all between 16 and 18 years old and came from various situations. Several of the students had kept their experiences Bottled up and never talked about them before the project.
Marianne Carter, a student of hers, said writing about her life was hard but also a healing experience. Senior Maddalyn Jensen said the project also helped her build deeper relationships with her peers. “You get to know people on a more personal level that you wouldn’t know just by seeing someone in a hallway.” Jensen said.
Many of the students have jobs to support them-selves and some are homeless. However, the students involved in the project worked very hard on it and would work on it before and after school, during their lunch breaks and on weekends.
As a high school dropout (a person who leaves school before they have finished their study) and teenage mother herself, Cox said she understands a lot of what her students are going through. Now Cox has a master^ degree and teaches at the high school she eventually graduated from. She wrote her story and it will be included as the last part in the book.
“One good book — a single story, actually — changed my entire life,” she said. “Writing our stories just might have the same positive effect on another’s life some day that a single story had on my life.”
A book launch will be held for Through Our Eyes: In Black and White on March 19 at the Ben Lomond Historic Suites, which will include a reading and book signing. Books can be bought for $10 and the find will go towards doing a similar project next year.

Jack Lynch is an English professor. He was often asked various questions about the English language. Recently he wrote a book The Lexicographer's Dilemma, explaining some of the common questions.
The rules of the language aren’t some official set of instructions that are decided by a group of people. They are more a developing set of habits that all come together into the common practices of the speakers.
When people talk about proper English, they1 re really talking about a variety of English. It^ wrong to think there is only one kind of correct English and any difference from it is wrong. Actually there are many kinds of English, and the rules that we use to tell different kinds of English apart are more like table manners or fashion. They are just sets of behaviors that are shared by a group of people.
People have been speaking something we can call English for about fifteen hundred years. At first, it would sound a lot more like German to a modem speaker. For the first twelve hundred years of the language’s history, no one was particularly upset about how most people spoke.
Now, everyone recognizes some people who speak better than others, just as some people dress better than others and dance and sing better than others. It was only around the year seventeen hundred that people began getting concerned and began making rules for the way everyone must speak.
Some languages have never been bothered with this sort of thing at all. But for many of the major European languages, there are official, government-sponsored (政府资助的)academies That determine what the proper form of the language is. There's nothing like that in any English-speaking country.
Every language changes all the time and English is no exception. That’s simply a fact of life and you can like that or you can be upset about it, but you have to accept it.
9. Why did Jack Lynch write the book The Lexicogra-pher's Dilemma?
A. To explain the results of his recent study.
B. To prove that English is still developing fast.
C. To show English is still very popular with world-wide speakers.
D. To explain some of the commonly asked questions about English.
10. From Paragraphs 2 and 3, we can learn that____.
A. the rules of languages are decided by some people
B. any difference from the “proper” English is wrong
C. English rules are the same as table manners or fashion
D. English has different rules shared by different speakers
11. What can be inferred from Paragraphs 4 and 5?
A. English has a history of about 1,500 years.
B. English had a great influence on German.
C. Rules for English have existed since the 18th century.
D. There were no rules for English in the first half of its history.
12. In Jack Lynch opinion, language changes are_____ .
A. upsetting and acceptable

When do you usually go to sleep? How much sleep do you usually get every night? If you’re like many other American teenagers, it’s quite likely that you usually don’t get enough sleep at night.
Sleep problems among teens are nothing new. But according to new research, sleep among teenagers in the US has grown worse over the past twenty years. Researchers at Columbia University examined how 272,000 teenagers slept from 1991 to 2012. According to their findings, teenagers today are sleeping less than teens in the 1990s, and there has been a continuous (持续的)drop in sleep over those years. In 1991, 72 percent of 15-year-olds slept at least seven or more hours a night. In 2012, only 63 percent of 15-year-olds were sleeping for at least seven hours nightly.
The study also found that sleep among teenagers drops greatly as they age through adolescence (青春期).At age 13, well more than half of teens in 2012 were sleeping for seven hours a night or more. By age 18, about one third of teenagers were sleeping that much.
Sleep problems can lead to higher risk of alcohol use and the dangerous behaviors caused, by drinking alcohol, a new study found. Poor sleep also makes teens more likely to experience other health problems. Not getting enough sleep can harm teens9 attention and lead to poorer performance at school. Teens with sleep problems are more likely to be upset.
The National Sleep Foundation advises that teenagers aged 13-17 should sleep for 8 to 10 hours a night. There’s a lot of working against teenagers when it comes to getting this much sleep on a regular basis. Having a lot of homework to do makes a 9 or 10 pm bedtime difficult. School schedules start early in the morning. So it’s not difficult to see why so many teens are so short on sleep.
Now it’s time to make a change for the sake of the health of teenagers.
13 . A new study found that_____.
A. teenagers are sleeping less and less
B. teenagers are getting busier than before
C. teenagers in the 1990s didn’t get enough sleep
D. most of today’s teenagers sleep over seven hours a night
14. What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
A. Students who don’t study well usually don11 sleep enough.
B. Alcohol use can lead to poor sleep among teenagers.
C. Being upset prevents teenagers from falling asleep.
D. Not having enough sleep is harmful to teenagers.
15. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 5 suggest?
A. Teenagers don’t know how to sleep well.
B. Teenagers try really hard to get enough sleep.
C. It’s difficult for teenagers to get enough sleep.
D. It takes time for teenagers to change their sleeping habits.

Reading books can be a great way to pick up new vocabulary, see grammar in action and develop your understanding of a language. 16
For beginners, I would recommend starting with something short and simple. Avoid the classics for now — they often use very old English words and can involve complex (复杂的) themes. Children’s books are a great place to start. 17 Dr Seuss writes his books in rhyme (押韵) and they are all very funny. Starting with something like this means you are more likely to finish the book and want to read more.
18 The book isn’t too long and if you’ve seen the film it may be easier to follow. If you like reading about historical events, Anne Holm’s I am David is a good read.
If you’re not quite ready to read a full book, why not try Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes!
19 Or, try a very short book —- like one from Roger Hargreaves1’s Mr Men and Little Miss series. Although they are intended for young children, they are a good way to pick up some more basic vocabulary.
My final piece of advice would be to read something that interests you. Look at the short summary of the book on the back cover and see if it looks like something that you would enjoy.
20 This way, you’re more likely to enjoy reading, rather than see it as a headache.
A. Dr Seuss5 s books arc guaranteed to make you lau^i.
B. The key to success is choosing the right book for you.
C. Reading can bring you a lot of fun as well as knowledge.
D. For more advanced learners, you could try The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien.
E. Think about the type that you enjoy in your own language and find one of to type in English.
F. How much you can understand a book depends on your vocabulary.
G. This book contains lots of short stories, based on fairy tales, all written in rhyme.

书面表达 (One possible version)
It’s almost two weeks since I came to this new school. So far, I have known all my teachers. They all leave a very good impression on me because they are very kind and knowledgeable. But I like my English teacher Miss Wu best. She is young and patient, but strict in our study. Her teaching method is nothing like that of all my previous English teachers. In her class, we learn everything easily from an article, even grammar! She is more like a friend to us, so we never feel embarrassed when we make mistakes in her class. With her teaching us, all of us are making rapid progress in English.
