Books can be hugely valuable purely for the information they contain. But when books become really uncommon, or are connected with a historical event, their prices can rise to crazy levels. Now let’s look at what are the most expensive books in the world.

I have just arrived in a country where I don’t know the language, where I have no family roots and where I find myself all alone. It may sound frightening. But let me tell you a little secret: it is not.
When you travel abroad by yourself for whatever reason — exchange program, internship, volunteering, or simply as a tourist — a new and fascinating world will open up for you. A world you would have never been able to see if you had just stayed at home.
People from a different country are not aliens. They are simply people like you who happened to be born in another region. They have pretty much the same wishes and worries as people from your own country.
I know that you see a lot of news on TV saying terrible things people do all the time. Your family may have spent a great deal of time telling you not to trust strangers. However, when you travel alone you will realize that people are just as good as you. Everyone is just living their lives, working, studying and having a good time with their friends. Most people will be happy to help you and get to know you.
Maybe in the past when you would need months to travel from one place to another, travelling could be expensive. Nowadays, the world is just so connected that it is perfectly possible to find cheap flights, accommodation (住宿) for all budgets and cheap and quality food.
You will get lost, but it’s fine! I can’t even count how many times I didn’t know where I was going or how to find the right direction. Everything looks great on Google Maps, but sometimes your phone will die or your data will end. Just calm down. Go to a store or stop someone in the street and ask! Or simply walk around and be curious!
5. Why does the author write about his own experience in Paragraph 1?
A. To encourage people to travel.
B. To tell the benefits of travelling.
C. To show it is hard to travel alone.
D. To introduce the topic of the passage.
6. According to Paragraph 2, we can learn______
A. the reasons why the author goes abroad
B. travelling abroad can open up our eyes
C. most people go abroad simply for volunteering
D. travelling abroad is better than travelling at home
7. The underlined word “aliens” in Paragraph 3 probably refers to people who______.
A. don’t like you
B. are not good-looking
C. are different from you
D. have the same wishes as you
8. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?
A. Don’t trust strangers when travelling alone.
B. The terrible foreign news on TV is not true.
C. People don’t care for travelers from abroad.
D. Don’t worry too much about travelling alone.
C
Many years ago I worked in a psychiatric (精神病学)hospital. I spent a great deal of time with a gentleman who had been in this hospital for many years. He never had any visitors at all — no family or friends to visit him. He never spoke, or seemed to understand anything that was said to him, nor would he react in anyway to a question asked. In this person’s history,it appeared that he had a very important career where his intelligence (智力)made him a very successful man. Unfortunately, his career was cut short and he ended up needing complete care.
One morning, I was attending to his needs all the while talking to him about what was happening in the local community. You see, I believe that real conversations are more important than no conversation at all and that it is important to treat everyone with respect. I was busy dressing him after his bath, putting his clothes on, and then helping him to a chair when, totally unexpectedly, he turned directly to me and joined in a spirited, knowledgeable and focused discussion on a specific local event that I had been talking to him a few seconds before. This lively discussion lasted for no more than thirty seconds and then he suddenly stopped, looked straight ahead and no longer spoke. Despite my efforts to make the discussion continue, he just sat and looked straight ahead.
It was amazing. When he started to speak to me, I thought that I had made a breakthrough that would allow him to leave the hospital for good. Now I think maybe it was a little wonder. I suppose his speech might result from his neurons (神经元)connecting again for a short moment.
Maybe his speaking was just a little “thank you” for the little kindness I gave him. Maybe life is supposed to be like that — a little giving means a lot to others.
9. What can we know about the gentleman from Paragraph 1?
A. He became ill because no family or friends visited him.
B. His success might have a lot to do with his intelligence.
C. He could do nothing but react to a question.
D. His illness was connected with his career.
10. What kind of people is the author?
A. Kind and brave.
B. Caring and high-minded.
C. Selfish and cruel.
D. Smart and honest.
11. The author spoke to the gentleman that morning in order to______.
A. make him know what happened
B. make a conversation with him
C. merely show respect for him
D. expect a wonder to happen
12. What may be the best title for this passage?
A. Kindness may work wonders
B. The importance of giving
C. Helping a patient in need
D. A story in the hospital

书面表达 (One possible version)
Last summer holiday, I went to Beijing with Tom who came to visit China.
We joined a day-tour group with a tourist guide and arrived at the Great Wall early in the morning. Lost in huge crowds of people, we began our climbing, stopping once in a while to listen to our guide and enjoy the beautiful scenery along the way. I couldn’t help feeling proud of the great work our ancient Chinese did in the past and Tom just couldn’t believe such a huge project was created out of human hands! Tired as we were, we felt truly happy.
It was really an unforgettable experience and I hope I can travel more because traveling broadens our horizons.
