Cell phone use and texting (发短信)are increasingly common, especially among teens. And that could be a problem. Texting affects learning and performing on tests, a new study finds. So a Montana teen, Colter Norick, 17, and his 16-year-old brother Colin decided to test that.
They asked 47 classmates to take part in a two-part experiment. The goal was to test how well these students understood written material. Each one had to read a paragraph or two about a certain topic, then answer questions about it.
In the first part, the participants (参与者)had 15 minutes to understand and then answer questions about six readings. Throughout this test, they met no distractions (分散精力).
During a new set of readings, the brothers sent messages to the participants5 cell phones every 90 seconds. In each message, there were questions that required a reply.
Participants should have scored better on the second test because it was easier. In fact, they scored worse when distracted by messages. Only a few students scored as well when replying to messages as they did when undistracted. But importantly, nobody performed better during the texting part.
The brothers presented details of their findings at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. Boys and girls scored equally poorly while texting, the brothers noticed. Older participants didn’t do any better than younger ones. And it didn’t matter if a student thought he was good at multitasking (多任务处理)On average, the brothers found that even students who were confident of their abilities did just as poorly while texting. Surprisingly, even though the students remembered less of what they read while texting, most of them answered questions in messages perfectly.
“Our teachers are very happy to see these results,” says Colter. The teens, new data strongly support their teachers’ opinion that texting while studying is a serious distraction.
5. What did Colter and Colin want to test?

7. From the results of the experiment, we can find________.

Why does nearly everyone look more attractive with sunglasses on? You know you’re at least a little curious. And so is Vanessa Brown, a senior lecturer of art and design at Nottingham Trent University in the U.K. Her research focuses on the meaning of everyday objects we wear, and in her new book that5 s coming out soon, she explores the cultural and psychological (心理上的)relationship between sunglasses and our modem idea of “cool”, In an email to Science of Us, Brown explains what her research has shown why most of us look better in sunglasses.
Sunglasses really do make your faces look better. Put on a pair of sunglasses, and instant symmetry (对称)! The dark eyeglasses cover up any non-symmetrical features around your eyes, and research on facial attractiveness shows a clear link between symmetry and our sense of beauty.
“The eyes are such a great source of information for the human being,” Brown explained. Eye contact helps us form judgments about someone’s intelligence, confidence and sincerity, and sunglasses keep us in the dark about forming those feelings about a person. One recent study showed that people who wore sunglasses acted more selfishly and dishonestly than those wearing eyeglasses, which suggests that sunglasses cheat us into feeling more unknown.
Sunglasses are relatively modem everyday things. Sales started to rise in the 1920s, but they didn’t become common until about two decades after that. In their early days sunglasses were used during risky water and snow sports, and were also related to new technologies like airplane travel.
Soon after that, Hollywood stars of the 1950s and 1960s started wearing sunglasses to protect themselves from being recognized by the public or bothered by paparazzi (狗仔队),whose flashbulbs (闪光灯)would often explode violently, sometimes in their faces. But regardless of practicality, movie stars’ use of sunglasses strengthened the link between sunglasses and attractiveness.
13. According to the passage, Vanessa Brown________.
A. is an expert on designing sunglasses
B. keeps regular contact with Science of Us
C. is curious about how people can look better
D. will have one book published based on her research
14. According to the passage, sunglasses__________.
A. came into being in the 1920s
B. began to get common in the 1940s
C. were just used in dangerous activities in the past
D. are now popular with movie stars worldwide
15. What is the purpose of the author’s writing the passage?
A. To introduce the development of sunglasses.
B. To explain the role sunglasses play in our daily life.
C. To stress the effects of sunglasses on our image.
D. To show the reasons for people’s wearing sunglasses.

Learning to treat people with respect will help you in your friendship. Here are some ways to help you show respect for a friend.
Respect their life choices and decisions.
Some people will make different life choices and have different ideas on many things. 16 But it means that you’ll need to take a step back and show respect. Don’t blame their choices, even when you disagree.
Don’t draw a conclusion without evidence (证据).
17 You receive no letters from friends for long, so you imagine they5 re angry with you. Then you get angry because you don’t know why they’d be mad at you. Then you decide you’re not going to talk to them. Arid suddenly, you’re ready for an argument with them because you thought too much. If you doubt something, ask your friends. Be respectful and think nothing wrong happens if there’s no evidence.
18
One of the best ways to respect someone is to listen to them fully. Allow them to stop, think, collect their thoughts and get it all out. Too often fiends listen with half an ear, which is very disrespectful. When your friends are talking, pay attention.
Be there and do what you promise to do.
No one likes unreliable (不可靠的)friends. 19 Or someone who is only around to support you when things are great but then disappears when things get bad. Show friends the best kind of respect: being on time, keeping promises, and being the friend they can always count on. 20
A. Don’t stop your friends while they are speaking.
B. This doesn’t mean they can’t be your friends.
C. You should trust your friends as much as possible.
D. Give your full attention to your friends.
E. They say they’ll be there and then don’t appear.
F. That’s the way to truly show respect.
G. Imagining is a dangerous thing.

书面表达 (One possible version)
Today we performed an experiment in the chemistry class, and the aim of this experiment is to find out whether the gas we breathe out is mainly carbon dioxide or not.
To carry out the experiment, we need the following tools: two water channels; two gas collectors (250ml); glass sheets; some glass tubes; some matches and water. First, collect breathe-out gas by blowing into a gas collector inverted in water. When the collector is full of gas, cover it with a glass sheet. Next, fill the other gas collector with air. After that, put burning matches into the two collectors respectively. We can see the flame in the breathe-out gas collector dies, while that in the other gas collector is strong. In conclusion, what we breathe out is mainly carbon dioxide.
