If you are looking for a special gift for a mother or a grandmother who loves children’s books, here are some books I recommend.
Everything I Need to Know I Learned From a Little Golden Book
It is not only a children,s book, but a perfect gift. It is a humorous “guide to life” for grown-ups. Using illustrations (插图)from classic Golden Books, the author Diane Muldrow provides advice for a happy life. What makes the book so much fan is the illustrations that provide a trip down memory lane for anyone whose childhood was filled with Little Golden Books. The publisher is Random House. The book was published in 2013.
What the Dormouse Said: Lessons for Grown-ups from Children's Books
If your mother or grandmother loves children’s books, she’ll certainly enjoy this book, a collection of quotations (语录)from more than 200 children’s books. As Judith Viorst says in the book’s foreword (前言),the children’s book offers life lessons we need to remember, think about, enjoy and learn from. Algonquin Books is the publisher of the book, which came out in hardcover in 1999 and in paperback in 2004.
Pieces: A Year in Poems & Quilts
This book is an excellent choice for a mother or grandmother who appreciates the beauty of handmade quilts and enjoys poetry. Each of the 20 poems about nature by Anna Grossnickle Hines is illustrated with a beautiful tiny quilt created by Hines. Hines includes an interesting section on making the quilts at the end of the book. The book was published in 2003 by HarperCollins.
Love to Mamá: A Tribute to Mothers

S. Barragán. M. Lee & Low Books is the publisher.

I like making friends very much. I don’t only make friends in real life, but also make friends on the Internet. Thanks to computers and the Internet, now we can meet many new people and develop new friendships. And some online friendships can even become real-life ones. Some people do not think we can develop friendships on the Internet. And some think online friendships can never become real-life ones. If you also think so, I have to say you’re wrong.
Let me share an example. My mother’s friend Ram was introduced online to a wonderful woman named Maya Bisineer by a mutual (共有的) friend, Rajesh Setty. Maya is the founder of Memetales — a great marketplace for children’s picture books. She is also the Director of Education at Social Media Club, Seattle. Ram introduced my mother, who is a children books’ author, to Maya through Twitter, and they started exchanging tweets, too. It turned out they had a lot in common and became good online friends soon. Yesterday, they met in person. My mother found it such a pleasure to meet her in person, and they both felt much closer.
Another example is about me. Rachael studies in another high school in my city. She loves doing volunteer work. I became friends with her through email. After we found we both liked doing volunteer work, we decided to do volunteer work together. Now we’re close friends and often volunteer together.
Have you developed your friendships from online to offline? If you haven’t, you should try it out. You may make some good friends in the end. But be careful and avoid being cheated by others.
5. By saying “you’re wrong”,the writer probably means _________.
A. it’s safe to make friends online
B. you should make friends in real life
C. there are no true online friendships for adults
D. online friendships can become real-life ones
6. Whose mutual friend is Rajesh Setty?
A. Ram and Rachael’s.
B. My mother and Ram’s.
C. Ram and Maya Bisineer’s.
D. My mother and Maya Bisineer’s.
7. The writer’s mother and Maya became good friends probably because _________.
A. they had many mutual friends
B. they had interests in common
C. they often met each other offline
D. they both wrote children’s books
8. What do both the writer and Rachael like doing?
A. Making friends online.
B. Chatting online.
C. Doing part-time work.
D. Helping others.

We had two young kids and lived in town. Both my husband and I worked long days. As a result, we didn’t have much time for our kids. They often stayed alone in the house when we were out. They weren’t happy, as you can guess. One day, my husband and I decided to buy a dog for them to make them happier.
Our kids loved that idea. We started searching newspapers, and it wasn’t long before we found puppies for sale. So we decided to hike from one small town to another and found an old farmhouse. Our kids were way ahead of us running as fast as they could to see what their puppy is like. “She’s under the sofa,” the owner said with a smile.
And that’s when we got our first look at the little dog. My daughter picked up the brown-and-white pup with soft ears and paws. She looked up with the biggest and brownest eyes I’d ever seen, and I said, “We’ll take her.” And after we took Sadie home, our kids often ran outdoors with her after school. They became so much happier.
Two years ago, my husband and I decided to move to the countryside. On the day we moved, we loaded Sadie in the truck. By the time we reached our new house, Sadie was beyond herself with joy. As we pulled into the driveway, she gave a bark of excitement. She ran here and there happily. Seeing how happy she was, I thought of the days our kids were left alone at home. I realized what a big role the dog had played in their lives!
I should thank Sadie. Because of her, our kids had a much happier childhood.
9. Why did the writer and her husband want to buy a dog?
A. They loved dogs very much.
B. They wanted to cheer up their kids.
C. Their kids strongly asked them to do so.
D. They needed one to watch over their house.
10. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 shows the kids _________.
A. liked running very much
B. missed the dog very much
C. couldn’t wait to see the dog
D. saw the dog before the house
11. What do we learn about Sadie from Paragraph 4?
A. She often visited the country.
B. She wasn’t happy in the town.
C. She loved her new home very much.
D. She looked for another dog here and there.
12. The writer thinks that thanks to Sadie, _________.
A. she could work much better
B. they came to the countryside earlier
C. their life in the countryside was safer
D. her kids lived a much happier life

Amazon.com has received a patent (专利)right to send its products to customers by drone planes. The company is the largest US-based online seller of products. It delivers (传送)those products to customers by mail and other services. Now, the company has received a patent for its planned drone delivery system.
In March, federal officials allowed Amazon to test its drone delivery plan. But even with a patent and the ability of drones to make deliveries, it does not appear the company will put its new delivery system in place any time soon.
The US Patent Office published the document. It describes Amazon’s plans to use GPS to deliver products to homes and to wherever people are. The drone will use a customer’s mobile device — usually a smartphone — to avoid hitting people or buildings and to find a secure area to land. The company wants to deliver products within 30 minutes after people ordering them on its website.
However, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is worried about the safety. Although it allowed Amazon to test the system, the agency said the operators must be able to see the planes. That greatly limits (限制) the delivery area.
Loretta Alkalay is a professor at the Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology in New York. Although Amazon is not yet offering drone delivery, Professor Alkalay says it will not be long before it does. She says there are worries that the drones will hit buildings or people, or that the products and drones will be stolen or damaged by people on purpose. But she says that is because many people believe the drones would only deliver the products to the front door of a house. “However, it is possible that homes will one day have special areas on their roofs designed to receive product deliveries,” she adds.
13. What is special about the new delivery system?
A. It can deliver heavy products by plane.
B. It uses planes without human operators.
C. It can deliver many products at a time.
D. It is much safer than other delivery ways.
14. The underlined word “secure” in Paragraph 3 means “_________”.
A. safe B. large
C. special D. empty
15. After reading the passage, we can infer that FAA _________.
A. doesn’t really like Amazon
B. totally supports the drone delivery system
C. doesn’t think Amazon should get the patent
D. doubts about the drone delivery system

Communicate with your teen about what he wants his 16th birthday party to be like. 16 Others might want to just have a small celebration with a few family members and close friends. 书面表达 (One possible version)
Honestly, reading the email, I am excited and happy. After all, I have never received such a big prize. However, on second thoughts, I believe it must be a trick since I am asked to transfer money to them. As the saying goes, “There’s no such thing as a free lunch.”
In fact, the same tricks are often reported by the media. What’s more, our teachers and parents also warn us not to believe strange emails, calls, text messages, especially those related to money and personal information. I will delete the email without delay, avoiding being disturbed. Meanwhile, I will warn my friends and neighbors against such tricks in daily life.
