About two years ago, I was “surviving” on 1,200 calories a day. And I was exercising those 1,200 calories away. I hated my body. I hated counting calories. I hated exercising. I hated starving myself. I hated what my life had become. I realized that I wanted to be healthy and live my life to the fullest. Once I realized that, I was ready to make changes.
The first thing I did was stop counting calories. The second thing I did was start eating healthy foods.
I filled my cupboards with nuts, seeds, grains, nut butters and healthy oils. I loaded up on fruits and vegetables. I stocked up on herbs and spices (调味品). I went through blogs and books, and found recipes (食谱).I started making real food. I stopped buying highly processed foods. Once I stopped eating junk food, I stopped wanting junk food, and I started to turn to real food. I read ingredient (原料)labels. I didn’t buy products that had ingredients that I didn’t recognize as food. I avoided chemical colors and preservatives (防腐剂). I began to see that I could make many delicious foods at home!
Each week in the summer I go to a farmer’s market stand, and pick up a box filled with vegetables. But otherwise I get everything I need at the local grocery store. The best thing about eating healthily is that the food you eat is basic. Almost everything I buy is on the outside part of the store: nuts, seeds, grains, Suits and vegetables. And I try to buy locally whenever possible, as it not only provides me with the freshest foods, but also strengthens the local economy, and greatly reduces my environmental effect on the earth.
Now I feel great!

I read in the news yesterday that the ancient temple in my city is going to be tom apart. A modem building will be built there. After reading the news, I felt very sad. The temple looks very great and I really love walking in it. I really hope it’ll remain there. I don’t think I’m alone. Many people in my city love that temple.
Most nations around the world have at least some or possibly many old historical buildings such as temples, churches and houses in their cities and villages. In my opinion, it is very important to keep them, but this does not mean progress should stop.
Protecting old historical buildings is important for several reasons. Firstly, they provide an insight (见识)into the history of our country, showing us how people lived their lives many centuries ago. Without them, we could only learn by books, and it would be sad if this were the only way to see them. Many of these historical buildings are also very beautiful. Take many religious buildings such as churches and temples that we see around the world for example. Not only this, but on a more practical levels many of these buildings help a country make money as many tourists visit them.
However, this certainly does not mean that modernization (现代化)should be discouraged. For example, in many cases we see old historical buildings being restored (恢复)while keeping their original character, and being used for modem purposes. Also, in no way does history prevent progress, and in fact it is the opposite. By studying and learning about our history, we understand more about the world we live in, and this helps us to build a better future.
To conclude, I believe that it is very important to protect and keep old historical buildings. Through doing so, we can learn about our history. Such knowledge can help us to understand how to modernize our country in the best way.

C. Protecting old historical buildings.
D. Understanding our world better through history.
12. What is the text mainly about?
A. How modernization ruins our life.
B. What we should learn from history.
C. Why old buildings should be protected.
D. Why people want to protect old buildings.

For years, most people thought of plankton (浮游生物)as food for whales and other large sea animals. But a four-year-long study found that plankton is a very important reason why there is enough oxygen on our planet.
Plankton is a group of different ocean creatures, algae (藻类),bacteria and other organisms (微生 物).They live dose to the water,s surface in oceans, seas and lakes. Plankton cannot be seen without a microscope. But they are the main source of food for larger animals, like whales.
Recently, 200 scientists from 45 countries took turns to research plankton on a big boat. The boat set sail in September, 2009. It visited 210 areas. The scientists collected 35,000 samples (样品)of plankton. The researchers followed the lives of plankton and watched their movements.
A French group called Tara Expeditions started the project, known as Tara Oceans. Chris Bowler worked for the project. He says the researchers found that plankton is very important to the health of our planet. Mr Bowler says almost half of the oxygen we breathe comes from very small algae called diatoms. That basically means every fifth time that we breathe, we’re breathing oxygen, which we can directly trace back to diatoms. So they’re as important as a tropical rainforest in terms of their global contribution.
Romain Trouble is the director of Tara Oceans. He believes the study shows that the ocean greatly affects the earth’s climate. He said, “We believe that the ocean is also a main driver of the climate change. The ocean and the life in the ocean are storing CO2 and heat. And this works because the ocean is in good health.”
13. What did the four-year-long study show?
A. Large sea animals like eating small things.
B. Much of the earth’s oxygen comes from plankton.
C. Plankton serves as the main food for large sea animals.
D. We don’t need to worry about oxygen on our planet.
14. How did the researchers arrive at their findings?
A. By studying oxygen on the earth.
B. By following the lives of larger animals.
C. By studying 35,000 samples of plankton.
D. By reading a lot of reports by former scientists.
15. By comparing diatoms to a tropical rainforest, the author wants to show .
A. most of them live in oceans
B. they’re very important to the earth
C. more oxygen is produced by diatoms
D. they play a key role in the tropical rainforest

5 things to do when you get to college
Education goes far beyond worldly success, and very far beyond success in terms of money. You have an opportunity to learn what it means to apply your mind to some of the best thinking. 16 So what should you do to begin to experience a college education?
Become responsible and independent.
17 You need to learn how to do this by yourself. Instead of simply finishing the tasks set by others, you need to become responsible for choosing your own goals. This is the most important thing you can do in college.
Don’t look for easy answers.
Learn to ask your own questions and trust the power of your mind. 18 This education belongs to you, and the best testing will be your tests ——the tests you bring to whatever you read and hear, examining everything against your experience and your reason.
Find a study group to work with.
You and your study partners will often learn more from working together than you will by yourself. It is easier to ask questions of others than of yourself, and they will challenge you to work at thinking, whereas without them you might go too easily on yourself. 19
Find a specialized (专门化的)subject.
Everything in the world nowadays is moving to specialization. It will be very useful for your future career. 20 Better yet, it will help you live a happy life in an ever-changing world that calls upon its citizens to help guide it rather than leave it to chance.
A. Avoid easy tests, like true or false tests.
B. You should learn how to use self-doubt confidently.
C. This is the kind of learning that can lead to happiness.
D. So, learning is a teamwork art that you should keep in mind.
E. Don’t depend on others, especially teachers, to set your goals.
F. Avoid the professor who replaces entertainment with learning.
G. It will also be useful when you realize you must change careers

I once thought the cough was only a small matter so that I failed to go to see a doctor timely when I got a bad cough last week. Because of study, I was unwilling to ask for leave. However, now I am admitted to hospital.
As the saying goes, “Keeping early hours makes us healthy.” However, I usually stay up till midnight due to study, and seldom do I go to bed before 10 pm. What’s more, it is hard for me to wake up the next morning. Therefore, I often go to school without having breakfast.
