I started smoking when I was 18 and I’m not going to lie — I LOVED it! And when I got out of breath quickly, I told myself I was out of shape. I totally refused to admit that smoking was harming my body.
Then one day I woke up with really swollen (肿胀的)feet and they became more and more painful each day. Next, it was really difficult for me to even walk. I finally turned to the debtor for help. He told me that I had a disorder called Sarcoidosis (肉状瘤病).This can cause my organs to generate extreme swelling suddenly — most commonly on the lungs. I was then told that if I didn’t quit smoking immediately, I would need a lung transplant (移植)within a year.
The lung doctor gave me a list of vitamins to take. One in particular stopped me from smoking. Vitamin B3 completely stopped my desire to smoke and I was able to stop. I actually got to a point where I wanted the vitamins rather than cigarettes.
I do think it’s important to note here that I had tried to quit smoking many times before this. None of my efforts ever worked. Without this kind of vitamin, the longest time I didn’t smoke was 3 months. I have never smoked again. I have to admit that I do desire cigarettes every once in a while still. I probably always will. But it’s not hard to ignore desires now. .
If you want to quit smoking, you can also ask your doctor for this kind of vitamin. I tell you it does work.
5. When the author was out of breath, he thought that .
A. he had smoked too much
B. he had become too weak

A. smoking had harmed his health
B. air pollution had harmed his lungs
C. he had a serious disease in his feet
D. his lung transplant wasn’t very successful
8. What do we know about the author now?
A. He still smokes now and then.
B. He cannot stop taking Vitamin B3.
C. He can control his desires for smoking.
D. He is suffering extreme swelling of lungs.

The Olympic Games are held every four years. Every time the Olympic Games are held, the whole world is excited. It is one of the most exciting international events in the world. Many people are excited about the Olympic Games and consider the event very important, but do you know why they’re important? Here are some of my reasons.
They bring the world together. The Olympic Games are an international event. They bring a country great honor if its athletes win a gold medal. All countries want to take part in the Olympic Games. Even nations that are experiencing wars will send athletes to compete at the Games. I don’t think any other international event can bring so many countries together. By taking part in the Olympic Games, countries can realize that all humans live on the same planet and that they should work together for the well-being of all the people in the world.
They advance the abilities of mankind, not just the obvious abilities like strength, speed and endurance (耐力).Man has increased his ability to push the human form to his limits, breaking world records in each Olympic Games. We also work hard to improve the science of the human body and our understanding of what it can do.
The Games bring a country together. When a country has an opportunity to hold an Olympic Games, the whole country is excited. All people in the country consider it a great honor. They all feel proud of their country and are proud that they are part of the country.
My country bids for (申办)the Olympic Games on a regular basis. We’ve never won, but I know that one year we will, and I just can’t wait.
9. Paragraph 1 mainly shows that the Olympic Games are .
A. held regularly
B. an international event
C. exciting and important
D. becoming more and more popular
10. By mentioning warring nations, the author wants to show the Olympic Games .
A. can stop countries from fighting
B. bring people peace and quietness
C. are more important than any other things
D. can bring the whole world together
11. The underlined word “honor” in Paragraph 2 refers to something that .
A. is special and worldwide
B. makes people wealthy
C. makes people feel proud
D. is respectful and popular
12. What is the text mainly about?
A. Why the Olympic Games are very important.
B. Why countries want to hold the Olympic Games.
C. Why the Olympic Games make people feel excited.
D. Why the author’s country bids for the Olympic Games.
D
Most of the best kept monuments (历史遗迹)of ancient Egypt are temples. Many temples were meant to last for a million years. Therefore, ancient Egyptians built these temples out of hard stones, while they built houses, palaces and other government buildings out of bricks made of mud.
We can divide Egyptian temples into three kinds, though all of them served ancient Egyptian “Gods” in one form or another. The largest and greatest temples were those built by the Egyptian State for important national “Gods”. However, common people were usually not allowed into any of these temples. Therefore, a second type of temple, much smaller and less great, was sometimes built by common people for their own worship (礼拜)of the gods. The final kind of temple was the mortuary (停尸间)temples, built for kings, who were also considered Gods.
In ancient Egypt, temples were not built for the same reasons as we build temples and churches today. The Gods were not so much worshipped in Egypt’s ancient temples as they were taken care of by the priests (牧师).Common people were usually not allowed into most of the temples, where priests washed, clothed and sent food to the Gods.
Most of the temples of ancient Egypt were fairly similar in many ways. They often had one or more open spaces, one or more halls with upright stones supporting them, and they were often surrounded by a wall, with a large front part.
Temples were given much farmland and sometimes treasures, mostly by the king, so that the temple would have money to pay the priests and be run. Much of the time, the temples were the largest landowners in ancient Egypt.
13. According to Paragraph 1, temples in ancient Egypt were very ______
A. huge B. strong
C. useful D. common
14. What do we know about the first type of temples?
A. They were built for kings.
B. Priests were the only people allowed in.
C. They were not open to common people.
D. They served Gods differently.
15. The temples in ancient Egypt could be run mainly because .
A. they were supported by kings
B. priests were usually from rich families
C. they could sell land to common pe6ple
D. they received money from common people

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余 选项。
How to control your body language
In business discussions, non-verbal (非言语的) communication is as important as verbal communication. Studies suggest that non-verbal communication is so important that it delivers (传达)more than 55 percent of the message across, without actually using words. 16 The following tips on non-verbal communication will help you control your own body language in order to be successful in business discussions.
Be on time
Perhaps one of the worst and also the most frequent mistakes is not to take promises of time seriously. 17 Being late not only shakes your self-confidence, but also gives a poor first impression to others. Some cultures are so serious about being on time that they may even consider being late impolite. The final result is that the discussion process will suffer.
Make the old-fashioned handshake
18 It shows confidence and promotes trust among the individuals. Researchers have suggested that a handshake makes people comfortable and improves agreement. For business discussants, this promotes honesty in the communication and thus leads to successful dealings.
Know your listeners
19 Rely on your feeling and respond according to your listeners. When making a discussion, one needs to be aware of the things he must share and to whom. A successful discussant ensures that the message reaches the right listener for the most proper results.
Mind your facial expressions
Some casual (随意的)facial expressions may destroy effective communication. In some cases, showing fear or worry may also be mistaken as being unable and lack of confidence — things that must not be used in business meetings. Therefore, ensure that you have trained yourself to improve your positive expressions and hide the negative ones. 20
A. Avoid looking at someone directly for a long time.
B. You should always keep your physical actions positive.
C. Discussion is a talk between two or more people or parties.
D. Never underestimate (低估)the power of a good handshake.
E. Each time you are leaving for a business meeting, show up on time.
F. One needs to be aware of the body language of his listeners as well.
G. This means that people need to be aware of their body language while discussing.

书面表达(One possible version)
Dear Jack,
Honestly, after reading your email, I feel really sorry.
After all, we are at the age of physical growth and smoking is harmful to our body. I give you three suggestions: Firstly, find the reason why Bakery wants to smoke. Secondly, let him see the video about the harmfulness of smoking. Thirdly, ask teachers and Bakery’s parents for help if necessary. As a teenager who tries to have a healthy lifestyle, we should never get into the habit of smoking, no matter how cool it seems.
All in all, as Bakery’s friend, you should help him get away from smoking.
Yours,
Li Hua
