Edvard Munch is the creator of The Scream (《尖叫》), which is one of the most expensive paintings in the history of art. This painting has attracted many people, surprised even more, and frightened a few. How was he inspired(启发) to paint it?
One fine evening, the artist was walking through the city roads. For a second, he stopped walking and looked at the sky. All he saw was the setting sun and clouds, which appeared in blood red color. There was also a low creaking (咯吱声) sound from under the city. The whole setting made him feel like the nature was screaming for something. Then he went on to paint The Scream with blood-red clouds and screaming backgrounds. Thus, the painting was born. There are four versions of this painting and a couple of them are a part of world-famous art galleries (画廊) and others a part of someone's private collection.
A merican Gothic is one of those famous modem paintings by American artist Grant Wood. The painting shows a father, who is a farmer, and his daughter standing together in front of a house. Here is how he painted it.
On a fine August morning, another young artist took Grant for a drive around Iowa to find inspiration for his next painting. At that time, he noticed a small house built in the Gothic style. Right then, Grant drew the house on an envelope he had with him. Then Grant Wood thought about creating a painting with people who would be perfect for a house like that and went on to do so. Why do we need to save endangered species? Some people do not really understand why they should keep a healthy population of animals or plants on the planet. Here, we provide them with the reasons why this needs to be done.
Many plants can be used to make medicine. For example, the drug digitalis (毛地黄), made from purple foxglove (digitalis), has prevented the death of millions of people. Digitalis is used to treat heart failure, headache, and many other diseases. If one plant species disappears, its medical value will be gone, too. Plants are not the only source of medicine. Many animals can be used to make medicine, too. So they should be protected from dying out.
Wild species of plants can be a source of important genes to improve crops that are grown today. Some genes that scientists take from wild plants can help fight pests (害虫), diseases and drought. Climate change has made it more and more difficult to grow crops. Improving crops' genes is very important. Animals such as geckos(壁虎) and spiders are also important natural pest controllers. Geckos feed on at least five pests while spiders are known to feed on cockroaches.
The disappearance of an animal or a plant species can greatly change an ecosystem (生态系统)Just like humans, a plant or an animal could not live by itself. Removing one animal or plant species from the ecosystem will affect other animals or plants. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, one lost plant species can lead to the loss of many insects, plants and animal species found in the higher levels of the food chain.
Besides all the reasons mentioned above, there is another very important reason. We would like our children to also enjoy the benefits that could be gained from wildlife species. We shouldn't take the wild species away from them.
Now we can conclude that it's very important to protect endangered species. We should try our best to save them from dying out.
9. What does the underlined word "this" in Paragraph I refer to?
A. Planting more trees to protect the environment.
B. Controlling the number of humans on earth.
C. Keeping the balance between humans and animals.
D. Saving the endangered species on earth.
10. What does the writer want to show by mentioning geckos and spiders?
A. Animals and plants depend on each other.
B. Many animals are helpful to crops.
C. Animals cannot live without plants.
D. Many animals have useful genes.
11. What the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service shows tells us that ___________.
A. not all species are important to the ecosystem
B. plants ape the most important in the ecosystem
C. species on top of the food chain are endangered
D. saving species means protecting the whole ecosystem
12. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. No man stands alone.
B. Every action leads to a result.
C. Nothing is impossible if you try.
D. Environment is important to one's life.
D
Some people can't get enough of scary movies. They've seen scores of scary films. Why do some people enjoy watching scary movies while others can't stand them?
According to Glenn Sparks, a professor at Purdue University, one reason for the attraction is how you feel after the movie. Sparks' research found that when people watch frightening films, their heart rate, blood pressure and breath rate increase. After the film is over, this physiological (生理的) response stays. That means that any positive emotions you experience --- like having fun with friends --- become stronger. Instead of focusing on the fright you felt during the film, you remember having a great time. And you'll want to come back for more.
However, if your experience is negative (负面的), you might not. For example, let's say you were on a date that wasn't going well or you got into a car accident on your way home. Again, because your response strengthens (加强) any emotions you experience, the negative feelings might make you skip a scary movie in the future.
Some people turn to scary movies because they're novel (新奇的). All of us are likely to pay attention to novel things in our environment. Still, negative emotions can beat novelty. If we experience high levels of fright, seeing a scary movie just isn't worth it.
Research suggests that more men enjoy scary movies. This might be because men are braver and more likely to enjoy frightening things.
In one study, males like a horror movie more when they see it with a female who is frightened, and females like the movie more when they see it with a male who isn't frightened.
13. According to Glenn Sparks' research, when people are watching a frightening film, __________.
A. they think of the good experiences in the past
B. they experience too many negative emotions
C. they experience physiological response
D. they suffer from lower blood pressure
14. If you experience something bad after watching a horror movie, __________.
A. you look forward to something positive
B. you won't remember much about the movie
C. you may never want to watch such movies again
D. you are not likely to turn to novel things in our environment
15. What do people usually do in the face of a novel thing?
A. They experience high levels of fright.
B. They try to beat negative emotions.
C. They run away to avoid danger.
D. They want to have a look at it.
