Listening to music is considered a good thing for adults. Indeed it is. Scientific studies have proven it. Music has so many good effects on our body, mind and mood that this world will certainly not be a good place without music. Then, is music good for children? Some parents think so and let their children learn or listen to music. But some parents don't know the importance of music to children. Here are some reasons why music is important to children.
First, music is good for children's intelligence. Studies have proved that children who learn music are likely to have higher intelligence than those who have no. interest in or dislike music. This is because the brain gets stimulated (剌激) by the rhythm and tone of music.
Music also has soothing (抚慰的) effect on children and helps remove their stress. Today's children are under a lot of stress from schoolwork. Being under too much stress impairs children's health. Luckily, listening to music can help them feel better.
Music can improve children's moods. Some children are sad by nature. They seem to be lost in their own thoughts and don't take interest in their surroundings. In such cases, a method known as "music therapy" comes to their rescue. It changes their moods and places a new kind of spirit in them.
Music is also a universal language that children ought to learn. Our world has become a global village. People are getting more and more interested in other cultures and countries. Music can help them in understanding foreign cultures.
Now we can say that music is very important not only to adults but also to children. So children should be encouraged to learn music or listen to music.

C. accepting the fast developing world easily
D. showing greater interest in other cultures
12. What would be the best title for the passage?

After an animal throws velvet mesquite (绒毛牧豆树) seeds across the desert, the seeds don't sprout (发芽) right away. Instead, they lie there --- sometimes for decades. Once enough rain falls, the seeds will sprout. Now, they face a race against the clock. Those seeds must quickly send down deep roots before the water dries up.
Steven R. Archer studies how this works. He works at the University of Arizona in Tucson. It's in the heart of the Sonoran Desert. The Sonoran Desert doesn't get long rains. Most rain falls in short little bursts. Each might deliver just enough water to wet the top inch of soil. Archer and his team wanted to see how two' plant species respond to these rains. The experts studied velvet mesquite and acacia trees (金合欢树).
A storm that drops 2 centimeters of rain provides more than enough water for seeds of a mesquite or acacia shrub to sprout. That much rain can keep the top 2.5 centimeters of soil wet for 20 days. That period is important.
Inside a greenhouse, the scientists planted seeds of velvet mesquite and cat's claw acacia. They then soaked (浸湿 ) them with between 5.5 and 10 centimeters of water over 16 or 17 days. At the end of the experiment, the scientists measured the plants' growth. Mesquite seeds sprouted quickly. They sprouted a.ftera4.3 days, on average. Acacia seeds took 7.3 days. The mesquite also grew deeper roots. For the plants that got the most water, the mesquite roots grew to an average depth of 34.8 centimeters, compared to just 29.5 centimeters for the acacia. In both species, the roots grew longer with each more l centimeter of water the plants received. Growing a deep root very fast
helps make sure of their survival (生存).
13. After a mesquite seed falls in the desert, __________.
A. it usually sprouts within a few days
B. it dies within months without water
C. it can sprout as soon as it is planted
D. it can wait for years before getting enough rain
14. Why did Steven R. Archer and his team do the experiment?
A. To compare the growth of two plants.
B. To help plants better survive in the desert.
C. To find out the importance of water to plants.
D. To see the relation between two plants and water.
15. A mesquite or acacia shrub usually sprouts __________.
A. after 2 centimeters of rain falls
B. when it keeps raining for several days
C. when a storm drops I centimeter of rain
D. after the top inch of soil stays wet for 20 days
