The Science Communication Conference is the only place where everyone from different science communication fields and backgrounds can come together to discuss the problems that face all of them. This year, we’ll attach special importance to moving the sector (行业)forward, improving our practice, and upping our game.
We’re doing this in a number of ways. Following advice from past years, we’re hosting the conference outside of the South East, at Manchester Metropolitan University, to make sure that science communicators from across the UK have a chance to attend. Manchester’s lively culture and famous scientific history make it a great place for a conference that will have its eyes fixed on the future, by learning from the past.
The first day of the conference will cover different kinds of skills and problems, satisfying interested, experienced and expert levels. The day will round off with a workshop, and speed mentoring (职业辅导体系)session, to help delegates (代表)meet each other and get ideas for career development.
On the second day of the conference, our focus will be on science communication challenges that can only be solved by action from across the sector. As the Science Communication Conference is a good opportunity to mix the different communities within science communication, we’11 make delegates work together and come up with solutions and actions to address these big challenges, and move the sector as a whole forward.
We’ve tried to keep our ticket costs low, and have arranged low cost hotels in the local area. Our early, bird delegate rate is at a discount, and we suggest booking early to get the best deals on travel and hotels.
If you have any questions about the conference, see our FAQs, or contact scicommconf@british-scienceassociation.org.

Though Katniss Everdeen is only a teenager, she’s a tough hunter who puts food on her family’s table. Her father is dead and she lives with her mother and sister Prim in District 12 in the country of Panem. She hunts with a guy named Gale who is cute and might even love Katniss, but who knows? Katniss is not very in touch with her emotional side.
Every year the Capitol of Panem hosts an event called the Hunger Games where two “tributes (贡 品)’’ -----a boy and a girl — are selected from each of the twelve districts (辖区)to be brought to a stadium and fight until one person dies. Only one person can win. This is to remind the country not to rebel (反叛),and also for entertainment of course. This year, unfortunately, Katniss’s little sister is selected for the Hunger Games, so Katniss volunteers to take her place. Another one also selected is Peeta Mellark, the baker’s son, who maybe has a little feeling of love for Katniss.
After the getting, that’s the tribute selection process, Katniss and Peeta are taken away to the Capitol to prepare for the Games and dressed up for live TV. During the opening ceremony, Cinna and Portia dress Katniss and Peeta in flames and they draw much attention to themselves. During training, Katniss shows her archery (射箭)skills to the Game makers and scores an amazing 11 out of 12. Peeta gets a lower score and asks to be coached separately. I believe in being what I am instead of what sounds good to the rest of the world.
Last year, I left a job I hated as a programmer for a job I love as an executive assistant, which is just a good word for secretary. I still feel a little embarrassed when people ask me about my new job. Not because of what I do, but because of what some people, including myself, have thought of secretaries.
I had always thought that secretaries were nice, but not smart or strong. I have a master’s degree in English literature and co-founded a nonprofit organization. People who know me wondered why I would go for what seemed to be such a dull and low status job. Even my new boss asked if I would be bored.
Why would r want to be a secretary? Because k fits me like a glove. I get to do what I love best all day, which is to organize things. I like the challenge of holding the focus on the most important things in my boss’ wildly busy schedule. Solving finances feels like playing detectives to me. I find filing (文件归档)restful.
The only hard part is dealing with my own and other peopled firm ideas. I admit that I feel embarrassed bringing the lunch or serving coffee to my boss5 visitors. But deep down I don’t believe that serving food is shameful. Really, I think of it as a practice in humility (谦逊).
It would be easier if I were someone whose skills were more respected and better rewarded — a doctor, an architect or a scientist. I would feel cool when I meet someone at a party. A friend reminds me that you only have to talk about what you do for five minutes at parties, but you have to live what you do every day of your life, so better to do what you love and forget about how it looks. And this, I believe.
9. What job did the author dislike?
A. A programmer. B. A secretary.
C. An assistant. D. A lecturer.
10. What do people think of the job of secretary?
A. A smart and nice job.
B. A dull but well-paid job.
C. A boring and humble job.
D. An embarrassing and dull job.
11. What does “it fits me like a glove” mean?
A. She likes making plans.
B. She finds filing restful.
C. She is suited for the job perfectly.
D. She likes solving financial problems.
12. Regarding other people’s firm ideas in Paragraph 5, the author feels .
A. doubtful B. acceptable
C. restful D. shameful
D
Animals can adapt to injuries quickly and limp(跛行)away only seconds after an accident happens. Modem robots, on the other hand, can take hours, even days, to learn new moves. But now, researchers have developed an animal-inspired intelligent trial and error” process that allows robots to recover from damage in two minutes or less.
“The most exciting thing is that it’s very fast,” says lead author on the study, Jean-Baptiste Mouret, "Having a machine learn something in two minutes is very unusual in robotics.”
The robots achieved such quick recovery (恢复)because they didn’t waste time checking the damage, according to Mouret. An injured animal doesn’t check its injured ankle; it finds a limp that allows it to keep moving. Similarly, the team’s robots didn’t find the damage; they just noticed a drop in speed or a change in course, and selected a new movement to continue their actions.
That selection process takes less time thanks to what the authors call a “simulated (模仿的) childhood.” Using a computer simulation of itself, the six-legged robot created a map of every possible movement pattern it could use to walk. The robotic arm used a map of movements to drop a ball into a cup. From all of those, the robot predicted which options would work best, testing them each out when the damage happened. That way, when one step failed the damaged robot, it had far fewer options to search through to eventually find a functional walk.
Thus far, the process has only been used with robots in the lab, but the team believes it could make the real world’s robots better, faster and problem solvers. Fast-learning robots could be useful for any situation in which machines need to fun_ction for long periods of time with least control, such as natural disaster recon (侦查)and rescue —environments where rescue workers can’t afford to babysit their machines. “We want a robot that can take care of itself” says Mouret, “and won’t need to be rescued by the rescuers.”
13. The “intelligent trial and error” process is inspired by .
A. robots B. animals
C. human beings D. researchers
14. What does “the most exciting thing” refer to in Paragraph 2?
A. The robots run very fast.
B. Having a machine learn something.
C. The robots can avoid making mistakes.
D. Robots recover from damage in two minutes or less.
15. In what sense are the fast-learning robots similar to an injured animal?
A. They have an injured ankle.
B. They keep moving by limping.
C. They don’t waste time checking.
D. They find a change in the direction.

Life of Pi is about the son of a zookeeper, Pi Patel, who has the knowledge of animal behavior. When Pi is sixteen, his family emigrates from India to North America, along with their zoo animals.
The ship sinks during the voyage, and Pi finds himself alone in a lifeboat. A 450-pound Bengal tiger is his companion, whose fear, knowledge, and cunning allow him to exist for 227 days. When they finally reach the coast of Mexico, the tiger flees to the jungle beside the beach, never to be seen again.
Through these plots, I get the information that youth is full of spirit of adventure. We can overcome difficulties as long as we never lose hope. Smart people always can adapt to the changing world.
