British Science Week is entering its third decade in 2025, taking place on 7-16 March, and the theme to mark the start of this new era is “Change and adapt”!
Change and adaptation are all around us
Changing and adapting play a big part in science. You can find examples in every area of STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths). Cities, towns and other areas where people live change and adapt. Plants and animals change and adapt to their surroundings to survive.
Our behaviors change too— we need to change how we consume the world’s resources to make up for the worst effects of the climate crisis, and adapt our lifestyles to reduce our impact through recycling or reducing waste. But change and adaptation don’t just happen here on Earth, and even the stars and other heavenly bodies change as they gain and lose mass. Perhaps there is life on other planets that adapts as the environment changes.
When exploring this theme, we can also consider how attitudes to STEM and the people who do it have changed and adapted. Concepts of scientists are changing and we need to keep adapting our thinking until we can no longer picture a stereotypical (模式化的) scientist— anyone can be a scientist.
Get involved
“Change and adapt” offers a huge variety of topics to explore as part of your British Science Week 2025 activities. Why not contribute your thoughts to our discussion using the hashtag(话题标签)# BSW25

Somewhere in California, just up a hill from the beach is a high school, where students will meet before traveling to neighboring San Clement e High School on a Saturday for a 2- mile walk to raise money to build a well in a Kenyan village.
Most Kenyans live where clean water is hard to access. The good news is that water that falls in the rainy season is stored far underground, sometimes as deep as 900 feet. But bringing it to the surface can be a challenge. Sometimes, it requires heavy- duty equipment. Shallower wells are less costly but still require manpower and technology to work. A single well can supply water to an entire village, and this can be life- changing.
Weeks before the first annual Healing Hands for Water Walk Fundraiser event in 2012, students walked in the beach town and asked for donations from businesses. They covered a lot more distance than the 2 miles they would cover during the event as student organizers Branner Grimsley, Klara Gundelach and Solveig Erngren pounded on the boardwalk. “But it was worth it to make a difference by helping these people in Africa,” Grimsley said.
Standing on the boardwalk and looking out over the sand to the horizon and beyond, you can see a lifeline reaching from a few dedicated kids to a similar group of kids in an African village. The connection was hard to imagine at first but now seems so real. Students on both sides of the world walk under the same sun. On other days, they would have different places to go, but today, they walk for the same reason: to share the bond of being one human family.
In another Kenyan village, a well was completed. As the villagers excitedly operated the hand pump, the anticipation built. Within minutes, a trickle of clean water flowed, then a gush. It was a miracle in such a dry village. Buckets were filled, and children splashed water. The tears of joy flowed as easily as the well water.
24.What can we know about building wells in Kenya from paragraph 2
A.It’s costly and useless. B.It’s easy and interesting.
C.It’s difficult but worthwhile. D.It’s challenging but cheap.
25.Why does paragraph 4 mention the connection
A.To praise the event’s participants. B.To show the difficulty of the event.
C.To share the bond of the human family. D.To highlight the significance of the event.
26.What is the last paragraph mainly about
A.The excitement of building a well.
B.The requirement for completing a well.
C.The joyous sight of drawing water from a well.
D.The quality of the water from a local village’s well.
27.Which of the following may be the best title for the text
A.From the Beach to Kenya B.Students’ Walk on the Beach
C.Walking to a Neighboring School D.Kenya’s Struggle for Clean Water

A study led by UC Riverside (UCR) atmospheric scientists predicts that unchecked carbon emissions(排放物) will force tropical rains to shift northward in the coming decades, which would profoundly impact the regions near the Earth’s equator.
The northward rain shift is caused by complex atmospheric changes. These changes are driven by carbon emissions, which in turn influence the formation of tropical convergence(汇集) zones. Those zones are essentially atmospheric engines that drive about a third of the world’s rainfall, which Antony P. Thomas, a professor of climate change and sustainability at UCR reported in a paper published in the journal Nature Climate Change.
Tropical regions on either side the equator, such as central African nations, northern South America, and Pacific island states would be the most affected. Major crops in these regions include coffee, cocoa, palm oil, bananas, sugarcane, tea, mangoes, and pineapples.
Tropical rainforests can have as much as 14 feet of rain a year. “The rainfall change is enormous,” Antony said. “It’s a very heavy rainfall region. So, a small shift will cause big changes in the economy of the societies. It will affect many regions.”
Antony and his colleagues used advanced computer models to predict the atmospheric influence of carbon dioxide emissions from continued burning of fossil fuels and other sources. “This climate model included many components of the atmosphere, ocean, sea ice, and land. All these components are interacting with each other,” he said. “Basically, we try to simulate the real world. In the model, we can increase our carbon dioxide emissions from pre- industrial levels to much higher levels.”
The analysis accounted for how carbon emissions influence the amount of radiant energy at the top of atmosphere. It also considered the changes in sea ice, water vapor and cloud formation. These and other factors resulted in conditions that push the rain- forming convergence zones northward by as much as 0.2 degrees on average.
28.What may be the main cause of the rain shift
A.The rainforests. B.The Earth’s equator.
C.Carbon emissions. D.Economic growth.
29.How does Antony feel about the rain shift
A.Confused. B.Worried. C.Grateful. D.Indifferent.
30.Which word can best describe the study
A.Comprehensive. B.Widespread. C.Fruitful. D.Historic.
31.What can be inferred from the text
A.The rain shift is unrelated to human activities.
B.The rain shift threatens equatorial agriculture.
C.The study’s computer models were not precise enough.
D.The impact of the rain shift will be limited to remote areas.

Engineer Kerstin G pfrich builds machines. But rather than building metal devices, she makes tiny ones to work inside our cells. G pfrich leads a research group focusing on the “engineering of life” at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg, Germany.
Our cells are already full of nature- made machines carrying out the daily tasks of living. Many are proteins. But sometimes our natural protein- machines don’t work right. Broken biomachinery causes many diseases. So scientists are considering how they might fix faulty proteins. They might wire up artificial nerves to replace damaged ones.
And the potential for such devices goes beyond making repairs. Scientists are looking at how to give cells new abilities, hoping that by developing enough novel biomachines, they might make new forms of life. So if a protein is faulty, why not make a new one in the lab
Back when Frankie Rawson was a student, he asked his teachers that. Now a nanotechnologist at the University of Nottingham in England, Rawson has answered his own question, “It turns out that we’re not very good at artificially re- creating what bi ology does.”
Biologists like Rawson and G pfrich found a workaround. They’re creating nanomachines that do the same jobs as proteins. With the right design, these nanomachines can do so easier at less cost. They also can be more stable using fewer ingredients.
To build them, researchers work with many types of materials. Rawson uses carbon nanotubes. G pfrich even uses biological molecules, such as DNA.Rather than heal old or damaged body parts, she’d replace them with new ones.
Scientists have learned to make small synthetic (合成的) biology fixes. Our cells must work together. “Think of them like the wiring of a house,” Rawson says. Flip a switch, and a light turns on. That’s a big- scale effect. But each small piece in the system must work properly to get that end effect.
32.What does paragraph 2 intend to tell us
A.The cost of repairing proteins. B.The prospect for nature- made machines.
C.The challenge of natural protein- machines. D.The background of creating new biomachines.
33.Why is Rawson mentioned in paragraph 4
A.To present scientists’ failure in biology. B.To convey his idea of life engineering.
C.To show making proteins in the lab is hard. D.To explain why nanotechnology is important.
34.Which can best explain the underlined word “workaround” in paragraph 5
A.A new dilemma. B.A difficult condition.
C.An unbelievable story. D.An alternative solution.
35.What does the last paragraph mainly express
A.The effect of proteins on our body. B.The combination of the wiring of a house.
C.The precision required for synthetic biology. D.The complexity of the human body system.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
We all have 24 hours in a day, but why some people don’t have a problem getting it all done while others struggle to stay on top of even the basics 36
If you’re new to time management, or if you find yourself frequently overwhelmed by responsibilities, we recommend a strategy called brain uploading. Get everything that is weighing you down out of your brain and onto a master list. 37 Look through each category and pick out the things you need to prioritize.
A benefit of having a master list of responsibilities is that it allows you to say no to things that aren’t important or to find ways to give tasks to others. Go through that master list. 38 For essential tasks that cannot be handed out, carve out time for them when you’ re at your best. Identify the time you work best, and schedule your hardest tasks during that time.
39 To prevent the great pressure, we recommend integrating your to- dos into your calendar. For every to- do, ask how long this will take and when you will do it. Even if things change and you have to move things from one day to another, it gives you a complete view of everything on your plate, and nothing gets forgotten.
Scheduling leisure time can feel like a drag, but it’s an even bigger drag to find yourself missing out on leisure time because of an overpacked or disorganized schedule. 40 However, demanding jobs and responsibilities make it nearly impossible. Instead, focus on short bursts of five to twenty minutes of relaxation each day.
A.Work on those first.
B.Remove items that don’t have to be done.
C.The secret is a skill called time management.
D.People often get upset by having too much to do.
E.Divide it in a way that makes it feel more manageable.
F.Transfer it into your calendar on the day you are going to do it.
G.We think we need to carve out huge blocks of time for self- care.

“Take a seat, campers! Time for snacks and stories,” Counselor (领队) Kate announced. As ten third graders dashed toward the campfire circle, Kate turned to Quill. “I need to get more marshmallows(棉花软糖), so I’m leaving you in charge for a few minutes. Just tell them a story until I get back,” she said.
Quill agreed. But his hands started to sweat. Being a junior counselor had been pretty easy for Quill so far. He was good at caring for the younger kids. But he’d never been left alone with them before. Even worse, he was poor at telling stories.
As Quill took a seat, he felt ten pairs of eyes staring at him. Nervously, he asked, “What kind of story do you want to hear ” A camper named Caden bounced up and down on the ground, “A horror story!” Alice, another camper, asked, “Can you tell one about a sepulchral(阴森森的) house ”
As everyone began chanting, “Horror story! Horror story! Horror story!” Quill felt a tug(猛拽) on his T- shirt. It was Emma, the quietest camper in the group. “I’m afraid of that kind of stories,” she whispered, gazing at Quill with worried- looking eyes.
Uh- oh! Quill thought if he didn’t tell a horror story, everyone would be disappointed at him and at Emma. What was he going to do now After a moment, he held up his hands for keeping quiet. “OK, instead of a horror story, I’m going to tell... a toast story. I would start the beginning and you continue the story based on your own imagination,” Quill said.
Quill started, “Bob lived in a plastic bag. One day, a hand took Bob out of his bag and dropped him into a dark room. Bob heard a click(咔嗒声), and some lights came on. The air inside turned hot, and he started sweating.” Quill stopped and looked at Caden.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“It’s a group story and you’ re going to keep the story going,” Quill said to Caden. Realizing the dark room was actually a toaster(烤面包机), Alice smiled, continuing the “horror” story.

M: Hello. International Friends Club. Can I help you
W: Oh, hello. I read about your club in the paper today and I thought I’d phone to find out a bit more.
M: Yes, certainly. Well, we are a sort of social club for people from different countries. It’s quite a new club— we have about 50 members at the moment, but we are growing all the time.
W: That sounds interesting. I’m British actually, and I came to Washington about three months ago. I’m looking for ways to meet people. Er, what kinds of events do you organize
M: Well, we have social get- togethers, and sports events, and we also have language evenings.
W: Could you tell me something about the language evenings
M: Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practice their languages— you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. Monday— Spanish; Tuesday— Italian; Wednesday— German; and Friday— French. On Thursday we usually have a meal in a restaurant for anyone who wants to come.
W: Well, that sounds great. I really need to practice my French.
M: OK. Well, if you can just give me your name and address, I’ll send you the form and some more information. If you join now, you can have the first month free.

M: No, I’m fine, thanks. But there is one thing. I’d like to send an important email. It’s a file on this USB flash drive. It’s rather urgent.
W: Yes, of course. You can use my computer to send your email.
M: Thanks, that would be very nice.
W: Let me show you the way. Please follow me. Here it is. You can use this one.
M: Thank you very much.
W: Anything else Do you want something to read, The Economist or something else while you’re waiting
M: No, thanks. I’ll send this email, and then I can prepare some work while I’m waiting.
W: All right, I’ll leave you for a moment.
M: Thanks. Oh, one more thing, I need to send some flowers to my wife. Today is the fifth anniversary of our wedding.
W: Er, okay! I’ll get you some flowers and something like that from the nearby flower shop. This evening, will you need a taxi to your hotel
M: No, thank you very much. It’s only five minutes away. I’ll walk there.

M: Now let me tell you what happened to Peter’s hometown. On June 12, Peter had a surprise when he woke up in the morning. He found that the floor of his room was flooded. When he looked out of the window, he saw many cars upside down in the street. It was a sad day for Peter’s hometown, which is a mountain city. Within the twenty four hours up to noon, nearly seventeen inches of rain fell. It is one more inch than the usual rainfall of June. Roads were washed away in the peak area. Tons of mud and rocks crashed down on the houses below. Sixty four people died in the flood and more than 2,500 lost their homes. Shortly after the flood, rescue workers flew to Peter’s hometown. Tractors and lorries worked hard to clear away the mus. Many people sent money and necessities of life to the victims of the flood and helped them rebuild their hometown.

参考范文:
An Unforgettable Experience of Labour
During the National Day holiday that had just finished, I spent one day participating in a local environmental clean- up initiative.
On that day, I joined a group of volunteers to pick up litter in the wetland park. Armed with gloves and trash bags, we spent hours collecting discarded bottles, cans, and plastic waste. It was a laborious task, but the sense of purpose was inspiring. As we cleaned, we also educated visitors about the importance of environmental conservation.
The experience was not only about physical labor but also a lesson about community spirit and personal responsibility. I felt a deep sense of accomplishment, knowing that my efforts, however small, contributed to a cleaner and healthier environment.

“It’s a group story and you’ re going to keep the story going,” Quill said to Caden. Caden thought for a moment and smiled. Then he continued in a scary voice on purpose, “Bob felt himself turning brown and crispy. He was sure this was the end of his life, but then suddenly the lights switched off, and Bob shot out of the toaster. Seconds later, a giant hand grabbed him and threw him down. As Bob lay there on the plate, a long, shiny knife appeared over him...” Caden paused for moment. “Alice’s turn,” Quill seized the opportunity and said.
Realizing the dark room was actually a toaster (烤面包机), Alice smiled, continuing the “horror” story. “Something soft and tasty was placed onto Bob’s body and the knife spread it all over Bob. The action makes Bob giggle...” Everyone listened attentively. The children kept continuing stories one by one, making the plot thrilling, terrifying, funny, and even absurd. They were so absorbed in it, not noticing Kate’s returning. When the story came to a happy ending, Kate praised, “What a great story! Although we don’t have toast to eat, let’s have marshmallows together.” Hearing this, the crowd burst into laughter, and Quill had the brightest and happiest smile.
