American cyclist Lael Wilcox is claiming the record for the fastest woman to bike around the world.
The 38-year-old started her journey in Chicago on May 26 and ended it in Chicago on September 11, riding 18,125miles over the course of 108 days, 12 hours and 12 minutes. Her record has yet to be certified by Guinness World Records, but it would beat by more than two weeks the previous record of 124 days and 11 hours set by Scottish cyclist Jenny Graham in 2018.
Wilcox’s first leg of the trip was a week riding from Chicago to New York City. Then she flew to Portugal, spending a month riding east through Europe. Next it was a flight to Australia. Then she spent a week biking through New Zealand, and afterward it was back to North America. She landed in Alaska and rode from Anchorage through western Canada and down the US West Coast, before heading east through the Southwest and back to Chicago. Riding 18,125miles over 3 months means averaging over 166 miles a day. Sometimes she rode more than 200. And the world is not flat. Wilcox climbed a total of 629,880 vertical (垂直的)feet on her bike — equal to climbing the height of Mount Everest more than 21 times.
Wilcox is no stranger to long bike rides. She has been doing extreme long- distance racing since 2015, when she set the women’s record in the Tour Divide race. This time, she knew it was going to be a “pretty tiring effort”, but she could still meet people gathering along her way, offering drinks and treats.
“I’d be through a distant area like British Columbia where, you know, there’s nobody out there. I saw, like, eight bears. And then I got closer to a town, and all of a sudden people started showing up, you know — a family with two kids and another guy that brought me cookies and a nurse coming out from a clinic just to say hello. I was so grateful to have such a life experience.”
Wilcox was busy — on her bike ride. “There’s nothing else I’d rather do. I am thankful for whatever happened on the way, which is fascinating and makes my trip wonderful.”

Fantasy author George R. R. Martin has officially spent 12 years working on The Winds of Winter, the long-awaited sixth part in the series that excited the book fans. With no publishing date in sight, one tech-savvy (精通科技的) fan decided to write the story himself, or rather, he asked ChatGPT to write it for him. Surprisingly, the AI quickly produced a 683,276- word work of high quality. But this raises an important question: Can AI programs like ChatGPT really produce the kind of writing that moves us and speaks to our souls
“I think there is a misunderstanding that large language models like ChatGPT are not very good at writing in a prose (散文) style,” An author Sean Michaels tells BBC. “In fact, they can do it easily and quite well, just like all the image- generating (生成) software can do things like making photos in the styles of Wes Anderson or David Lynch.”
For his novel Do You Remember Being Born, in which a poet is approached by a tech company to co- author a collection of poems with their AI, Michaels created a special type of ChatGPT he called “Moorebot”, which through training learned to write in the style of real-world poet Marianne Moore, further making the distinction between human and machine unclear.
Although some writers oppose the rise of AI out of concern for their employability, others have put the debate in an older, broader dialogue on the meaning and purpose of art. The Oscar- winning screenwriter Charlie Kaufman has openly expressed his dislike of machine learning. Looking beyond the standard definition of creativity- creating something new and original — Kaufman describes art as any form of expression that establishes an emotional connection between people.
Even if AI were capable of writing something emotional, which Michaels claimed it can, Kaufman would refuse to recognise this as art because it cannot establish a link between reader and author. “If I read a poem,” he recently said in a statement on AI, “and that poem moves me. I am in love with the person who wrote it. I can’t be in love with a computer program. I can’t, because it isn’t anything.”

In 2020 sailors off the Iberian Peninsula began reporting that orcas (虎鲸) were “attacking” their boats. The five - ton heavy fish, capable of swimming at 48km/h— faster than most ships and boats— were approaching, investigating, and throwing itself towards the boats, frightening those on board.
Since then, over 670 interactions like this have been recorded, all by a group of about 15 orcas. About a fifth resulted in severe damage, scores of boats were disabled and six boats sunk. A group of experts rapidly gathered and in May they gave their conclusion. The orcas aren’t attacking. Instead, according to the experts, the whales may be bored and playing with the boats. Our boats may just be part of a “craze” in their culture.
Dr Patrick R Hof has handled hundreds of whales’ brains. “A human brain is about1.3kg, while an orca brain,” says Hof, “is about 5kg.” A real big one. When Hof and colleagues examined whales’ brains using a Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scanner (磁共振成像扫描器), they found that they were “highly unusual... organised in a pattern basically different from that seen in the brains of humans.” Part of the reason for that difference is because toothed whales have so many unique brain functions, from sleeping with half of their brain awake in order to avoid drowning (溺水), to finding directions and mapping their world. From a biological viewpoint, Hof thinks orca brains look capable of behaviour such as learning to play with boats.
The scientific agreement is that we shouldn’t call the interactions “attacks”. Online news reports and videos have already appeared of sailors firing guns at orcas. One group of experts issued a letter urging the media to avoid projecting stories onto the animals, as how we decipher them has a big effect on their lives— it could save them or it could drive them to extinction faster. “We should keep cool heads” and “not punish wildlife for being wild”, they wrote.
Whatever happens, perhaps we can’t ever hope to fully understand orca behaviour, because their world is water, changing, adaptable. We’re observing a society in development.
