During the slow summer season, perhaps you like to stake out a spot on a beach or lakeside, armed with an old favorite or a new curiosity, you’re expected to reach for our to-read lists and consider these recommendations from Harvard Library staffers.
(Titles available through Hollis contain links.)
Full Tilt: Ireland to India with a Bicycle by Dervla Murphy
Irish writer Dervla Murphy traveled alone to many non-Western countries, almost always by bicycle. She lived willingly with hardship and privation: intense cold and heat; fleas; unreliable food supplies; poor road conditions or no roads; no doctors, no laundromats, and no bike mechanics. In “Full Tilt” and other books, she look me to places I’ll never visit and shared experiences I’ll never have, as many great books do.
— June Rutkowski, Harvard Library Information and Technical Services
Ensihy Slip Into Another World: A Life in Music by Henry Threadgill and Brent Hayes Edwards
The autobiography of the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and avant-garde jazz saxophonist and flutist Henry Threadgill is an extremely readable and hard-to-put-down memoir (回忆录). As expected, one learns of the many influences that led to Threadgill’s unique and instantly recognizable music. What makes this memoir unique from other autobiographies of jazz musicians are the nearly 100 pages devoted to Throadgill’s experiences as a Black infantryman in the Vietnam War; these memories are raw and vividly told.
Ed Copenhagen, reference archivist
Listen for the Lie by Amy Tintera
I don’t normally read murder mystery novels, but this was chosen by my book club and I was hooked from beginning to end! The sarcastic humor of the main character lightens the tone and prevents the story from getting too dark. I read this book but others who listened to the audiobook said it was really well done.
Hannah Hack, administrative coordinator at Harvard University Archive
Nine Lives: Mystery, Magic, Death, and Life in New Orleans by DanBaum

Each person documented shows a different aspect of New Orleans culture and how resilient people and communities can be.

Growing up in a village in eastern Nepal’s Bhojpur Mountains, Mira Rai had dreams far beyond the conventional expectations for Nepali women. The eldest daughter of five children, she was expected to fetch water, tend crops and livestock, and help out at home. By age 12, she stopped attending school regularly, and instead hauled heavy bags of rice up and down steep trails — often barefoot — to trade at the market. It was hard work-but great training for a future trail runner.
“As a girl,” Rai recalls, “I would constantly be told to know my place, suppress my voice, and act in a certain manner. For me, breaking free from these traditions itself was a big dream.”
Several years ago, Rai’s dream became reality during a run outside Kathmandu when two male trail runners invited her to enter her first trail race, the Kathmandu West Valley Rim 50K. With no prior experience, no special gear, or training and as the only woman in the competition, she astonishingly beat everyone-even the men. From there, a community of supporters came to give her a chance to compete in international trail running competitions.
Today, the running world recognizes Rai as a high-elevation trail racing phenomenon. Now she has made it a mission to empower both women and men of Nepal through sports. “We have realized that Nepal has tremendous potential to develop competitive athletes,” she says.
“It’s hard to find good role models for young women in our region, especially one coming from the same rural village background as most of the young generation,” says Wasfia Nazreen, a mountain climber from Bangladesh (a country bordered with India). Mira is blazing a trail, not just in terms of being able to speak nationally on gender equality, but by getting young people into running through the new Kathmandu Trail Race Series. “The grit (勇气) and joy she embodies throughout all her hardships and victories is an inspiration to all of us!”
Rai, however, remains humble. “I have been ‘able to do the things I did because so many people believed in me and took chances, and I want to give back so others can have a chance just the way I did,” she says.
4. What does Mira Rai’s experience suggest about gender roles in her community
A. They are strictly enforced, with no room for change.
B. They can be overcome with determination and support.
C. They have little influence on the lives of women in Nepal.
D. They are universally accepted and unchallenged.
5. Why did the author decide to include a quote from Wasfia Nazreen in the text
A. To show that Mira Rai’s influence extends beyond Nepal.
B. To highlight the struggles of female mountain climbers in Bangladesh.
C. To contrast Mira Rai’s achievements with those of other athletes.
D. To suggest that trail running is more popular in Bangladesh than in Nepal.
6. What does the underlined word “phenomenon” most closely mean
A. An ordinary and hardworking athlete. B. A debatable and influential figure.
C. An inexperienced but lucky athlete. D. An unusual or outstanding person.
7. What central idea does the author express in Mira Rai’s story
A. The importance of sticking to traditional roles in Nepali society.
B. The significance of physical training from a young age for athletic success.
C. The influence of breaking societal expectations and inspiring ohange.
D. The need for better resources in rural Nepali villages.

Space Day of China falls on April 24 every year, during which the country celebrates its achievements and developments in space exploration. One of the most notable accomplishments is the country’s manned space missions.
Ever since Yang Liwei made it to space in 2003, as many as 20 Chinese astronauts, including a civilian, have traveled to space. Alongside having to endure the physical impact of the weightless environment of space, there is also the mental impact of isolation and confinement that comes from living in a small spacecraft for months. What’s more, potential emergencies during missions test astronauts’ knowledge and problem-solving abilities in high-pressure environments. So it’s no wonder that astronauts have to meet extremely high standards and go through a tough training program.
To make sure that Chinese astronauts complete their missions and return to Earth safely, eight types, including over 200 subjects of training, are set. Huang Weifen, chief designer of the astronaut system for China’s manned space project, told CCTV News. Apart from physical fitness training, it also encompasses basic scientific theories, psychological health, and mock(模拟)missions. Each astronaut receives training for at least three and a half years before having the chance to go to space.
Of all the training subjects, none is more physically demanding than underwater training. It is designed to help astronauts adapt to the micro-gravity environment in space. According to Huang, astronauts stay underwater in suits weighing over 100 kilograms for six hours at a time: The combined challenge of water resistance and wearing a heavy suit make every move exhausting. “Nie Haisheng (one of the astronauts) once reported a two-kilogram loss in weight after one underwater training exercise,” said Huang.
Since the third-generation astronaut selection process began in 2018, civilians with expertise in aeronautics have also been invited to apply, as they can contribute to space missions as payload specialists. In May 2023,Professor Gui Haichao became the first civilian to travel to space, participating in the Shenzhou XVI mission. While the physiological standards for civilian astronauts are slightly more relaxed, their expertise and scientific knowledge requirements are higher, as noted by Yang Liwei, a chief planner of China’s manned space program.
8. What does the second paragraph mainly discuss
A. The historical milestones of China’s space missions.
B. The physical and mental challenges astronauts face in space.
C. The equipment used by Chinese astronauts during space missions.
D. The training programs required for becoming an astronaut.
9. Why is Nie Haisheng mentioned in the fourth paragraph
A. to highlight the physical demands of underwater training.
B. to illustrate the challenges faced during space missions.
C. to explain the importance of weight management for astronauts.
D. to show the diversity of training exercises astronauts undergo.
10. How important is Gil Flaichao’s involvement in the Shenzhou XVI mission
A. He led the training program for ‘China’s manned space missions.
B. He conducted the experiment in space as an astronaut.
C. He helped improve the physiological standards for astronauts.
D. He is the first civilian astronaut to empower China’s space mission.
11. What is the best title of the passage
A. China’s Journey to the Stars
B. The Development of Chinese Space Missions
C. Hard Training Pays Off
D. The Challenges and Victories of Chinese Astronauts
D
The robots are coming! In science fiction, this phrase often signals danger, but in reality, it’s a welcome prediction. The field of robotics has made significant progress in the past year as researchers in universities and industry have applied advances in artificial intelligence (AI) to machines. The same technology that powers chatbots like ChatGPT and systems like DALL-E to create images from text is now giving robots a major cognitive upgrade.
As a result, robots are becoming more capable, easier to program, and able to explain their actions. Investors are flocking to robotics startups, and even OpenAI, which had previously stepped away from robotics, is reentering the field with a new team. When AI is applied to the physical world, its potential becomes significant.
While robots can inspire fear, partly due to Hollywood’s portrayal of them as uncontrollable creations, they also pose the risk of displacing decent-paying jobs in factories and warehouses. However, the latest advances in robotics offer substantial benefits. For example, new “multimodal“ AI models combine language understanding and vision with data from robotic sensors, allowing robots to follow commands like “pick up the yellow fruit” by recognizing objects such as a banana. These models also enable robots to explain their reasoning, making programming and debugging simpler and reducing errors because their understanding is grounded in real-world observations.
Additionally, robots are improving in their ability to learn quickly through imitation and to generalize skills from one task to another. This opens the door for robots to move out of factories and warehouses and into everyday environments. As labor markets in advanced economies tighten due to aging populations, the need for more automation becomes critical. More capable robots could help boost productivity, assist with household ohores, and provide care for the elderly and those in need.
Advanced economies will require more automation to maintain their standards of living. Countries like South Korea, Japan, and China, which lead in robot-to-worker ratios, are also aging rapidly. Without robots, more people may need to work longer and retire later. In the coming years, societal attitudes could shift from fearing the arrival of robots to eagerly expecting their presence.
12. Why are investors increasingly interested in robotics
A. Robotics has become more affordable.
B. The entertainment industry has supported robotics.
C. The fear of robots displacing jobs has eased.
D. Al advancements have advanced robot abilities.
13. What is a key benefit of ”multimodal“ AI models for robots
A. Understanding human emotions. B. Reducing production costs.
C. Improving real-world interaction. D. Competing with human workers.
14. How might societal views on robots change
A. From job loss concern to economic necessity.
B. From fear to equal partnership.
C. From viewing robots as a threat to seeing them as tools.
D. From ethical(伦理的)concerns to acceptance.
15. What’s the main purpose of the passage
A. To compare robots’ fictional dangers with their real benefits.
B To explain AI’s influence on robotics and future potential.
C. To examine robots’ job displacement and labor market effects.
D. To predict robots’ effects on daily life in the near future.

I was standing with Dad in Grandpa’s yard, and this was our last visit here, because Grandpa was moving in with us. We would have one week to get his house cleared out.
We stepped into the house, overwhelmed with the huge piles of papers on the table. I volunteered that I could take the old heavy shredder (碎纸机) from our house to deal with them. I could take it apart and put it back together. “What No!” Dad snapped (厉声说). Then he sighed, and I knew the exact three words he was going to say next. “Michael, be realistic.” Then he lectured about how unrealistic my idea was as his eyes traveled wearily (疲倦地) over the papers piled on the table.
I shrugged (耸肩),walked over and poked through the piles. “Hey, what’s this ” I pulled out an old photograph of my dad as a kid. He was standing under the apple tree in the yard, spraying (喷) water from a water pipe at whoever was holding the camera, with a big, playful smile on his face. He looked like a different person.
I glanced over at him. He was examining an old income tax statement with a frown (皱眉). I wondered if something strange had happened to him. Like maybe the carefree boy in the picture and some bookish boy down the street had decided to switch lives or something. If only there were a time capsule or a memory box that held more of Dad’s boyhood stuff. Okay, no. That was not realistic.
“Michael,” Dad said. “Why don’t you start cleaning out the shed (棚屋) ”I happily agreed.
But when I went in, I was shocked. How was I supposed to “clean it out” It was filled with junk, a broken lawnmower here and a million cans of old paint there. Suddenly I noticed a little triangle of plastic sticking out from the bottom of the paint cans. Curious, I pulled it out carefully. It was a sandwich bag with a piece of folded paper inside. Maybe it was a treasure map, or the answer to some long-unsolved murder. I chuckled(轻声地笑)over my own unrealistic fancies.
注意:1.续写词数应为150词左右;
2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。

【答案】A possible sample 1
Paragraph 1: It turned out to be a letter addressed to future people from my dad as a kid. As I unfolded the fragile paper, I saw the messy handwriting of a child. The letter began, “To whoever finds this, I hope you love this place as much as I do. My name is Tom, and this is my grandpa’s house. I love playing under the apple tree and building forts in the shed. If you’re reading this, I hope you’re having fun too. I bet you never knew how fast you could run in this yard!” I smiled, imagining my dad as a young boy, carefree and full of energy, scribbling down these words in a moment of joy. The letter ended with, “Take care of this house. It’s full of secrets and memories. And remember to keep smiling, just like I did.”
Paragraph 2: Amazed by the letter, I raced to Dad in the house. Holding the yellowed paper carefully, I burst into the room where Dad was still sorting through piles of documents. “Dad, you have to see this!” I exclaimed, handing him the letter. He looked at me with a mix of curiosity and surprise, then unfolded the note. As he read it, I watched his expression change. The frown on his face softened, and a faint smile appeared. For a moment, he seemed to be transported back to his childhood, reconnecting with the boy he once was. “I can’t believe I wrote this,” he murmured, more to himself than to me. Then, with a new lightness in his voice, he said, “You know, Michael, maybe we should take a break and go sit under that apple tree.” And just like that, the distant, serious man I knew felt a little closer, a little more like the boy in the photograph.

Paragraph 1: It turned out to be a letter addressed to future people from my dad as a kid. Dad told the future people that they had no flying cars nor household robots, so they had to do everything themselves. I grinned as I scanned through the funny letter. My jaw almost dropped when he said he dreamed of a vacation on Mars. That was not realistic at all, boy, I laughed to myself, eyes still fixed on the letter. “I made you a time capsule. Tell your robot to dig under the apple tree in the yard.” He told the future people at the end of the letter.
Paragraph 2: Amazed by the letter, I raced to Dad in the house. The poor man was still occupied with sorting out Grandpa’s papers. I dropped the letter on the table and joked, “Why don’t you just have your robot go through the papers And how could people vacation on Mars That was unrealistic. I mean...” I was laughing so hard that I could barely talk. Dad looked utterly bewildered (困惑不解的).Then he read the letter, shook his head in disbelief and finally burst out laughing. “Come on, let’s dig out the time capsule under the tree.” He strode (大步走) out to the yard. Suddenly I saw it! The boy with the water pipe.

Paragraph 1: It turned out to be a letter addressed to future people from my dad as a kid. The handwriting was shaky, with misspelled words here and there, but the message was clear. “Dear Future Me,” it began, “I hope you still like climbing trees and playing in the rain. I bet you’re still having fun with your friends and building cool stuff. Maybe you even have a spaceship by now! Don’t ever stop dreaming big, okay The world is full of adventures waiting for you.” As I read the letter, I could almost hear my dad’s younger voice, full of hope and excitement for the future. It was a far cry from the serious, practical man who stood frowning over the tax forms in the other room. I couldn’t help but smile at the thought of Dad as a kid, filled with so much wonder and imagination.
Paragraph 2: Amazed by the letter, I raced to Dad in the house. “Dad, you have to see this!” I called out excitedly. He looked up from the pile of papers, a bit annoyed at first, but when he saw what I was holding, his expression softened. He took the letter from me, and as he read it, a slow smile spread across his face. “I can’t believe I wrote this,” he murmured, almost to himself. For a moment, he seemed lost in thought, his mind clearly drifting back to his childhood. Then he looked at me, his eyes filled with a warmth I hadn’t seen in a long time. “You know, Michael,” he said, “maybe we should keep that old shredder after all. It might just come in handy for more than paperwork.” We both laughed, and in that moment, I felt closer to him than I had in years.
