A few days ago, my husband, Russ, and I lost our house of 28 years to a California wild fire. On
that night, we had to leave our house and sleep in the back seat of our Ford. The next morning, we
had to drive three and a half hours to find a hotel that had a room available. Only later, in the local
newspaper, did we see photographs of the destruction. Our house had been consumed by the fire
along with most of our neighborhood.
“How are we going to rebuild our house after this ” I thought, rounding a corner on the
sidewalk on my walk back to the hotel. “Is it even possible ”
I noticed something up ahead---a pair of nickels, shining like precious jewels. They were just
nickels, but they somehow felt special. I bent down and picked them up. If these were lucky coins, I
could use all the luck I could get.
A few days later, I made a trip to the store to buy essentials. The enormous task of replacing
everything we’d lost put a heavy weight on me. I was about to leave when I felt the urge to stop and
turn my head to the right. I could hardly believe it---there on a shelf, was a nickel! “Okay, maybe this
is more than luck,” I thought and put the nickel in my pocket.
I told myself that I had found the nickels just by chance. Then I found one next to my plate at a
restaurant---on Thanksgiving, when I was missing our house more than ever. It seemed that a nickel
appeared whenever my spirits sank.
第 3 页 共 10 页
Whenever I reached my breaking point, I’d find another nickel. In the grass, at the park, or near
the tire of my car in a parking lot. Once, my change for a quick lunch was given entirely in nickels.
“I’m sorry,” the cashier said. “It’s all we have.” “It’s all I need!” I said.
One day, I was sitting at the desk when my phone rang. It was a real-estate agent I’d been
working with. “I have a new listing,” she said. “When can we see it ”
A few hours later, Russ and I were following the agent down the driveway toward the house. I
didn’t think long. Because there, in the driveway...

Horror movies are designed to cause seemingly bad emotions---shock, fear and disgust(厌恶).
Yet many people want to sit through those films. Why Clasen, who directs the Recreational Fear
Lab at Aarhus University in Denmark, made a survey of more than 250 American horror fans with
his team, and the responses of those participants revealed three types of fans.
The first type felt great and were in high spirits. The second type reported some negative
reactions to scary movies, and some even had nightmares at first, but they explained that they were
feeling like they learned something about themselves at last. The third type of fans seemed to use
horror to deal with bad feelings and events in real life. They supported statements such as “Watching
horror movies makes me realize that everything in my own life is OK.”
According to previous studies, thrill seekers, who often seek out new and intense experiences,
tend to be horror fans. Men also seemed to be slightly bigger horror fans than women. Clasen’s
teammates didn’t think so. “They are stereotypes(老套),” they said. Men are less likely to admit in
surveys that they are afraid of horror. Likewise, researchers think it’s unfair to paint all horror fans as
thrill seekers. What may influence how much people like horror is something called the need for
第 4 页 共 10 页
affections(情感). “People differ on that---how much emotion they want in their lives,” Clasen
explained.
After watching a horror movie, you could be left unsettled and anxious, or you have nightmares,
but it may actually help you become more prepared in real life. Horror fans reported lower levels of
distress(忧虑) during the pandemic, for instance. “That’s because horror movies let people practise
negative emotions in a safe setting,” Clasen said. “That way, when it comes to scary situations in real
life, you know how to react quickly and correctly.”
Good or not, scary movies aren’t for everyone. And that’s OK. “Monster movies are good,”
sociologist Margee Kerr said, “because you know that they’re not real. ” “If you are not ready to
watch a horror movie, there are other ways to test yourself. One is writing your own horror movie
story. If you are writing a story about something that you are afraid of, you are taking control of it,”
she explained. “That can be really helpful.”
28. How did the second type of horror fans respond after watching horror movies
A. The movies made them feel worried about their real life for some time.
B. The movies stopped the fans from having unpleasant dreams.
C. The fans could have a better understanding of themselves.
D. The fans felt fantastic and were in high spirits.
29. What do the researchers mainly want to express in paragraph 3
A. The reason why people need affections.
B. The reason why people love horror.
C. The concept of thrill seekers.
D. The features of horror fans.
30. Why is the pandemic mentioned in paragraph 4
A. Horror moves can help people deal with scary situations quickly and correctly.
B. Horror movies can make people have a false judgement about scary situations.
C. Horror movies can help people get rid of negative emotions in real life.
D. Horror movies can make people unsettled and anxious in real life.
31. How can creating a horror story affect people
A. They can bring their sense of excitement under control.
B. They can bring their sense of fear under control.
C. They can take control of their sense of sadness.
D. They can take control of their sense of pride.

On Saturday, Britain will witness its first coronation(加冕礼) in 70 years, as Charles III is
crowned king in a Christian ceremony that is carefully prepared and organized, which has more than
a thousand years of history. The coronation, which is the religious confirmation of his accession(就
职) after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, last September, is the first of a British king
since 1937.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called the event “a moment of enormous national pride” and “a
show of our country’s character.”
However, not everyone is in a celebratory mood. Republican opponents who want an elected
head of state plan to protest on the day with signs declaring “not my king.” Anti-monarchist(反君主
第 5 页 共 10 页
制者) activist group Republic plans to hold a demonstration a short walk from where the king is
due to be crowned, though they received letters from the Home Office warning them about new
powers handed to police to deal with public demonstrations.
“Republic will not give in, and we will be protesting on Trafalgar Square and along the route of
the coronation procession on Saturday,” the group’s chief executive, Graham Smith, told The
Guardian.
The annual British Attitudes Survey also uncovered a change in attitudes towards the royals. Of
the respondents, 29 percent said the monarchy was “very important,” 26 percent thought it was
“quite important,” 20 percent said it was “not very important,” and 25 percent said it was “not at all
important.” The number of people who said that the monarchy is “very important” has never been
lower since data collection began in 1983. There was also a clear difference in attitudes between
older and younger generations. Just 12 percent of 18 to 34 year olds view the monarchy as “very
important,” compared to 42 percent of the 55+age group.
Australia, Belize, and Jamaica are already indicating moves towards becoming republics while
Charles is also facing calls to apologize for his ancestors’ involvement in colonialism(殖民主义) and
the slave trade.
32. How do Republican opponents respond to the Home Office’s warning
A. They will change their route.
B. They will give up the protest.
C. They will still carry out their plan.
D. They will negotiate with the police.
33. What does the underlined word “demonstration” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Public hearing. B. Public security. C. Public service. D. Public march.
34. What is the fifth paragraph mainly about
A. People' s different views on the value and function of the monarchy.
B. The purpose of the collection of data about the royal family.
C. The reason why older generations prefer the monarchy.
D. People' s different understanding of the royal family.
35. Which is a suitable title for the news report
A. Moment of enormous national pride for UK
B. The coronation一 religious confirmation of Charles’ accession
C. Charles faces calls to apologize for his ancestors' colonialism
D. Doubts remain for monarchy as UK holds first coronation in 70 years

How are things going with you these days We all miss you after you left us. I write this email
to ask you for some advice. My parents and I have a disagreement on the career that I will go in for in
the future. I wish to become a wildlife photographer, for my hobby is photographing and 1 take so
much interest in wildlife. One advantage of the career is that I can have a chance to watch as many
wild animals and plants as possible. Another advantage is that through my photos I can make more
people understand and appreciate wildlife, which can arouse their enthusiasm to protect them.
However, the reasons why my parents are opposed to the career are that it is a dangerous job and
may not guarantee a good and secure life.Would you please tell me how to convince my parents to
respect my ideal
Yours,
Li Hua
