A woman who lost one leg to cancer is seeking to break a world record by completing 102 marathon-length runs in 102 days.
Jacky Hunt-Broersma, who lost the bottom half of her left leg to a rare form of cancer in 2001, set her goal in mid-January. And every day since then, she has been running the distance of a marathon ( 马 拉 松 ). “Part of my body was gone. For me the most difficult problem was accepting my disability,” she told the reporter.
Until five years ago, she was not very active. But then she looked into running and decided to give it a try. The sport ended up being quite costly. Currently, the carbon fiber blade (碳纤维叶片) she uses, which is designed specifically for running, costs about $10,000. “Running really changed my life,” she said. “It helped me accept myself as a person with disability. It gave me a sense of freedom. I fell in love with the process of pushing my body further just to see what I could do.”
However, she has faced both physical and mental difficulties during her record-breaking attempt. On one recent day, Hunt-Broersma felt breakdown at 24 kilometers and began to cry. In that moment, she felt like her planned goal might not happen at all. By dividing it into little goals, she finally picked herself up and carried on.
Hunt-Broersma’s main support team is her husband and their two young children. She is posting her progress online and has also got a large social media following.
As she nears the end of her goal, Hunt-Broersma is hoping to inspire a single thought in others: You’re stronger than you think and you’re capable of so much more.

No matter where you go in the world, you will notice something unusual about the trees --- their trunks (树干) are painted white.
People whitewash trees for a variety of reasons, depending on the area they live in. In Mexico, the purpose of whitewashing is to protect the tree and fight against a specific type of ant. Greece is another country where you can find trees painted white. According to tradition, during Easter, everything gets whitewashed. Make sure to plan your next trip to Greece if you won’t want to miss this interesting and unique tradition.
Generally speaking, the main purpose of whitewashing is to protect the tree from heat and insects (昆虫). And few are as effective and accessible as whitewashing. When the tree is exposed to too much sun in the daytime, the tree cells become more active; however, the roots as well as the other unexposed areas of the tree remain inactive. If the water that the tree needs cannot be provided from the roots, the tree will have a dry surface. Once you whitewash them, the surfaces of young trees won’t get dry easily. If the tree is suffering from being sunburned, the wound can also allow the insects to enter the inside of the tree. Moreover, relative diseases can influence how the tree grows. Whitewash prevents any access to the inside of the tree.
Pure white paint works efficiently when it comes to reflecting both heat and sunlight away from the tree. White paint allows the tree to spend more time taking in carbon dioxide (CO2). The more carbon dioxide the trees take in, the more energy they create. Gardeners whitewash trees not only for protecting their trees but also helping produce more fruit.
Painting the trees white won’t stop traffic accidents, but it can make them less frequent, because drivers can see the trees much more clearly, even during the night.
28. Why do people in Greece paint the trees white
A. To see the trees more clearly. B. To protect the trees from ants.
C. To make their cities beautiful. D. To celebrate a traditional festival.
29. How can whitewashing protect trees from insects
A. By influencing the growth of trees. B. By helping supply water to trees.
C. By preventing access into trees. D. By drying the surface of trees.
30. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs
A. Whitewashing trees may increase fruit production.
B. Painting trees white helps stop traffic accidents.
C. White paint provides more energy for trees.
D. White paint helps trees create more CO2.
31. Where is the text probably taken from
A. A health report. B. A travel handbook.
C. A scientific magazine. D. A product advertisement.
D
For centuries, humans have explored the Earth’s mountains, jungles and deserts. But despite covering over 70% of the Earth’s surface, the ocean is still relatively a mystery. In fact, we know more about the surface of Mars than we learn about the sea floor. However, getting a fuller picture of the ocean would enable us to navigate ships more safely, create more accurate climate models, build offshore wind farms and protect ocean species—all part of what’s known as the “blue economy”.
Underwater robotic vehicles equipped with sensors are helping gather that data more quickly and more cheaply than ever before. But many of these vehicles rely on batteries with a limited lifespan, and need to return to a boat or the shore to recharge, making it difficult for them to map remoter parts of the sea.
A company called Seatrec is rising to the challenge, founded by oceanographer Yi Chao. While working at NASA, he developed a way to power ocean robots by making use of the naturally occurring temperature disparity of the sea. The power module can be installed on Seatrec’s own floating device. As the float moves between colder and warmer parts of the ocean, the material inside the power module either melts or becomes solid, causing pressure that in turn creates energy and powers the robot’s generator. “The ocean robots can get charged by the sea, so they can extend their lifetime almost indefinitely,” Chao said.
The power module can be placed in existing data-gathering robots. The robot dives a kilometer down to examine the chemistry and the shape of the seabed, using sonar (声呐)to create a map of the surrounding area. The robot returns to the surface to send back its findings by means of satellite.
The technology can extend the reach of data-gathering devices, according to Jamie Phillips, director of the GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project. “One of the huge challenges we have is simply physics: unlike mapping the Earth’s surface where we can use cameras or satellites. At sea, the light can’t go through the water column. So we’re much limited to using sonar systems. Therefore, this technology can help deal with the problem well,” said Jamie.
32. What does Paragraph 1 tell us about ocean exploration
A. It is challenging but significant.
B. It may do harm to ocean creatures.
C. It can be as difficult as space exploration.
D. It mainly focuses on mapping the seabed.
33. What’s the problem with underwater robotic vehicles
A. They fail to gather data rapidly.
B. They lack the stable power supply.
C. They can only map shallow waters.
D. They work poorly with advanced sensors.
34. What does the underlined word “disparity” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Range. B. Control. C. Record. D. Difference.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Aims of the Seabed 2030 Project
B. New power modules for ocean robots
C. The “blue economy” project of Seatrec
D. The future of data-gathering ocean robots

Camping is a great way to enjoy nature. You can breathe fresh air, cook over a campfire and sleep under the stars. However, camping also means dealing with bugs, bad weather and few, if any, toilets. 36 But there is a way to enjoy the natural world without giving up the comforts at home. It’s called glamping, and interest in it has been growing since 2007!
Glamping, a combination of the words glamorous (有魅力的) and camping, is a fairly new word. 37 Since around 600 B.C. Nomadic Mongolians have enjoyed the benefits of glamping. Their tents were so comfortable that they inspired the design of modern glamping tents!
There are many reasons why you should consider glamping for your next vacation. One of them is that glamping gives you access to some wonderful places. 38 Nowadays, glamping can be less expensive than staying in a hotel. But you can still enjoy the modern comforts of a hotel! 39 Glampsites often make generous use of eco-friendly materials and avoid using much plastic. So, there is less waste, and the area stays beautiful.
No matter what kind of experience you’re looking for, a glampsite exists for you. From Three Camel Lodge in Mongolia to Clayoquot Wilderness Resort in Canada, adventure is waiting for you. Sites can include a spa, a swimming pool and dinner under the stars. Activities can include exploring on horseback or camel and sightings of elephants, mountain sheep or tigers. 40
A. You don’t have to give up beauty for comfort!
B. These are all the benefits and problems camping can bring.
C. These troubles can discourage people from ever trying camping.
D. But it describes an activity that people have been doing for ages.
E. Another reason to go glamping is that it’s good for the environment.
F. A wide variety of glamping experiences are available all over the world.
G. You can also lend a hand with protecting the environments of these places.

And besides, he told himself, he would just do his homework on the bus ride the next morning, so maybe it didn't even matter.
A few days later it happened again. When Mom asked about his homework, he pulled out his math worksheet but left the rest in his backpack. So easy! Before long, though, his backpack was growing heavy with unfinished homework. The problem was, as the backpack got heavier, so did his heart.
Jay feared seeing the look on his parents' faces when they found out. Walking in the door, he dropped his heavy backpack and walked into the kitchen."Hi, Mom," he said. She hugged him and stood back."Jay, I got an email from your teacher today. She said you lied about your homework. We need to talk."
注意:
1.续写词数应为100左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Dear Mary,
I’m sorry to hear that you are having trouble making new friends in your new school. There is no need to be anxious about making new friends, because many teenagers find they meet the same situation when in a new environment. The problem is easy to solve, if you take my advice.
First of all, communicate with your classmates more often as it may help you develop a close relationship with them. Besides, why not join in activities and discussions held in your class If you do this, you can make friends easily. Last but not least, it is a good idea to help others whenever possible.
Hope my advice will be of great help to you.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
One Possible version:
Jay sat at the table and buried his head in his arms. So ashamed was he that he wasn't able to utter a single word."Mom must be disappointed." he was lost in thought. However, to his great surprise, his mom didn't blame him too much."If you have any problem, you can tell us directly. Remember telling lies is not a good way." she said softly, patting him on the shoulder gently. Hearing what she said, Jay raised his head and began to describe the difficulties in math in detail. Eventually, with the help of his mom, Jay made up for the homework that he left behind. It was from that day on that he never lied because he knew honesty is the best policy.
