Auggie’s Story
Sleep
I’d been reading for over an hour and sleep still didn’t come. It was almost two a. m. Everyone else was asleep. I had my flashlight (手电筒) on under the sleeping bag. Maybe the light was why I couldn’t sleep, but I was too afraid to turn it off. What had happened kept coming back to my mind.
When we got back to the camp, no one noticed we’d been gone. The teachers and all the other kids were still watching the movie. They didn’t know how something bad had just happened to me and Jack. It’s so strange how that can be, how you could have a night that’s the worst in your life, but to everybody else it’s just a usual night.
Amos, Miles and Henry brought us back to our seats. Then they returned to their own seats. In a way, everything was exactly as we had left it. The sky was the same. The movie was the same. Everyone’s faces were the same. Mine was the same.
But something was different. Something had changed.
Home
“So, do you want to hear about the bad part or the good part first ” I asked Mum.
“Whatever you want to talk about,” she answered.
“Well, except for last night, I had a fantastic time,” I said. “I feel like they ruined (毁坏) the whole trip for me.”
“No, sweetie. Don’t let them do that to you. You were there for more than forty-eight hours, and that awful part lasted one hour. Don’t let them take that away from you, okay ”
“I know.” I nodded. “But do I always have to worry about bad guys like that Like when I grow up, is it always going to be like this ”
“There are always going to be bad guys in the world, Auggie,” she said, looking at me. “But I really believe there are more good people on this earth than bad people, and the good people watch out for each other and take care of each other. Just like Jack was there for you. And Amos. And those other kids.”
“Oh yeah, Miles and Henry,” I answered. “They were amazing, too. It’s very strange because Miles and Henry haven’t even really been very nice to me at all during the year.”
“Sometimes people surprise us,” she said, rubbing the top of my head.

Alex set his lunch tray on the table near his friend Leo. “Trade you some fries for some pretzels” Alex said.
“Deal,” said Leo, taking his bag of pretzels out of bis lunchbox.
Alex noticed a folded piece of paper at the bottom of Leo’s lunchbox.
“What’s that ” asked Daniel, another boy in their class.
Before Leo could answer, Daniel grabbed the paper. He unfolded it and read in a loud voice: “Dear Leo, I hope you have a great day. Love. Mom.”
Daniel snorted. “Your mom puts notes in your lunchbox ”
“Yes,” Leo said.
Daniel read the note again, to himself. It almost looked as if he wanted to keep it.
“Give it back to Leo,” said Alex.
“Well, who wants a note anyway ” Daniel said.
“I do,” said Leo.
Alex liked getting notes too.
Daniel tossed the note and it fell to the floor.
Alex picked it up. He handed it back to Leo, who put it into his pocket.

Mateo shook his head. “How would Daniel like it if people picked on him for getting a note ”
“Daniel never gets notes,” Alex said. Suddenly, he had an idea. “That’s it! I know how to help Leo and Daniel.”
Alex explained his idea to Mateo. Mateo agreed to help, and they worked on the plan all afternoon.
At lunchtime the next day, Alex hurried to the cafeteria. He set out 23 folded pieces of paper on a table by the entrance. Each piece of paper had the name of a classmate on it.
“What are these ” asked Mira.
“We all have notes,” said Sabrina.
Alex watched as Daniel picked up the note with his name on it. Alex knew that the note said Daniel, ▲ Have a great day.

(2024·江苏常州·中考统考真题B篇)Genevieve Moss has serious hearing loss. Her world has always been silent. Alone in a town in England, she often felt lonely.
Then one day in April in 2021, something stopped Moss as she read the local newspaper. It was a photo of a tiny black-and-white cat. A family was looking for a home for their last newborn cat. Moss fell in love with it at first sight and contacted the family. Soon, the cat came to Moss’s house. Moss called the cat Zebby because his colors looked like those of a zebra.
Moss once heard of studies showing that pets can help people deal with loneliness. However, she had no idea that Zebby would become her helper and her ears. From their first night together, Zebby has slept next to her. When he hears noises in the dark, he jumps up. “He became my night watch cat,” Moss said. “Sometimes he would run around the room until I woke up.”
After several weeks, Moss noticed that whenever her phone rang or someone knocked at the door, Zebby would touch her lightly. It wasn’t long before the cat took on another task: collecting Moss’s mail. Now whenever he hears the mailbox being opened, he runs towards it, carries the mail in his mouth and drops it at Moss’s feet.
This past May, Zebby was named Britain’s National Cat of the Year by Cats Protection. According to the largest cat charity, Zebby beat out about 3,000 other cats because of the many ways he makes Moss’s life easier. “Not yet, my dear.” He shook his head.
I felt relaxed. I didn’t want to meet Belinda’s parents—they might be ten times as loud and bossy as she was.
But Belinda had followed me.

(2024·江苏镇江·中考统考真题B篇)I have lived in China for six years, but still think the country is mysterious. So I made up my mind to go on a 3-month cycling journey to discover more.
My cycling journey was very safe in China because I never had a moment in which I felt I was in danger. Wherever I went, there was always phone signal, and even WeChat pay.
The beauty of nature was also fantastic. It simply took my breath away when I cycled on the way. With thick forests, blue lakes and green hills, there was so much to see.
The food was another highlight of my journey. I got to taste local food in every place I went. My favourite was the spicy food in Sichuan. No matter how much I ate, I never got sick of having different Chinese foods. There were so many different choices.
In addition, cycling in China cost less than I thought. I could even save some money during the trip to support a local charity.
The best part was about people. I met people from different ethnic minorities(少数民族)across China and I was even invited to attend a wedding by Tibetan girls. The wedding was amazing, full of dancing, laughter and fun. One time I me t a group of Chinese men who were also travelling, but by motorcycle. They invited me to stay with them in the mountains. We cooked fish that we caught from the lake together. It felt like true freedom from the busy feeling of daily life. Another example was impressive. When I met a group of cyclists in their 60s, they cycled better than me. It really encouraged me to push myself and go farther every day. Also, an experienced cyclist saved me when I got a flat tire(爆胎). He helped fix my tire.
By the end of my journey, I wanted to keep going. I felt like I could do it forever. It was truly an experience I will never forget. If anyone wants to explore in China, I would highly recommend going by bicycle.

My friend Julie and I are keen on creating a beautiful green town.
Gardening Course
Every September, our city has a special festival. Crowds of happy people go to the park, waving ribbons in their hands. That’s because the gardening competition takes place there.
For Julie and me, it was a pity that we couldn’t take part in the competition, for that was also the first day of our high school. We buried ourselves in choosing courses. We wanted to learn all about plants, gardening and farming. Finally, a course called Agriculture and Wildlife came into our sight. We thought it would help us succeed as gardeners.
Project presentation
After a year’s study, Julie advised me to give a presentation. There was a small plastic model of my idea on the table. On the other side of the table, my teachers were waiting to see my project—the green farm.
“Good morning!” I said “During my studies I’ve learned a lot about city farming. Now. I want to do something with what I’ve learned.”
I showed them the model. “This is the high street of our town. This is an old, nine-floor car park. No one has used it for the last two years and it’s now for sale.”
I continued the presentation. They could see my designs on the big screen when I talked.
“I’ve designed a city farm using the car park building. There will be eight floors to farm fruit and vegetables. This design can help us collect rainwater to wet the soil. And we can also use energy from the sun to power the special growing lights. “
“I will hire the space out to local people and they will sell everything good enough for the environment in local shops. Also, the ninth floor will be for those who want to grow their own plants.”
My audience looked interested and my project got the highest marks in my class. But in the real world. it couldn’t happen because the car park was not available.

Later, Julie helped me search the town for the perfect place for gardening, not in front of the Town Hall or the shopping centre. We tried to look for something different. Somewhere that was not the best neighbourhood, but a poor one. One where the road was full of boles and the pavement (人行道)was all broken. At last, we made it.
In the neighbourbood, we posted letters through people’s doors with gardening instructions. More and more people cared about that and began to plant vegetable gardens.
Then in the same neighbourhood, we put grass over those broken old pavements for the kids to play on. Finally, we put up a sign that said, “Have fun here.”
When we finished, we were both covered in soil and completely exhausted. But Julie put an arm around my shoulders and smiled. “Not bad!” she said. “We can do more to make our town greener!”.

In the bright moonlight, Jack is walking home. Suddenly, he finds a hawk(鹰)lying beside a box. Very curious, he begins to check it.
The hawk seems to be in pain. One of its wings looks broken, touching the ground. Its eyes look scared. So Jack takes off his T-shirt and wraps(包裹)it carefully round the hawk. Then he carries it home.
“I can’t take him into the house,” he thinks. “My mum doesn’t like animals in the house!”
Thinking for a while, Jack decides to hide the hawk in the garden shed(棚子). He secretly puts the hawk down on the floor with his T-shirt. Looking at the hawk, he says, “It’s your home now. Call you Falco, OK ”
After that, he goes back to his room. Unluckily, his parents are waiting for him. Finding his T-shirt missing, they get quite angry and don’t allow him to go out within a week. Jack goes to his room without any words, but he can’t fall asleep because he is worrying about Falco.
In the early morning, Jack takes some bread to feed Falco and goes back to his room secretly. After breakfast, Jack goes to the garden shed, holding a small bowl of water.

But now he is trapped on the earth. “How can I help you return to the sky, Falco ”
When Jack leaves the shed, his brother Jim is waiting for him outside.
“What’s so interesting in the shed ”
“Nothing.”
“Tell me the truth, Jack. I think you haven’t forgotten my broken rocket!”
Finally, Jack has no choice but to tell his brother the truth. Jim becomes very excited.
“Jim, please don’t say anything to Mum and Dad. I can repair your rocket.”
“My rocket isn’t important, Jack. But Falco is!”
Then the brothers discuss how to feed Falco. They decide to get help from their friend Holly because she knows a lot about animals, birds and nature. Later, the brothers go to Holly. Holly advises them to feed some meat to Falco.
Over the next few days, Falco gets much better. He always eats the meat Jack and Jim bring him from the kitchen. Jack even digs up worms in the park for Falco. Falco loves them! His feathers look bright and shiny, too. But he still can’t fly.
One morning, Holly comes to see Falco. After watching it for a while, Holly says, “Falco is well enough to fly again!” Hearing this, they happily open the door, and watch Falco step into the sunlight slowly. Falco beats his wings and tries to fly in small circles, then in large ones. Suddenly, he makes a loud cry and flies away. Jack feels a bit sad, but he knows they are right.
One evening, Jack and Jim are sitting in their room. It is a cool and quiet evening. Suddenly, he hears a cry from far away. A familiar(熟悉的)cry. A bird is flying in circles across the sky. It’s Falco! Jack watches it fly, happy and wild.

And she finished all of her food each evening. She was much healthier. After dinner, she liked sitting near the fire and talking to Martha.
“Why does Mr. Craven hate the locked garden ” Mary asked once.
“It was Mrs. Craven’s garden and she loved it. She looked after the flowers together with Mr. Craven. No gardeners were allowed in.”

When Martha left her alone. Mary decided to explore the house. She went quietly along corridors and up and down stairs. In the silence of the house she heard again the sound of a child crying. It was half past seven on Monday morning: time to get ready for school. Jay Stone rolled out of bed. He did a couple of quick wake-up exercises and then he went over to his mirror(镜子)and looked at himself.
“Not bad, Stone, not bad,” he said to himself and smiled. Maybe he wasn’t ready for Hollywood, but with his dark brown eyes and his thick brown hair, he had the looks that turned girls’ heads. He moved closer to the mirror and smiled, checking his teeth.
“Perfect,” he thought. “Good enough for a toothpaste ad.”
As his eyes moved down to his strong arms, he smiled again. The hours he spent in the gym and doing sit-ups have paid off.
But suddenly, the smile froze. His eyes moved from the upper part of his body down to his legs. His legs were short. Not just short, but far too short for his body. He had the upper body of a six-footer, but because of his legs he was much less than six feet! Six inches less! Sitting, he was as tall as almost anyone. Standing, he had to look up at most of the boys and even many of the girls.
Why didn’t his legs grow with the rest of his body He was one of the shortest boys in his class. He was the shortest in his own family, he was even shorter than his “little” sister—by three inches! Where did his legs come from
He certainly didn’t get them from his parents. They were both quite tall. Looking through old family photos, he found the answer. It was his grandfather on his mother’s side. His short legs were a gift from Grandpa Tuttle.
Thanks a lot, Grandpa!
Of course, the kids at school all noticed Jay’s short legs and they had a nickname(外号)for him: Stubs! Almost no one called him by his real name; they all called him Stubs. Stubs Stone, Jay didn’t like his nickname, but he had to accept it. He had no choice.
But Jay couldn’t see in the mirror what his legs could do. They were quick and strong. He was the youngest player on the Brewer High football team. He could run faster than anyone else in the team and, like a rabbit, he kept going and going. Even at basketball, where the other players were much taller than him, they were still afraid of him because of his speed.
Jay shook his head. “Stubs, Stubs Stone, the kid with stubby legs. Yeah, that’s me,” he said to himself with a little smile. Suddenly, he heard his mother’s voice.
“Jay! It’s breakfast time!”

“That dog is your responsibility (责任), Holly,” says her father. “No problem!” Holly agrees.

Some people think creativity is making something completely new, so they do not think of themselves as creative ones. However, some other people think creativity can just be expressing themselves through everyday acts and they are born creative because it is not an all-or-nothing quality or skill.
Whether or not we realize it, we all have the ability to express creativity. Sometimes the path to creative productivity is being willing to do something different.
Are you someone who loves to read comics Perhaps it is time you create one of your own. Don’t worry if you cannot draw very well or feel that you cannot write humorous reports for characters. Nobody says this is an exam! You only have to please yourself, to gain the satisfaction that you try something new, all on your own. If you feel easy, you can of course share it with our loved ones, or post it on social media,
Are you someone who likes to express yourself in writing Try writing a blog. This is like the new version of a diary. In your blog, you can write about your thoughts, opinions and experiences. You can also write stories or plays, if you feel up to it! The blog provides you with a platform to create something new every day, in written forms.
Are you someone who likes to be alone Now, think about the things that make you happy. Find a small place in your room, or any place in your home, where you can spend time with yourself. It can be a small corner next to your bed or a wall. It can be a poster of your favourite rock star or photos of your friends. You can also pick a guitar if you like to play instruments, or a few storybooks if you love reading. Some of you may like flowers, candles or pretty things. Decorate your area with your favourite things in any way you like. That is creativity! And if you do feel bored with this, you can change, add or remove something.
By realizing the chances in our daily lives to inspire our creativity, no matter how small, we may become more comfortable with taking bigger creative leaps in other aspects of our lives.

But Belinda had followed me.
“Not yet ” she shouted. “Why not I’ll send them a message! They’ll listen to me!”
Belinda ran to the radio. She shouted into it so loudly that I had to cover all my four ears. “Mummy! Daddy! I’m on an awful spaceship full of purple people! Come and find me now!”
“Poor Belinda!” my sister came and said. “Her parents must be missing her.”
“Huh!” I snorted(发出哼声). “Missing her You’re joking! Who would want such a bossy kid back They probably lost her on purpose.”

“But what happened ” Mary asked,
“There was an old tree in the garden with a branch(树枝)like a seat, Mrs. Craven often sat there, reading and talking. One day, the branch broke and she fell down. She was badly hurt and died soon. Mr. Craven locked the garden and never talked about it.”

The wind roared around the house, and the doors and windows banged. Mary listened, and through the noise she thought that she heard a child crying.

(2024·江苏连云港·中考统考真题B篇)Holly gets a pet dog. She’s so happy, and the dog is happy, too! “I want to call him Eco,” says Holly. “Come here, Eco!” And Eco wags (摇摆) his tail.
“That dog is your responsibility (责任), Holly,” says her father. “No problem!” Holly agrees.
Before school, Holly takes Eco for his first morning walk. She feels very tired. It’s really cold and dark—and it’s so early! But Eco doesn’t mind. He runs, stops, runs again, sees a black cat, tries to run after it and nearly pulls Holly off her feet!
Holly realizes it’s late when she gets back from the walk. She quickly eats a piece of bread, takes her bag and jacket, and runs to school.
What a busy morning! But that’s not all for looking after a pet dog.
When Holly takes Eco for his evening walk, it’s quite dark outside. Holly feels nervous. She runs along the road with him, but it’s difficult. Because Eco often stops to study the bushes and trees. And he often tries to catch birds, or play with sticks and fallen leaves.

“Oh, no,” says Holly. She realizes it’s time to train the dog. “He needs to know the rules.”

(2024·江苏南通·中考统考真题B篇)
