①The word “zhiyin”, which means close friends, comes from the story of Yu Boya and Zhong Ziqi in the Warring States Period.
②Boya was good at playing the guqin. One day, he was playing music on his way home on the boat. To Boya’s surprise, Ziqi, a woodcutter who happened to pass by, could understand exactly what he wanted to express through his music. After a long talk, they became good friends. It was nearly dark when we got to the wooden bridge. We could see water over the middle of it, and this often happened when the river was high. But the moment my feet touched the first part of the bridge, I was sure something was wrong. I dared not go forward and stopped suddenly.
“Go on, Beauty,” said my master, and he touched me with the whip (鞭子). I did not move, so he hit me sharply. I jumped, but I would not go forward.
“There’s something wrong, sir,” said John, and he jumped from the carriage (马车) and began to look around. He tried to lead me forward. “Come on, Beauty, what’s the matter ”
Of course I could not tell him, but I knew very well that the bridge was not safe.
Just then a man ran out of the house on the other side of the bridge. “Stop! Stop!” he cried.
“What’s the matter ” shouted my master. “The bridge is broken in the middle,” said the man, “and part of it was carried away. If you come across, you’ll fall into the river.”
“Thank you, Beauty!” John said to me, and turned me gently round to the right-hand road by the riverside.
It got much darker but quieter now. The wind seemed to have luffed off and the rain stopped as I ran merrily towards home by another, much longer road. For some time neither my master nor John spoke, but then my master spoke in a serious voice.
“We were very close to losing our lives in that river, John,” he said. “Men may be clever enough to think of things for themselves, but animals know things without thinking, which often saves a man’s life, as it has saved ours tonight. We don’t realize how wonderful the animals are, nor do we make friends with them as we should.”

The cub was sure to die, but luckily his mother, the she-wolf, heard his frightened calls and came to save him.The she-wolf took the weasel in her mouth and threw it up into the air, catching it in her teeth and killing it. Like detectives, archaeologists use evidence to solve mysteries. Detectives look for clues to solve crimes. Archaeologists look for clues to help them understand how people lived long ago. In fact, the word “archaeology” means “the study of ancient things”. One type of evidence used to learn about the past is pottery.
People have used pottery for thousands of years all over the world. Old pottery is usually found in pieces called “potsherds”. Sometimes potsherds found in the same place can be put back together to recreate the original pot. Even in pieces, old pottery can teach us about the past. When examining pottery, archaeologists consider not only its appearance but what it was made of and how it was made. With this knowledge, they can get information about people’s lives in ancient times. ①
Pottery is made by first adding water to a kind of soil called clay. When wet, clay can be formed into shapes. It is then heated. This hardens(使变硬) the clay and allows it to keep its shape. To make clay easier to shape and heat, potters(制陶工) use something called “temper”. Different materials can be used as temper. An archaeologist can tell where a pot came from by the types of clay and temper that were used. Sometimes a pot found in one location might have materials from another place. ②
Some of the earliest pots were made quite simply. A piece of clay was hollowed(掏空) out and shaped into a bowl. It was then heated at a low temperature. The finished pot was rough(粗糙), and often undecorated. This type of pot might be used for cooking. ③
Later, coiled pots were made. These were made by first rolling the clay into a long snake shape. The coil was then wound(绕) in circles to form a pot. They were often decorated in different ways. These pots were heated at high temperatures. The higher the temperature, the harder and longer-lasting the pot. Further improvements in pottery-making developed in different times and places. ④
A pot’s shape and decoration can provide clues about the past. Painted pictures might show events from daily life or from ancient stories. Archaeologists know certain shapes and styles that were common in different times and places.
Archaeologists study the differences in types of pottery closely. Because of their work, these daily objects can tell some of the mysteries of the past.

(2024·江苏无锡·三模)“Quickly, Dorothy,” she shouted. “Go to the cellar (地窖).”
Aunt Em ran to the door of the cellar and opened it. Dorothy picked up Toto and ran to the cellar door. Before she could climb down the ladder into the cellar, a great cyclone (龙卷风) picked up the house. It turned it round and round and round and then carried it high into the sky.
It was not very dark. Dorothy felt as if she were riding through the sky. She held on to Toto and climbed under her bed, where she stayed for several hours. Then, although the house was still moving, she fell asleep.
When she woke up, she did not know how much later, the house was on the ground. It was in a field full of flowers, and there were hundreds of beautifully colored birds flying about and singing. Not far away, there was a stream with clear, fresh water.
Dorothy was still under her bed. She got up and left the house. She was surprised to see three little men and a little woman walking toward her. They were very strangely dressed. The men’s clothes were white and had little stars all over them.
When they saw Dorothy, they walked up to her and bowed (鞠躬).
“Welcome to the land of the Munchkins,” one of the little men said. “We thank you for killing the Wicked Witch of the East. Now our people are free.”
“I’m afraid you are making a mistake,” Dorothy said. “I didn’t kill any witch.”
“Your house did,” one of the little men said. “Look!”
He pointed to the house. Dorothy saw two feet sticking out from under it.

(2024·江苏扬州·三模)Beer and eggs are commonly seen in the kitchen. However, scientists recently found that they were used in historic paintings, too.
To preserve (保存) Danish paintings, a group of researchers studied what ancient paint was made of. They did experiments on small pieces of paintings that had already been cut off from the original artwork.
According to their paper published in Science Advances, grains (谷物) and yeast (醇母) were found on the base of the paintings. Beer was the most common drink in the 19th century in Denmark, and its by-products were spent grains and yeast.
The study showed that they were used to provide a stable painting surface. Researchers also pointed out that beer by-product was used as a “glue” because it had a lot of sugar. With beer added, the paint can also dry faster.
Apart from beer, egg has long been found in oil-based paints used by artists in the 15th century, such as Italian painter Leonardo da Vinci. A recent study published in Nature Communications may have “cracked” the secret of how eggs can help preserve artworks.
The researchers re-created the ancient paint by adding egg yolks (蛋黄) to oil paint. They then looked into how it changed over time. The findings showed that the yolk’s proteins helped slow the oxidation (氧化) of the paint. It could also reduce wrinkling (皱褶) as the egg makes the paint more smooth.
However, the oil paint with added egg usually takes longer to dry. It seemed fine for artists—they were willing to accept to have their work preserved for longer.
“The more we understand how artists choose and use their materials, the more we can appreciate (欣赏) what they’re doing”, Ken Sutherland, an expert at the Art Institute of Chicago, US, told Science News. Sutherland added that research like this could help people have a deeper understanding of the artworks.

(2024·江苏泰州·三模)① Everybody enjoys acts of kindness. But can you explain why Some people think kindness is something out of love and care. While others believe it is just a tool that we use to become more popular. But research shows that being kind can activate (激活) an area of the brain called striatum (纹状体). Research also shows that kindness improves people mood. But why and how does it happen Here are number of different ways.
② Being kind can make someone smile. If you see yourself smiling in a situation, people around may be smiling, too. This is especially true for your close friends and family. A kind act makes someone who is sad feel better. It can also make ourselves feel good, so why not set off that chain (链条) of good feelings to people around
③ Secondly, being kind starts or develops a social connection with others. Kind acts like buying someone a present make friendships stronger. Research has shown that spending money on others may help you get a stronger feeling of happiness than spending it on yourself. Similarly, charities also open up new circles of people to connect with someone on the other side of the word.
④ In another recent research, even children in their first year of secondary school know how being kind makes them feel happy. If one person is kind, he or she make others in the group kind. It also lifts everyone’s spirits. Imagine that you make cakes for the office and it makes others do it each month. Then you’re getting cakes a lot more days than providing them.

(2024·江苏扬州·三模)Artificial intelligence (AI) tools designed to operate at human levels have been more and more popular over the past year. These include OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Bard and Microsoft’s AI-powered search engine Bing. Such tools, also known as chatbots or generative AI, are computer-powered systems. They are designed to interact smoothly with humans and perform high-level writing and creative work.
In recent months, these tools have proved an ability to produce high-quality work. This has led some technology experts to warn that generative (生成的) Al systems could end up replacing (取代) workers in many industries.
This year, researchers at Harvard Business School and other organizations carried out an experiment. It aimed to test how well AI tools could help workers perform their usual duties or tasks. It involved more than 700 business advisors, called consultants, from Massachusetts-based Boston Consulting Group.
Harvard Business School recently published the results from the experiment in a working paper. The main findings suggest that AI tools like ChatGPT can greatly improve worker perfornance. For example, researchers found hat, on average, workers who used OpenAI’s latest ChatGPT 4 tool completed 12 percent more tasks than non-ChatGPT users. Tasks carried out with help from the Al technology were completed 25 percent faster. And the team found the quality of work performed by consultants using ChatGPT 4 increased by about 40 percent.
However, the paper also found areas where the performance of consultants using ChatGPT 4 dropped. The researchers said this was especially true with tasks the Al tool was not good at completing. “Of tasks the AI was good at, the experiment showed it greatly improved human performance,” the paper said. “But for tasks ChatGPT 4 was not right for, humans relied too much on the AI and were more likely to make mistakes.”
The team suggests one of the biggest challenges to companies effectively (有效) using AI is not knowing which tasks can be completed best with the technology. Finding this out will require businesses to carry out thoughtful research and training efforts in order to find the right mix of AI and human-level work.

(2024·江苏徐州·三模)I hoped to be set free one day, so I was nice to the Lilliputians. Gradually, they lost fear of me.Sometimes the children even played hide-and-seek in my hair.
One day, the king said to me, “Gulliver, I invite you to watch an important performance. It is a competition called Rope Dancing.” In the competition, a thin rope was tied between two poles very high above the ground. People had to dance on this rope. Each dancer tried to jump higher than the others. I had never seen such a dangerous sport
“Your Majesty,” I said, “many dancers must fall and be hurt or killed.”
“Yes,” he replied, “But I will give the best jobs in my kingdom to the men who are not afraid and jump the highest.” “What a strange way to choose who will work for the country!” I thought.
Then, as the king watched, I tied each corner of my handkerchief to a strong stick, and pushed the four sticks into the ground. My handkerchief was now under the rope but above the ground. Any dancer who fell would land on the handkerchief and not get hurt. The king was very pleased with my invention. His family and many other people watched the rope dancing.

(2024·江苏南京·三模)Long ago, China was divided into kingdoms (战国). The kingdoms were often at war, so good military leaders were important. One such leader was Tian Ji, a general in the State of Qi.
Tian Ji’s best friend was Sun Bin. Sun Bin had been a military official in the State of Wei. After he was unfairly fired from his job, he moved to the State of Qi. Sun Bin taught Tian Ji a lot about military strategy.
At that time, horse racing was the most popular entertainment for the rich. People bet money on the races. Tian Ji was a fan of horse racing, but he wasn’t very good at betting.
One day, Tian Ji again lost money at the races. He went home feeling sorry for himself. When Sun Bin saw how sad Tian Ji was, he said, “Take me with you next time. Maybe I can help you win!”
A week later, Tian Ji did just that. Sun Bin learned how the races worked very quickly. He saw that the horses were divided into three types according to speed. First-class horses were the fastest, and third-class horses were the slowest. Each type had their own race and people bet on each race. In order to win the overall bet, a person only needed to win two of the three races. Sun Bin also noticed that each type had a different saddle color. This was to tell the different horses apart. Soon, Sun Bin developed a strategy to help Tian Ji.
“Trust me,” he told Tian Ji. “I know exactly how you can win!”
Tian Ji got so excited he challenged the king to a race.
Tian Ji did everything that Sun Bin told him to do. For the first race, he put the first-class saddle on his third-class horse. The king’s first-class horse easily beat Tian Ji’s third-class horse.
For the second race, Sun Bin told Tian Ji to put the second-class saddle on his first-class horse. And sure enough, Tian Ji won the second race. His first-class horse was better than the king’s second-class horse.
Finally, for the third race, Tian Ji used his second-class horse. Once again, he won. This time it was against the king’s third-class horse. The king was shocked. Tian Ji was the overall winner.
The king congratulated Tian Ji, but he was curious.
“Tian Ji, where did you get such good horses ” he asked.
“Your Majesty,” Tian Ji replied, “I did not win because I found great horses. I won because of the strategy I used. It was Sun Bin’s strategy, and it worked!”
“Really ” said the king. “What exactly was this strategy ”
Tian Ji told the king all about how he switched horses. He explained how Sun Bin knew that even when two opponents were unevenly matched, a strategy could be used to minimize losses. In this case, losing only once meant that Tian Ji was still the overall winner.
Hearing this, the king immediately made Sun Bin the military adviser for the whole army. Sun Bin’s strategies and Tian Ji’s leadership led the State of Qi to many military victories.

(2024·江苏无锡·三模)Crying babies, buzzing mosquitoes (蚊子), ringing car alarms ...They’re all bad noises. But what’s the worst A recent survey (调查) lists the things we hate to hear.
The list of horrible noises has over 100 items. Mobile phone ringing appears near the top. Other noises include barking dogs, electric leaf blowers, loud snoring (鼾) and banging noises early on a Sunday morning.
However, Top One on the list was the sound of a dentist’s drill (牙医的钻头).” That just sends shivers down my spine,” said one person: “After a visit to the dentist, I sometimes wake up at night with that sound in my head. It’s horrible,” said another. “I’ve seen patients shaking with fear when I bring out the drill,” explained a dentist. Of course, anyone who goes to the dentist and hears the sound will probably agree with that.
But there’s some good news. A new device (装置) developed by experts at universities can reduce the sound of the drill. The small device allows patients to listen to music on an MP3 player without the sound of the drill. However, patients are still able to hear the dentist’s voice because not all sounds are filtered out (被过滤).
The theory behind it is simple. Microphones are placed close to the dental drill. These pick up any sounds and transform them into digital signals. Then, electronic filters reduce any unwanted sound waves. However, the great thing is that this technology also allows other noises (such as the dentist’s voice) to come through.
It’s easy to use, too. Patients simply plug (插) the device into their MP3 players. Then they can listen to music and hear the dentist’s voice without being disturbed by the noise of the drill. Fantastic!
So, next time you go to the dentist, remember to bring your MP3 player.

(2024·江苏扬州·三模)Awe is the feeling we get in the presence of something vast that challenges our understanding of the world, like looking up at millions of stars in the night sky or shaking hands with a basketball superstar. When people feel awe, they may use other words to talk about the experience, such as wonder, amazement or excitement.
We often think about awe when we experience uncommon and extraordinary events, such as viewing a sunrise over the Grand Canyon or watching Olympians break world records. But when scientists study people’s experiences of awe, they suggest awe is also found in everyday life—watching a gingko tree change from green to yellow, or seeing a stranger give food to a homeless person.
The feeling of awe affects the way we view ourselves. The experience of awe can have a deep influence on our mental (心理的)health, by allowing us to put our worries into perspective. When we are in the presence of something vast and indescribable, we feel unimportant, and so do our worries. The experience of awe lifts us out of the common practical thoughts that control our daily lives. and it allows us to have inner peace.
In areas where the population can easily get to beautiful green spaces, people report greater happiness and goodwill toward others. A study showed that older adults who took weekly 15-minute outdoor walks in nature for eight weeks reported increased positive emotions and less pain in their daily lives.
People in awe are more likely to show kindness and feel a greater sense of connection to others and the world. In moments of awe, we direct ourselves from the sense that we are solely (独自地)in control of our own future to the feeling we are part of a community. When we give less attention to our own goals and needs, we are more likely to be able to notice others and what they may be experiencing.
In sum, awe arises when we run into the wonders of life and leads to a disappearing of the self. Stepping outside of oneself is a valuable skill. It is possible to find awe-inspiring moments in all different places. Therefore, actively look for the experiences that feed your own hunger for awe, be it through admiring the trees in your neighborhood, or seeing the goodness in others. Take the time to slow down and open your mind to those things which you do not fully understand. You will be the better for it—and, as your feelings of awe spread through acts of kindness, so will the rest of us.

One of the phrases which greatly puzzled me was “entertaining angels unaware”. How could anybody be unaware of entertaining an angel I had never thought that angelic qualities could hide under very common voices and in everyday bodies.
My angel, as it turned out, hid inside the little figure of my school-teacher, Miss McKenzie. To me, she was always a little old lady, with her grey hair framing a round rosy face and caught up in an old-fashioned bun (发髻) on top of her head.
Although I enjoyed Miss McKenzie’s approval, I never really felt very close to her. It never dawned on me to ask her advice as to what I should do when I left school. Surely there was only one thing to do: get a job and earn money as quickly as possible. But Miss McKenzie had other ideas. We in our house knew nothing of scholarships for fatherless children. The idea of a child from a working-class family going to college was the very thing of story-books.
Unknown to us, she forced the headmaster to put my name forward for a special scholarship open to children who showed some promise, and who would receive further education. He agreed, although he was a bit worried about the cost of keeping me at college for a whole year. No earnings from me, and fares and clothes to be covered, for, of course, only the fees would be paid if I won.
Miss McKenzie brushed all argument (争论) aside. To this day I can remember my complete feelings when, on being asked if she felt I had any special qualities, this elderly teacher banged the desk with her hand, and declared (断言) in an American saying I never suspected she knew, “I’d bet my bottom dollar on this girl!”
I shook at the passion (激情) in her voice, and at her trust in me. “What if I fail her ” I thought to myself. “What if she has to pay all the money back if I let her down ” I knew we hadn’t a spare dollar to repay anybody, and I was sick with a sense of responsibility in case I messed up.
The time at college went by quickly. At the end of my year at college, I was able to lay before her the college gold medal as the year’s top student and a whole pile of awards.
And suddenly as I looked at her, and saw her eyes shining with pride behind the gold-rimmed glasses, I realized how widely she had thrown open the door of chance for me. And I knew for the first time what the phrase “entertaining angels unaware” meant. For there, standing before me in class, was my very own angel, Miss McKenzie.

(2024·江苏宿迁·三模)The pirates (海盗) did not return. After lunch, the doctor took his pistol (手枪) and sword. He put the map in his pocket and left. He wanted to find Ben Gunn.
It was very bat and unpleasant inside the fort. I had a plan and I needed to leave the foal. I took two pistols and left quickly when Gray and the square were with the captain.
First I ran down to the white rocks and looked for Ben Gunn’s boat. I soon found it under bushes. It was a simple boat, made out of branches and goat skins, and it was very light to carry.
I decided to wait until it was dark and row to the Hispaniola. I wanted to cut the ship adrift (漂流), leaving it to float with the currents (洋流). As I waited, I could see the pirates fire burning, and out on the watch the lights on the ship.
As soon as it was dark, I got into the boat and rowed out to the Hispaniola. I found the rope that connected the ship to the anchor (锚) and cut through it with my knife until the ship was free. As I did this, I could hear the angry voices of Israel Hands and another mutineer (叛变者) in a cabin above me.
The ship began to move away in the night air. By then I was so tired that I fell asleep and dreamed of home and the admirel Benbow.
When I awoke, I found myself at the south-west end of Treasure Island. I was only about 300 metres from the shore. When I lay quietly in the bottom of the boat, it moved perfectly over the watch.
But as soon as I sat up, the boat went out of control. So I lay down, and used the paddle from that position. I moved slowly closer to the land, but the current was strong and the boat moved past the bay (海湾).
I moved slowly to the next bay, and suddenly I saw the Hispaniola in front of me. The wind and the currents were moving the ship. I couldn’t see anyone on it. As soon as I was close enough, I held a rope and climbed on board. Just in time, as my little boat hit against the side of the ship and it sank under the water. Do you know full confidence in your memory Look at the two pictures and choose the one which you think is correct. Then check with the answer.
Answer: The one on the right is correct. Pikachu never had a black tail in any of its various versions. Its yellow tail does have brown fur at its base, but there is no sign of black fur on its tail. There has been a discussion about whether it is shi or si in the sentence. “Thus when Heaven is about to confer a great office on any man…”
Most people voted si as what they learned at school. However, People’s Education Press (PEP), a leading publisher of Chinese textbooks, claimed on Oct. 26 that all its textbooks say shi. Supporters of si feel shocked and say they’ve experienced the “Mandela Effect”—the situation in which a large number of people believe that an event happened when it didn’t.
Many people believed that former South African president Nelson Mandela died in the 1980s in prison. However, Mandela was alive and well, finally passing away in 2013. US researcher Fiona Broome created a website to detail her discovery of this public phenomenon (现象), coining the term which has been in use till now.
Some often joke that our memories have been changed by a strange force. In fact, psychologists have looked into the reasons for the Mandela Effect, as reported on the US-based website Verywell Mind.
For example, your mind may fill in gaps missing in your memory to make more sense of it, which is called confabulation (虚构症). However, try not to feel bad—this is not lying, but rather remembering details that never happened.
The Internet may be another reason why we tend to have Mandela Effect events, as the news we read can be false from the beginning. In 2018, Science Journal published a study of over 100,000 news stories discussed across Twitter. It showed that false news can spread faster and reach more people than the truth. As a powerful way to spread information, the Internet might be the main reason for falsehoods to enter our minds.
72.Why does the writer mention the discussion about the sentence in Paragraph 2
A.To solve a mystery of Mandela Effect. B.To raise readers’ interest in confabulation.
C.To introduce the topic of the Mandela Effect. D.To discuss which word is the right one, si or shi.
73.Which of the following words has the closest meaning to “coining” in Paragraph 4
A.creating B.borrowing C.describing D.correcting
74.What is the “Mandela Effect” about
A.Attitudes to a special event. B.A kind of psychological effect.
C.The benefit of good memory. D.The effect of Mandela’s death.
75.What can we infer from the passage
A.Most people know the former South African president Mandela well.
B.The word si or shi both existed in Chinese textbooks published by the PEP.
C.If you can tell the right Pikachu, you will never suffer from the Mandela Effect.
D.If you remember details that never happened, you may experience the Mandela Effect.
