As soon as Bassanio and Graziano left for Venice, Portia Arold Lorenzo said that she and Nerissa were going to stay in a convent until their husbands came back. She told him she wanted to prepare herself for marriage. She asked Lorenzo and Jessica to look after the palace and the servants until she came back. Lorenzo was very happy to do this for her. He thought she was a very wise and kind woman. “Bassanio was lucky to have her for his wife,” he said. Portia said she agreed to let Bassanio go to Venice because Antonio’s letter showed her that he must be a very good man.
Portia and Nerissa, however, were not going to a convent. Portia had a different plan, but she did not want to tell Lorenzo and Jessica what it was. It was a secret. She called one of her servants. She told him to go to Padua and find her friend, Bellario. She gave him a letter to give to Bellario. “He will give you something I need to bring back to me,” she said. “Bring them to the ship that goes to Venice. Hurry! I will be at the ship before you get there.” The servant hurried away with the letter, and Portia called Nerissa. “Come on, Nerissa,” she said, “we are going to see our husbands sooner than they think.”
She told Nerissa that their husbands would not recognize them because they were going to disguise themselves as men. “I know how to behave like a man,” she said. “I will wear a dagger and walk like a man. I will talk about the battles I have won. I will tell lies about the women who fell in love with me. I’ll tell people that I refused their love and that they cried and that some of them even died of sadness. I’ll say that I’m sad about causing them to die, and everyone will believe that I am a man.”

Antonio’s friend, Bassanio, needs money to marry a woman named Portia. Antonio agrees to borrow the money from Shylock on the condition that if he cannot repay the money, Shylock can take a pound of his flesh.
Meanwhile, Portia’s father has left a will stating that any man who wishes to marry her must choose the correct casket out of three, one gold, one silver, and one lead. Many men have tried and failed, but Bassanio correctly chooses the lead casket and wins Portia’s hand in marriage.
Back in Venice, news reaches Antonio that his ships, which were carrying his goods and making him money, have been lost at sea. He is unable to repay his debt to Shylock, who demands his pound of flesh as agreed.
Portia, disguised as a lawyer, arrives in Venice to help Antonio. She argues that Shylock must take it without losing any blood, as stated in their agreement. Shylock is forced to give up his claim, and Antonio is saved.

Shylock was sharpening his knife, preparing to take Antonio’s pound of flesh. Portia and Nerrisa arrived disguised as men. Portia pretended she was a judge and listened to the arguments about the pound of flesh.
The young judge asked Shylock to be mercy on Antonio, but shylock disagreed. Shylock said, “I will show no mercy. I want justice, the penalty written in the contract!” Bassanio wanted to give Shylock ten times the money Antonio borrowed, even including his hands, heads or heart. This time, Portia disagreed. She thought they couldn’t change the law of Venice. They must obey it. Portia asked Antonio to prepare his body for Shylock’s knife. Shylock was very happy. He said the judge was much older in wisdom than in years.
At that moment, Bassanio remembered Antonio borrowed money from Shylock to help him court Portia. His friend was going to die. Bassanio would do anything to save his friend. He would die in his place or give up his wife if it could help. On the other hand, Antonio felt happy. He said he was lucky because he would never grow old and sick. He comforted Bassanio.
But Shylock’s dream didn’t come true. Portia said Shylock could take Antonio’s pound of flesh, but he could not take any blood, or he would lose everything. Shylock decided not to take the flesh but ninety thousand dollars. Portia disagreed. Shylock said he just wanted his own money back without charging the interest. Portia still disagreed. She said according to the law, if anyone planned to kill a citizen of Venice, he would lose everything. And the duke was the only person who could save him from death. The duke said Shylock must first become a Christian. If Shylock didn’t do so, the duke would not have mercy on him, and Shylock would die. Shylock realized he had no choice. He agreed.

The Merchant of Venice is the important early works of Shakespeare, which is a comedy with a great satire (讽刺). In the play Shakespeare not only speaks highly of love and friendship, but mirrors the social background of that time.
Antonio had a friend Bassanio who spent money without limitation. As a result, he ran out of his wealth soon. Bassoano fell in love with Portia, but he was required to pay a large amount of money. So he went to Anotnio for help. Antonio is also a wealthy merchant, but he didn’t have so much cash. Antonio went to Shylock, a moneylender, for help.
Having been scolded (责备) by Antonio for being cruel and greedy, Shylock hated him. However, he agreed to lend him the money only if Antonio would allow him to take a pound of his flesh when he could not repay him within three months. At last Antonio agreed to the contract (契约). But unluckily, Antonio lost all his ships at sea. He was not able to pay back to Shylock, and the Jew went to court of Venice to carry out his deal.
To save Antonio’s life, Portia pretended to be a famous lawyer. According to the contract, she agreed to Shylock’s request, but insisted a pound of meat must be cut by just a pound of flesh, no more and no less. At the same time, he was not allowed to let any of Antonio’s blood drop. The wise judge announced that according to the law if anyone tried to kill a citizen of Venice, everything he owned should be taken away. Shylock would rather die if all his money and goods were taken away. Finally, Antonio gave up his part of Shylock’s money on condition that Shylock should leave the money to his own daughter upon his death. The cruel moneylender had to agree.
