Feeling upset is part of life. Sometimes stress happens at home or school. It may leave us feeling angry or worried. We cannot control everything that happens around us. However, we can learn to calm ourselves down. With practice, we can learn useful ways to keep cool when we feel upset.
Remove yourself from the situation
Disagreements with other people can be hard to deal with. They can lead to upset feelings. Sometimes we need to get away from the situation. It is OK to say, “I’m going to take a break.” Then you can go for a walk. Or you can find a quiet place to sit. The purpose is to give yourself some space to calm down.
Accept your thoughts
Feeling upset is natural. Everyone gets upset sometimes. Accepting that we are upset is healthy. If we accept it, we can choose what to do about it. We can even talk to ourselves about how we’re feeling. When you are upset, say something like this in your head, “I’m feeling really upset right now. That is OK. I can control what I do next.”
Change your language
When we’re upset, sometimes we use unkind words to punish ourselves. We don’t have to do that. To calm down, we can try to say something to make ourselves feel comfortable. For example, instead of saying, “I am always in trouble,” we might say, “I made a mistake. It happens to everyone. Next time I’ll do it differently.”
Do breathing (呼吸) exercises
When we feel upset, the heart beats faster. The body prepares as if it is going to be in a fight. You can use breathing to calm down. If possible, find a place where you can sit comfortably. Then focus on your breath, breathing deeply and slowly. This practice slows down the heart and helps us calm down.

Race walking shares many fitness benefits with running, research shows, while most likely contributing to fewer injuries. It does, however, have its own problem.
Race walkers are conditioned athletes. The longest track and field event at the Summer Olympics is the 50-kilometer race walk, which is about five miles longer than the marathon. But the sport’s rules require that a race walker’s knees stay straight through most of the leg swing and one foot remain in contact (接触) with the ground at all times. It’s this strange form that makes race walking such an attractive activity, however, says Jaclyn Norberg, an assistant professor of exercise science at Salem State University in Salem, Mass.
Like running, race walking is physically demanding, she says. According to most calculations, race walkers moving at a pace of six miles per hour would burn about 800 calories (卡路里) per hour, which is approximately twice as many as they would burn walking, although fewer than running, which would probably burn about 1,000 or more calories per hour.
However, race walking does not pound the body as much as running does, Dr. Norberg says. According to her research, runners hit the ground with as much as four times their body weight per step, while race walkers, who do not leave the ground, create only about 1.4 times their body weight with each step.
As a result, she says, some of the injuries associated with running, such as runner’s knee, are uncommon among race walkers. But the sport’s strange form does place considerable stress on the ankles and hips, so people with a history of such injuries might want to be cautious in adopting the sport. In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first consult a coach or experienced racer to learn proper technique, she says. It takes some practice.
24.Why are race walkers conditioned athletes
A.They must run long distances. B.They are qualified for the marathon.
C.They have to follow special rules. D.They are good at swinging their legs.
25.What advantage does race walking have over running
A.It’s more popular at the Olympics. B.It’s less challenging physically.
C.It’s more effective in body building. D.It’s less likely to cause knee injuries.
26.What is Dr. Norberg’s suggestion for someone trying race walking
A.Getting experts’ opinions. B.Having a medical checkup.
C.Hiring an experienced coach. D.Doing regular exercises.
27.Which word best describes the author’s attitude to race walking
A.Skeptical B.Objective C.Tolerant D.Conservative
Have you ever thought about what’s more important, looking fashionable or feeling comfortable You might have noticed many people choosing style over comfort and some even go to extremes (极端) to follow fashion. But we should remember: being fashionable isn’t everything. It’s more important to be healthy.
Some people believe that they need to be a certain size to look good. So, they start extreme diets (日常饮食) that are not good for their health. They might not eat meals or eat too little, which can make them feel sick. Is it a healthy way to live
Also, many girls wear shoes with very high heels (鞋跟). They might think high heels make them look taller. But these shoes may hurt their feet and make it hard to walk comfortably, and it can increase risks of falls. Some even wear tight (紧的) clothes that influence blood circulation (循环), making it hard to breathe (呼吸). Should we put fashion over comfort and physical health
Besides, some boys and girls spend a lot of time and money changing their hair color. The things they use is usually harmful to their health. To make their hair straight or curly, they also use tools that are hot enough to burn their hair. But using these tools too often or at very high temperatures can make the hair dry or even burnt. Is it really worth it to risk our health, spending so much time and money
So, let’s rethink what’s really important. Is it fashion or is it our well-being Clothes or hairstyles don’t tell us anything about a person’s character. Instead of spending a lot of time choosing clothes, we could use that time to do fun things with friends. And instead of following extreme diets, let’s eat properly and exercise more. Remember, your value is not decided by what you look like, but by who you are as a person.
28.Why do some people go on extreme diets according to the passage
A.Because the diets are healthy. B.Because they just want to look good.
C.Because they want to save time. D.Because they want to save money.
29.What is the writer’s purpose of using a question in each paragraph
A.To ask for help from readers.
B.To tell readers how to spend time and money.
C.To describe the latest fashion.
D.To lead readers to think about the topic.
30.What does the underlined word “well-being” in Paragraph 5 mean
A.Growth. B.Health. C.Warmth. D.Wealth.
31.Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage
(①=Paragraph 1②=Paragraph 2,…)
A. B. C. D.
Many students are taking part in after-school tutoring (辅导). I’m afraid I can’t keep up with my studies if I don’t do the same. Should I try this myself Abai
Dear Abai, You’re not alone in this matter. I used to be pretty bad at math. I took part in after-school tutoring three times a week. My tutor gave me homework, just like our teachers in school. It made me feel really tired. So after about two months, I decided to give up. I listened more carefully in class and started to think about questions on my own. By doing this many times, I did better in my study. You should find the way that works best for you. Don’t just do what others do. Find your weakness and try to overcome it, no matter whether you are tutored or self-taught. Li Ming
Dear Abai, It’s good that you want to improve your schoolwork. Every student should have this goal. You should do everything you can to raise your grades. However, not every student likes to study in the same way. Some people do prefer to have a one-on-one tutor. Others prefer to learn in groups. Some simply like to study on their own. The key is to find the way that works best for you. My suggestion would be to try a tutor first. You can see how the first few tutoring lessons go. If they don’t help you improve your work, you can stop. But the decision is up to you. Mike

五、任务型阅读
Do you have any problems in your life and don’t know how to be happy If so, you will find Being a Happy Teenager written by an Australian writer Andrew Matthews helpful. In his book, Matthews tells us how to have a happy life and answers the questions of teenagers. There are many subjects, such as parents and friends, and the book says we should stop being angry and forgive (宽恕) others. The book tells us some useful ways, such as how to understand better what you learned.
Many teenagers think happiness comes from a good exam result or praise from other people.
But you can still be happy when there are no such “good” things. Success comes from a good attitude (态度). If you learn from problems, you will have success in the future. Some school students have problems, such as being too tall or too short. But Matthews tells us that happiness comes from thinking in a positive (积极的) way. If you are tall, you can get a better view (视线) when you see a film; if you are short, your clothes and shoes take up less room in your bedroom! This is Matthews’ most important lesson, “Choose to be happy!”

There are many subjects, such as parents and friends, and the book says we should stop being angry and forgive (宽恕) others. The book tells us some useful ways, such as how to understand better what you learned.
Many teenagers think happiness comes from a good exam result or praise from other people.
