Four unusual festivals around the world
The Wife Carrying World Championships (冠军称号) —
Sonkaj rvi, Finland
Although the exact origins of the tradition are unknown because of
its long history, but today, wife carrying is practiced around the world.
Participants are allowed to carry their wives in various ways, including a
piggyback or a fireman's carry (over the shoulder). The prize for

You may consider how a monkey would taste, but this is a buffet
for monkeys. The local monkeys in Lopburi are gifted with a feast of
tons of fruits, vegetables, cakes, and candies every November. After the
monkeys are given the treats, teenagers dressed up as monkeys perform
dances. The festival first took place in 1989, run by a local businessman
to boost tourism in Lopburi. Luckily for him and the monkeys, it
worked.
The Boryeong Mud Festival — Boryeong, South Korea
The festival first took place in 1998, and it was originally created
as a marketing event for Boryeong mud cosmetics (化妆品). The mud
from Boryeong is considered rich in natural minerals and is used to
make beauty products. Popular activities include mud swimming, mud
slides and mud skiing.
The La Tomatina Festival — Bu ol, Valencia, Spain
The festival has been organized annually in August in Bu?ol since
1940s, when a noisy crowd take the tomatoes from a vegetable stall and
start a food fight. The hour-long tomato fight used up about 145,000 kg

(人与自然|新高考4年8考)Jordan Karambelas, a junior at Mira
Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, started a Permaculture Club at
school in 2022 to make her fellow students more aware of ways to
grow food "in harmony with nature" and chose the aquaponics
(鱼菜共生) project as a way to promote the message. The aquaponics
project is a system that uses recycled water rich in fish poop(粪便)
to water vegetables planted above.
Her work was encouraged by Mike Garcia, who had spent decades
working on methods of saving and recycling water. With Garcia's help,
they completed the project in a weekend, building a handsome two-tiered,
4-by-8-foot redwood structure in one of the school's courtyards that
would easily fit in a front yard or even a balcony.
Many of the materials were given away, Karambelas said, but it
would have cost her about ?$1,500 to build the structure at full price.
The materials included 26 redwood boards, pond liners, Arqlite Smart
Gravel made from recycled food-safe plastics, 40 small goldfish and an
Oase AquaMax Eco Classic 3600 pump, which Garcia suggested because
of its low energy use.
The lower box is covered with pond liners, filled with water and
the little fish. Garcia helped set up the pump, which pushes the water
from the fish tier to the vegetables planted above. Rainwater falls back
into the fish tank, keeping the water aerated(透气). If the water level
gets too low in the fish tank, the pump draws from the city water. The
process keeps going round and round.
Students' reaction had been positive, Karambelas said, and she was
hoping the project could create enough interest to attract more members
to her new club the next year. "It's important for students to know about
this because a lot of people don't have land, and this can be done
anywhere," she said.

[2024重庆巴蜀中学期末考试]Slow-paced city-walk is becoming
popular across China. Rather than rushing past overcrowded tourist
landmarks, the new trend has become a popular option of exploring
bustling markets, ancient streets, and charming alleys(小巷) at a
leisurely pace.
City-walk appeals particularly to the younger generation often caught
up in demanding work schedules. As evidenced by the increasing
popularity of hashtags(主题标签) like "City-walk for vacation" on one
lifestyle sharing platform Xiaohongshu, with staggering 465 million views,
the trend is truly capturing unbelievable attention.
City-walk, or wandering around the urban landscapes, means the act
of walking freely along city streets without thorough plans. It offers
people an approach to intimately experiencing urban culture and local
traditions. City-walk is not merely about sightseeing. It creates an
opportunity for social interactions and deep connections with the cities.
City-walk routes are tailored to(为……专门制作) the specific interests
of both out-of-town tourists and locals. For tourists, the focus is on
sharing local customs and traditions, while for locals, discussions focus
on the city's past, present, and future. The growing trend of city-walk
reflects a changing attitude towards life, people embracing a warmer,
slower-paced, and more relaxed lifestyle.
As city-walk expands beyond first-tier cities like Beijing, Shanghai,
and Guangzhou, to second- and third-tier cities across the country, it
brings fresh opportunities for the tourism industry, in such areas as
dining, shopping, and accommodations.
Governments in Beijing and Shandong have recognized the potential
of city-walk, incorporating it into their action plans to promote cultural
tourism and leisure activities. In Shanghai, public bus lines specially
designed have been introduced to increase the overall city-walk of
participants.
"By slowing down and going deep into the narrow alleys, observing
the lives of city residents, and making oneself fully involved in the
context of museums and art galleries, one has the right to embrace the
pleasure of life," said Luo Jun, a cultural tourism enthusiast.

高考变式题We are often so attracted by the promise of modern
digital life that we fail to notice its danger. It's that feeling of losing
control that we get many times a day, from when we get distracted
(心神不定的)by our phones in a discussion to when we can't enjoy a
private moment without sharing it with the virtual audience.
In my first attempt to get control over my technology use, I set my
phone to vibrate(使震动) rather than ring. Soon after, another problem
appeared. The act of continually checking the phone became a habit. I
knew then that using only tips to change digital life was difficult. We
should go past the notification settings on our phones or apps and
consider the more important topic of why we used so many apps in the
first place. What all of us who are struggling with these challenges need
is a philosophy of technology use, something that explains from the
ground up which digital tools we allow into our lives, why, and under
what conditions.
Cal Newport, a professor of computer science, defines Digital
Minimalism (极简主义) as "a philosophy of technology use in which
you focus your online time on a small number of carefully selected
activities that strongly support the things you value, and then happily
miss out on everything else".
To do so, however, we cannot allow the tools or apps provided by
the Internet age to control how we spend our time or how we feel.
Instead, we must take steps to draw the positive parts of these
technologies and avoid the negative parts.

Daniel and Lucas are twins. They are teenagers, studying in the
same class. Their teenage life is rich and colorful. Tony is their grandpa,
whose age is 70 this year. The two grandsons like to take exercise with
their grandpa and even go out on adventures.
In the summer of last year, they paid a visit to Stone Mountain
Park with their grandpa. They had the opportunity to spend the day with
their grandpa, seeing the various beautiful sights and attractions. One
thing that three of them had really desired to do was climb to the top
of the mountain. Stone Mountain isn't a very high mountain and
fortunately there are some walking routes to the top of it, but for the
two teenagers, along with a rather old grandpa, it's a difficult task.
Daniel and Lucas were much more interested in the walk than their
grandpa, and they viewed it as an exciting adventure. But climbing the
mountain was a rather big challenge for Tony, who was old and thin. He
decided to walk slowly up to the mountain.
It seemed as if it had taken Tony forever to climb just a short
distance, but considering his personal safety, he had to remind himself
that his two steps equal his grandsons' one step. When he walked closer
to his grandsons, he had to stop for a while to regain energy, and then
tried to catch up with them, over and over again.
Tony was very tired. He just wanted to arrive at the top of the
mountain as soon as possible to enjoy the beauty of the mountain top.
But the twin grandsons didn't focus their attention on the trail at all
when climbing the mountain. On the contrary, they were simply enjoying
the journey of the walk. They enjoyed all that they had seen and all
that they had heard along the way up to the top of the mountain. They
stopped now and then to look at every large rock and observe the
unusual plants. Suddenly, they found a strange plant. Daniel called out,
"Grandpa, here is a special e and have a look."
