Who is the greatest teacher in Chinese history Many people would think of Confucius (孔子), whose birthday was September 28. Although he lived over 2,000 years ago, people still remember and respect him for his contribution (贡献) to the education today.
Confucius lived in the Kingdom of Lu, which lies in Shandong Province. He lived during the Spring and Autumn Period. He had a hard childhood. His father died when he was only 3. His mother brought him up. As a child, he had to work to help his mother, but young Confucius didn't give up studying. He visited many famous teachers and learned music, history, poetry and sports.

Progress means the act of going forward. Making any kind of progress can make us healthy and happy in life. By setting and actively working towards our goals, we can make progress in our life.
To make more progress in life, start looking at problems in a different way. Whatever happens, if we think positively, we can make more progress and become stronger.
Having confidence (信心) is helpful for us to make progress. Confidence comes from different places, such as proper education.
Slow progress is still progress. Just as the old saying goes, “It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.” Progress usually comes a lot more slowly than we expect. Even if progress is slow, try not to be worried. One important thing is that we keep taking steps towards our goals.
The road to progress is not always smooth. Most progress often comes with setbacks along the way. Sometimes, maybe it feels like we’re taking one step forward and three steps back, but it won’t always be like that. Keep going towards our goals and we can much more easily make the progress we want.

Feel sad Hug a tree! Recently, many Chinese young people turn to trees to help with their problems. Maybe it sounds strange, but there’s a science behind the tree-hugging.
The “biophilia hypothesis (亲生命假说)” tells us the reason. It was from US scientist Edward Wilson in 1984. He said that our humans (人类) are born to love being around other living things. Humans’ love for nature (自然) is “in our DNA”. This idea helps us know about why people choose green, natural places instead of city views. It’s also one of the reasons why people love cute pets.
Some studies show why tree-hugging can help with our health. A study in 2021 reported that the activity can increase oxytocin (催产素). It has something to do with our feelings. The higher the level (水平) of oxytocin is, the happier you may be. Hugging trees for only 21 seconds can bring more oxytocin in our body.
What’s more, when a person is angry, sad or very anxious, more cortisol (皮质醇) come out. Hugging trees helps make cortisol less and less, which makes us feel better.
The activity is helpful to us, but it’s important to remember that we shouldn’t hurt nature when doing it. Trees are important because many small animals live on the trees. You may want to be gentle when hugging trees — just like how you hug a friend!
36. What do people love according to Paragraph 2
A People love planting trees. B. People like living in modern cities.
C. People like doing exercise. D. People love staying in green places.
37. What does the word increase in Paragraph 3 mean
A. make something more B. make something less
C. make something better D. make something worse
38. According to the article, which of the following is true
A. We should plant more trees for the small animals.
B. We may feel sadder with a lower level of cortisol.
C. Hugging friends is much better than hugging trees.
D. We may be happier with a higher level of oxytocin.
39. How does this article show its idea
① By telling a story. ② By using numbers.
③ By giving reasons. ④ By showing some studies.
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ②③④ D. ①②③④
40. What does the article mainly tell us
A. We should not hurt trees and animals in nature.
B. There are many ways to feel happy and relaxed.
C. We should plant more trees to have green views.
D. Hugging trees in the right way helps us feel better.

China’s 15-year-old Chen Ye won gold (金牌) in the men’s park final of skateboarding (滑板男子碗池决赛) at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou on Sept 25, 2023.
Chen started getting into skateboarding in 2016 and he showed great interest in it. “I remember one day I went to a sports store, and by chance, I saw a skateboard. I decided to give it a try,” Chen told China Youth Daily. It was really hard to stay on the board at first, but Chen found it very interesting. “Every time I did some difficult skills, I felt the joy of making breakthroughs (突破),” said Chen.
Gradually, Chen needed a better skatepark (滑板场) for training. To meet the need, his father decided to make a skate bowl himself. “He would work on it late into the night, sometimes until three or four in the morning,” said Chen. “I’m really thankful for my father’s support.”
As a junior high school student, Chen needs to find a balance (平衡) between his study and skateboarding. He can be free from PE classes, during which he can do schoolwork because he needs to practice skateboarding for hours after his school is over.
Behind his success (成功) is too many times of hard practice and learning. He practices in the morning, studies in the afternoon and sometimes has to have extra (额外的) classes with the teachers’ help. While getting ready for the competition this year, Chen even disagreed with his father over his study plan. He wanted to train for more hours at night after daytime classes.
Looking back at the seven years of learning skating, Chen says he becomes stronger and more determined (坚定的) to do something he truly loves.

五、书面表达(满分10分)
【答案】Dear Editor,
I am glad to tell you something about the after—school services and the practical activities in our school.
We have many new classes and projects to help us learn better and grow. After school, we can join different clubs like art, sports, or music. I like the science club because we get to do fun experiments. There are also special classes to help us with homework and studying. This is good because it helps us learn more and feel less stressed.
We also have community service activities where we help people in need. It feels good to give back and learn about caring for others. Our school wants us to learn not only from books but also by doing things ourselves.
Overall, these changes make school more enjoyable and help us develop in many ways.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
