What Is a Tornado
A tornado is a rotating column of air(旋转气柱) from a thunderstorm(雷暴)
to the ground. The most violent have winds of more than 400 kilometres per
hour. Almost all of them occur in the US, in the area from Texas in the
southeast to South Dakota in the north.
Tornadoes can pick up cars, trains and even houses and put them down in
the next street—or even in the next town. They can destroy houses, but leave
the objects inside exactly where it was ("leave+宾语+宾补"结构, 宾语为the
where it was是where引导的地点状语
In the US, the worst tornado of all time happened in 1925. It influenced
three US states: Missouri, Illinois and Indiana. By the time it ended, more than
700 people had been killed and 2,700 had been injured.
What Is a Hurricane
Hurricanes are strong tropical storms, and they usually occur in the southern
Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. There are violent winds
of 120 kilometres per hour or more,( which cause huge waves . ., heavy rain and
.There are on average six
Atlantic hurricanes each year and they usually influence the east coast of the US
from Texas to Maine.
The worst hurricane of all time occurred on the 8th September 1900 in
Galveston, Texas. Winds of 200 kilometres per hour and five-metre-high waves hit
the city. The hurricane killed 6,000 people in a population of 37,000 and destroyed
3,600 buildings.

Describe a natural disaster
Work in pairs. Discuss what can happen to a city during a big earthquake.
Look at the title and photo below and guess what the text is about. Then
read and check if you are right.
THE NIGHT THE EARTHDIDN'T SLEEP([
Strange things were happening in the countryside of northeastern Hebei. For
several days, the water in the village wells rose and fell ,rose and
fell. There were deep cracks that appearedin the well walls(that引导的定语
. At least one well had some
smelly gas coming out of it(动词-ing短语作后置定语,修饰gas。). Chickens
and even pigs were too nervous to eat(too...to... 太……而不能……),and dogs
refused to go inside buildings. Mice ran out of the fields looking for places to hide
, and fish
jumped out of the water. At about 3:00 a.m., on 28 July 1976, bright lights were
seen in the sky outside the city of Tangshan and loud noises were heard. But the
city's one million people were asleep as usual that night.
At 3:42 a.m., everything began to shake. It seemed as if . .the world were
coming. .to an end !([句型]It seemed as if...
Eleven
kilometres directly below the city, one of the most deadly earthquakes of the
20th century had begun, a quake that even caused damage more than 150
kilometres away in Beijing("one...earthquakes of the 20th century" 的同位语,其
中that引导定语从句,修饰先行词a quake,that在从句中作主语。). Nearly one
third of the whole nation felt it! A huge crack, eight kilometres long and 30
metres wide, cut across houses, roads, and waterways .
Hard hills of rock became rivers of dirt([修辞手法]此处使用了隐喻(metaphor)
. In less than one
minute, a large city lay in ruins . Twothirds of the people who lived therewere
此处were与people
dead or injured. Thousands of children were left without parents("leave+宾语+宾补
The number of people who were killed or badly injured in
the quake([思考]此处who引导什么类型的从句呢?) was more than 400,000.
Everywhere survivors . .looked, (Everywhere
there was nothing but ruins([句型]There was/is nothing but...
. Nearly
everything in the city was destroyed. About 75 percent of the city's factories
and buildings, 90 percent of its homes, and all of its hospitals were gone .
Bricks . .covered the ground like red autumn leaves([
明喻不同于隐喻,它直接在句子中使用like,as,as...as...
, but no wind could blow them
away. Most bridges had fallen or . .were not safe. .to cross.([句型]主语+be+adj.
(+for sb.) The railway tracks were now useless pieces of
metal . Tens of thousands of cows, hundreds of thousands of pigs, and millions of
chickens were dead. Sand now filled the wells instead of water. People were in
shock —and then, later that afternoon, another big quake shook Tangshan again.
Even more buildings fell down. Water, food, and electricity were hard to get.
People began to wonder how long the
disaster would last(how引导的宾语从句,作wonder 的宾语。).
But hope was not lost. Soon after the quakes, the army sent 150,000 soldiers
to Tangshan to dig out. .those who were. .trapped. .and to. .bury. .the dead
those。 . More than 10,000
doctors and nurses came to provide medical care . Workers built shelters for
. Hundreds of thousands of people
were helped. Water and food were brought into the city by train, truck, and plane.
Slowly, the city began to.
breathe
again.
Tangshan started to revive itself and get back up on its feet ([
With strong support from the government and the tireless efforts of the
city's people, a new Tangshan was built upon the earthquake ruins. The new city
has become a home to more than seven million people, with great improvements
in transportation, industry, and environment. Tangshan city has proved to China and
the rest of the world that in times of disaster, people must unify and show
the wisdom to stay positive and rebuild for a brighter future.(that引导的宾语

For many people, barbecues are a chance to enjoy a meal with their family
and friends. For Stan Hays, however, barbecuing becomes his skill to feed people
in need when the disaster happens.
The unique effort began in May, when a serious tornado hit Joplin, about two
hours' drive from Hays' home. His wife asked him to help. So, he put out the
word to his partners and headed there with his barbecue. "We thought we'd be
there three to four days, serving maybe 5,000 meals," Hays said. But the need was
there, so Hays and over 300 volunteers worked for 11 days to meet the need.
It was a life-changing experience for Hays, who had never organized any types
of large voluntary effort before. While preparing to head home, he and his friends
Will Cleaver and Jeff Stith came to the realization. "A barbecue community is able
to respond to disasters like this quickly," Hays said. "So, before we left, we put
forward a plan to create the Operation BBQ Relief."
During the last six years, the group has responded to almost 45 disasters
across the United States, including Hurricanes Harvey and Irma and the wildfires in
northern California. More than 6,800 volunteers have joined the effort, and the
group often partners other organizations to serve the meals.
"Barbecues are comfort food," Hays said."If you just lost your house or a
loved one, getting a hot meal would remind you of the barbecues you had in the
backyard and make you forget about the bad things in your life. That's worth it to
me."
