Gloria is a famous hostess of a TV station. When she was 15, she happened to walk into a bookstore in her hometown and began looking at the books on the shelves. The storekeeper
asked if she'd like a job. She needed to save for college, so she said yes.
Gloria worked after school and during summer vacations, and the job helped pay for her first year of college. During college she would do many other jobs: she served coffee in the student union, was a hotel cleaner and even made maps for the Forest Service. But selling books was one of the most satisfying jobs.
One day a woman came into the bookstore and asked Gloria for books on cancer. The woman seemed worried. Gloria showed her practically everything they had and found other books they could order. The woman left the store less worded, and Gloria has always remembered the pride ( 自豪) she felt in having helped her customer (顾客).

Gloria persuaded (说明) her boss to agree to let her do the story. After the story was broadcast, some doctors called, offering to perform the operation for free.
Gloria visited the boy in the hospital after the operation. The first thing he did was to hold up his repaired hand and say, "Thank you." What a sweet sense of satisfaction Gloria felt!

Lu Xun is one of the greatest Chinese writers of the 20th century. Besides his famous stories, he also wrote many influential articles about the living conditions of Chinese people.
Born in 1881 to a wealthy family, Lu Xun had a happy childhood. In 1893, however, his grandfather, a senior government official, was put into prison for taking money. At the same time, his father became seriously ill. From that time on, his family were no longer accepted by their relatives and friends. These early experiences greatly influenced his writing.
By the time Lu Xun arrived in Nanjing to study at university in 1899, he already believed that Chinese society had to change and become modern. In 1902 he went to study in Japan. There, he began writing articles for several Chinese student magazines. He showed a gift for writing and translating and he even wrote several books, although none was popular. He returned to China in 1909 because he was in need of money.

This, together with his novel The True Story of Ah Q (1921), made Lu Xun a leading Chinese writer.
Although successful, Lu Xun still worried greatly about China’s future. In 1926, he moved to Shanghai and gave up writing stories in order to devote himself to what he called “pen warfare”. He now only wrote articles which called on the people to fight against the government. For this, the government stopped him from publishing any more books.
2.The Beijing 2022 Olympic Games gave the athletes a chance to go ________ cultural differences and work together for a better shared future.
A.into B.over C.beyond D.across
into进入;over在上方;beyond超过;across穿过(表面)。根据“go...cultural differences and work together for a better shared future”可知,此处表达跨越文化差异,go beyond“超过”,这里引申为跨越。故选C。

5.We cannot understand illness ________ we understand the person who has the illness.
A.because B.if C.after D.until
because因为;if如果;after在…… 根据“We cannot understand illness”可知,考查“not...until”结构,表示“直到……才”。故选D。
6.Gina studies hard and always gets good ________ on her exams.
A.scores B.exercises C.examples
【答案】A
故选A。

A.Although B.Realize C.Proper
【答案】A

【答案】A
A. until直到;B. if如果;C. as soon as一…就…;D. while当…时候。根据I waited for him all the morning,以及he came back from work.
9.—Did you catch the first bus to school this morning

A.after B.since C.before D.as soon as
after在……之后;since自从;before在……之前;as soon as一……就……。根据It had started moving ____I could get on it.

A.meet B.have met C.will meet D.met

A.whenever B.whatever C.however D.wherever

A.when B.unless C.since D.until
【答案】A
when当…… 故选A。
13.The workers didn't find ________ the computer and they asked us for help.
A.what is the matter with B.what the matter is with
C.what was the matter with D.what the matter was with
宾语从句需用陈述句语序,what was the matter with是陈述句语序,意思是“……
14.—It was ________ him that I got the job.
—Lucky you.
A.across B.above C.into D.through

Gloria is a famous hostess of a TV station. When she was 15, she happened to walk into a bookstore in her hometown and began looking at the books on the shelves. The storekeeper
