As night fell on the first day of the semester, I knew I should go to bed. Instead, I opened my laptop to revisit a difficult research problem that had been taking up my attention other tasks piled up. Something wasn't adding up in a vital data set, and I was under pressure to figure it out as quickly as possible. If I could just make a little headway before bed, I was sure I would sleep better and awake ready to tackle all those other tasks— lectures to polish, grants to write, emails to send. But it was not to be. My work was rushed and fruitless, and by the time I gave up, I had lost all but 3 hours of sleep. As a new assistant professor, I figured nights like this were just part of the job. But I' ve since learned that busy periods don't have to spin out of control.
So I decided to establish a scheduled reset for work. Every Saturday night through Monday morning, I would shut off all email notifications to my phone and strive to keep my laptop shut. I knew it wasn't much, but I thought the once-a- week commitment would be a possible starting point. Almost instantly, my Saturday night of disabling email notifications became a weekly highlight. I was able to keep my head clearer and more present on Sundays, which allowed me to enjoy time with family and engage with personal interests that nurtured(滋长) the nonwork parts of my identity. On Mondays, I found myself returning to the office with a sense of liveliness. The quality of my work improved during the day, giving me freedom to decide whether I wanted to continue with anything in the evening.
There were setbacks. Even today, there are times when I give work too much of my attention. But the weekly reset gives me a way to regain my balance quicker than I otherwise would.

26. What was the primary benefit the author got from the reset
A. It helped him maintain a clear mind and feel refreshed.
B. It reduced his overall stress and anxiety levels.

27. How did the author change to manage his work
A. He began to struggle with an unsustainable work pace.

Every time two people talk to each other, an opportunity for relationship growth is unfolding. Many times, that opportunity isn’t taken; we aren’t about to have an in-depth conversation with the waitress who asks for our order. But connect ion is always theoretically possible, and that’s true whether we’re interacting online or face-to-face.
Close relationships are the bread and butter of happiness — and even health. Lonelines s is a stronger predictor of death rate than smoking multiple cigarettes a day. If we want to understand the role technology plays in our well- being, we need to start with the role it plays in our relationships.
And it turns out that the technology- mediated interactions that lead to positive outcomes are exactly those that are likely to build stronger relationships. Spending your time online by scheduling interactions with people you see day in and day out seems to work out in increased social integration. However, using the Internet to make up for being lonely just makes you lonelier; using the Internet to actively seek out connection has the opposite effect.
Research has found that technology- mediated interactions that don’t really address our close relationships don’t seem to do us any good — and might, in fact, do us harm. Passively scrolling (刷屏) through your Facebook feed without interacting with people has been linked to decreased well- being and increased depression post- Facebook use.
That kind of passive usage is a good example of “social snacking”. Like eating junk food, social snacking can temporarily satisfy you, but it’s lacking in nutritional content. Looking at your friends’ posts without ever responding might make you feel more connected to them, but it doesn’t build relationships.
Passive engagement has a second downside as well: social comparison. When we compare our messy lived experiences to others’ selected self-presentations, we are likely to suffer from lowered self-esteem, happiness, and well- being. This effect is exacerbated when we consume people’s digital lives without interacting with them, making it all too easy to miss the less photogenic moments of their lives.
28. What does the example of the waitress imply
A. Waitresses are often disrespected. B. Public places enhance relationships.
C. Many relationship-building chances are lost D. In-depth conversations frequently take place.
29. What might be the result of making up for loneliness through the Internet
A. Loneliness will not be relieved. B. Interaction skills will improve.
C. More connections will be made. D. Relationships will be strengthened.
30. Which of the following is an exception to “social snacking”
A. Reading a friend’s posts in silence. B. Watching online videos constantly.
C. Checking Facebook to pass the time. D. Video chatting with Mom every weekend.
31. What does the underlined word “exacerbated” probably mean in the last paragraph
A. worsened B. weakened C. realized D. improved
D
Holding the large and heavy “brick” cellphone he’s credited with inventing 50 years ago,Martin Cooper talks about the future.
Little did he know when he made the first call on a New York City street from a heavy Motorola prototype(原型)that our world would come to be encapsulated on a sleek glass sheath where we search, connect, like and buy.
Cooper says he is an optimist. He believes that advances in mobile technology will continue to transform lives but he is worried about risks smartphones pose to privacy and young people.
“My most negative opinion is we don’t have any privacy anymore because everything about us is now recorded someplace and accessible to somebody who has enough intense desire to get it,” the 94-year-old said in an interview in Barcelona at MWC, the Mobile World Congress, the world’s biggest wireless trade show, where he was getting a lifetime award.
Cooper sees a dark side to the advances, including the risk to children. One idea, he said, is to have“various Internets intended for different audiences.”
Cooper made the first public call from a handheld portable telephone on a Manhattan street on April 3,1973,using a prototype device his team at Motorola had started designing just five months earlier.
Cooper used the Dyna-TAC phone to famously call his opponent at Bell Labs, owned by AT&T. It was literally the world’s first brick phone, weighing 2.5 pounds and measuring 11 inches.
Cooper spent the best part of the next decade working to bring a commercial version of the device to market.
The call helped kick-start the cellphone revolution (革命).
Cooper said he’s “not crazy” about the shape of modern smartphones. He thinks they will develop so that they’ll be “distributed on your body,” possibly as sensors“measuring your health at all times.”
Batteries, he said, might be replaced by human energy. The body makes energy from food,he argues, so it could possibly also power a phone.Instead of holding the phone in the hand, for example, the device could be placed under the skin.
32. What does the underlined part “a sleek glass sheath” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. A smartphone. B. A Motorola prototype.
C. A “brick” cellphone. D. An original cellphone.
33. What is Cooper’s attitude about the future of the mobile phone
A. Most negative. B. Very subjective.
C. Doubtful and Disapproving. D. Optimistic but also concerned.
34. What can be inferred about children from paragraph 5
A. They should be provided with a different Internet from adults.
B. They should have easy access to various Internets.
C. They should be introduced to different audiences.
D. They should use various Internets for learning materials.
35. According to Cooper, how might smartphones be powered in the future
A. By body sensors. B. By human body.
C. By solar energy. D. By advanced batteries.

How to Teach Respect
Respect is one of the most important, fundamental skills a child can ever learn. A sense of respect is important for succeeding in school, holding down a job, and having adult relationships. 36 . So it is parents' responsibility to teach their kids these skills.
You should set a good example to your kids. When it comes to teaching children respect, it all boils down to this. Children are easily affected by what they see. 37 . Live a kind, caring, respectful life and your children will learn that this is the way adults are expected to behave.
You should encourage activities that require sharing and cooperation. One of the reasons that respect is so important is that it's needed to form helpful friendships and relationships with others. Teach your children that respect allows them to build bridges by giving them fun opportunities to work with teammates and partners toward a mutual(共同的)goal. If they get rude, warn them. 38 .
You should control your own negative emotions. Children don't have the argumentative skills that adults do. 39 . Worse, it can teach them that it's OK to yell or threaten other people when they become frustrated. Show them that difficult situations are best conquered with a cool head.
40 . Patience is a sign of respect. It may take some children longer to learn how to behave respectfully around others. Becoming impatient with children only teaches them to become impatient people, so instead take time to explain the problem to your children.
A. You should be patient
B. If they keep it up, end the activity
C. You should read some stories about respect to your kids
D. Using your own behavior to teach your kids needs much time
E. The number one place that children learn respect is in the home
F. Losing your temper can be a scary, confusing experience for them
G. In addition, they naturally look up to their parents and imitate them

In June’s room stands a bright blue clay vase. Not a perfect or beautiful vase, it is broken in several places. It has been mended, but spiderlike cracks (裂痕) remain. It tells a story of two girls’ friendship.
Amy and June met on a plane returning from Bangkok, where their fathers, business partners, attended meetings. June sat behind Amy. Midway, Amy hesitantly turned around and gave June a bright blue clay vase. It was a small gesture, but a simple friendship between two 4-year-olds was established.
Years flew by. Amy and June grew up together, played together, studied together and became each other’s closest friend.
However, people change as they grow up. Even the most special friendships can be destroyed. As Amy’s interest s broadened, she started to see loss and loss of June. Though hurt, Jun e tried to be understanding. She was still there for Amy when Amy needed support. But when she tried to bring up her difficulties, Amy brushed her off by saying, “Later.”
June couldn’t take it anymore. So one day she invited Amy to her house, hoping to figure their problem out. Instead, a terrible quarrel broke out. “What am I to you Your friend or just your little dog ” June cried. To her shock, Amy was defensive and screamed back.
“June, I hate you!” With these words, Amy stormed out of June’s room, shutting the door hard behind her. A blue vase on the shelf jumped and fell onto the floor, crashing into several pieces. A friendship of ten years was broken, just like the vase.
One year passed. It was June’s fifteenth birthday. Instead of feeling happy, June only felt depressed. She remembered her fourteenth birthday. It’d been a great one, and they’d been so happy. Bittersweet tears filled June’s eyes. She could still remember the image of four- year-old Amy holding out the blue vase to her. Suddenly, the doorbell rang. June jumped up and rushed to open the door.

第二节(满分25分)
【答案】At the doorstep stood Amy, holding a small package. Amy looked nervous and hesitant, but she managed a small smile. “Happy birthday, June,” she said softly. June was taken aback but quickly stepped aside to let Amy in. They stood awkwardly for a moment before Amy handed over the package. “I know we haven’t talked in a while, but I wanted to give you this,” Amy said, her voice trembling slightly. June took the package, feeling a mix of emotions. A few minutes,Amy left.
Going to her room, June sat down on her bed and opened the gift. It was a notebook. Attached to it was a note that read, “Dear June, I'm sorry. I hope we can still be best friends” June finally felt relieved. She called Amy and then they decided to repair the vase together. That's why the vase told the story of two girls and a friendship.

W: (15) I’ll go this afternoon. Shall I take her some chocolate
M: She doesn’t feel like eating much.
W: I’ll get her some magazines then. The latest sports magazine has been out.
M: That’d be great!
W: I’m Lee Minwoo from South Korea. (17) When I was little I was very interested in English. I learned English at school. There was a good teacher who was not a native English speaker. He taught French and German, but he really spoke English quite well. It was funny because I was the only student in his class—it was really a private lesson. I had an excellent course book. I still keep a copy of it. The front cover was red with a lovely picture, and (18) it was very modern. Learning English was quite easy for me because the teacher was so good and he helped a lot. Also, (20) I’m quite good at learning languages. (19) It was really enjoyable to have classes. I loved the sound of the words. I felt really proud when my spelling improved day by day and I could read a short story. In middle school, English was still my favorite subject. I even stayed in America for one year as an exchange student. I learned a lot there, not only English but different cultures.
