What is eBay? The simple answer is that it is a global trading platform where nearly anyone can trade practically anything. People can sell and buy all kinds of products and goods, including cars, movies and DVDs, sporting goods, travel tickets, musical instruments, clothes and shoes — the list goes on and on.
The idea came from Pierre Omidyar, who was born in Paris and moved to Washington when he was still a child. At high school, he became very interested in computer programming and after graduating from Tufts University in 1988, he worked for the next few years as a computer engineer. In his free time he started eBay as a kind of hobby, at first offering the service free by word of mouth. By 1996 there was so much traffic on the website that he had to upgrade (升级) and he began charging a fee to members. Joined by a friend, Peter Skoll, and in 1998 by his capable CEO, Meg Whitman, he has never looked back. Even in the great. com crashes of the late 1990s, eBay has gone from strength to strength. It is now one of the ten most visited online shopping websites on the Internet.
eBay sells connections, not goods, putting buyer and seller into contact with each other. All you have to do is to take an e-photo, write a description, fill out a sales form and you are in business; the world is your market place. Of course for each item (商品)sold eBay gets a percentage and that is a great deal of money. Every day there are more than sixteen million items listed on eBay and eighty percent of the items are sold.

Ⅴ.阅读理解
We know the famous ones—the Thomas Edisons and the Alexander Graham Bells—but what about the less famous inventors? What about the people who invented the traffic light and the windshield wiper (雨刮器)? Shouldn't we know who they are?
Joan McLean thinks so. In fact, McLean, a professor of physics at Mountain University in Range, feels so strongly about this matter that she's developed a course on the topic. In addition to learning “who” invented “what”, however, McLean also likes her students to learn the answers to the “why” and “how” questions. According to McLean, “When students learn the answers to these questions, they are better prepared to recognize opportunities for inventing and more motivated to give inventing a try.”
Her students agree. One young man with a patent for an unbreakable umbrella is walking proof of McLean's statement. “If I had not heard the story of the windshield wiper's invention,” said Tommy Lee, a senior physics major, “I never would have dreamed of turning my bad experience during a rainstorm into something so constructive.” Lee is currently negotiating to sell his patent to an umbrella producer.
So,just what is the story behind the windshield wiper? Well,Mary Anderson came up with the idea in 1902 after a visit to New York City. The day was cold and stormy, but Anderson still wanted to see the sights, so she jumped aboard a streetcar. Noticing that the driver was struggling to see through the snow covering the windshield, she found herself wondering why there couldn't be a built-in device for cleaning the window. Still wondering about this when she returned home to Birmingham, Alabama, Anderson started drafting out solutions. One of her ideas,a lever (操作杆) on the inside of a vehicle that would control an arm on the outside, became the first windshield wiper.
Today we benefit from countless inventions and innovations. It's hard to imagine driving without Garrett A. Morgan's traffic light. It's equally impossible to picture a world without Katherine J. Blodgett's innovation that makes glass invisible. Can you picture life without clear windows and eyeglasses?
1.By mentioning “traffic light” and “windshield wiper”, the author indicates that countless inventions are ________.
A.beneficial,because their inventors are famous
B.beneficial, though their inventors are less famous
C.not useful, because their inventors are less famous

B.inform students of the windshield wiper's invention
C.carry out the requirements by Mountain University

3.Tommy Lee's invention of the unbreakable umbrella was ________.
A.not eventually accepted by the umbrella producer
B.inspired by the story behind the windshield wiper
C.due to his dream of being caught in a rainstorm
D.not related to Professor Joan McLean's lectures
4.Which of the following can best serve as the title of this passage?
A.How to Help Students to Sell Their Inventions to Producers?
B.How to Design a Built-in Device for Cleaning the Window?
C.Shouldn't We Know Who Invented the Windshield Wiper?

Electric cars are dirty. In fact, not only are they dirty, they might even be dirtier than their gasoline-powered cousins.
People in California love to talk about “zero-emissions (排放) vehicles”, but people in California seem to be_clueless_about where electricity comes from. Power plants most all use fire to make it. Apart from the few people who have their roofs covered with solar cells, we get our electricity from generators (发电机). Generators are fueled by something—usually coal, oil, but also by heat generated in nuclear power plants. There are a few wind farms and geothermal (地热) plants as well, but by far we get electricity mainly by burning something.
In other words, those “zero-emissions” cars are likely coalburning cars. Because the coal is burned somewhere else, it looks clean. It is not true. It's as if the California Greens are covering their eyes—“If I can't see it,it's not happening.” Gasoline is an incredibly efficient way to power a vehicle; a gallon of gas has a lot of energy in it. But when you take that gas (or another fuel) and first use it to make electricity, you waste a nice part of that energy, mostly in the form of wasted heat—at the generator, through the transmission lines, etc..
A gallon of gas may drive your car 25 miles. But the electricity you get from that gallon of gas won't get you nearly as far, so electric cars burn more fuel than gasoline-powered ones. If our electricity came mostly from wind or geothermal ,or solar, then an electric car truly would be clean. But for political, technical, and economic reasons, we don't use much of those energy sources.
In addition, electric cars' batteries which are poisonous for a long time will eventually end up in a landfill. And finally, when cars are the polluters, the pollution is spread across all the roads. When it's a power plant, though, all the junk is in one place. Nature is very good at cleaning up when things are not too concentrated, but it takes a lot longer when all the garbage is in one spot.
1.What's the main idea of the passage?
A.Electric cars aren't actually clean.
B.Electric cars are zero-emissions vehicles.
C.Zero-emissions vehicles are popular.
D.Gasoline-powered cars are more efficient.
2.Which of the following words can replace “be clueless about” in Paragraph 2?
A.be familiar with B.be curious about
C.fail to understand D.show their interest in
3.In the author's opinion, compared with cars using gas, electric cars are more ________.
A.environmentally friendly
B.expensive
C.efficient
D.harmful
4.It can be inferred from the passage that ________.
A.electric cars' batteries are poisonous for a long time
B.now electric cars are used more than their gasoline-powered cousins
C.zero-emissions vehicles should be chosen to protect our environment
D.electric cars are not clean in that we get electricity mainly by burning something
答案:A
B
As we know,it's the beginning of the end for TV. Apple has released Apple TV, a tiny white box that connects the shows and movies you've downloaded from the computer, and wirelessly (无线的) sends them to your TV screen.
No longer will you have to pay a monthly fee to your cable (有线的) company to watch your favourite show. Apple's iTunes has made it possible to download a TV show for about $2,keep it stored on your computer and watch it whenever you want. It's a blow to the cable networks, which offer services that are often expensive and make hundreds of channels and thousands of shows nothing to watch.
American networks have gone one step further, allowing audiences to watch their shows for free online. If the cable companies don't keep up with technology, we'll soon be giving them up.
“This is the biggest kind of entertainment in history,” says Colin Dixon, “I don't think that traditional broadcasts—cable and satellite—are going away tomorrow, but they must change to keep market share.”
The Internet changes businesses at an unbelievable speed. Now it's happening with video. Canadians are being kept behind the times. Some Canadian channels are starting to follow American companies. Global offered Survivor: Cook Islands online, and CTV is doing the same for Degrassi: The Next Generation. And cable companies say that video on demand and personal video recording technology can compete with the Net.
“You watch when you want it,” says Michael Lee, adding that the Net doesn't give viewers the opportunity to just sit on the couch and flip (翻阅) through channels.
However, it takes time.
“Up until this year even the US sites didn't offer a lot of online content. We've seen an explosion of it this fall,” she says.

Text 10
Different countries and different people have different manners. We must find out their customs so that they will not think us ill mannered. Here are examples of the things that a person with good manners does or does not do. If you visit a Chinese family, you should knock at the door first. When the door opens, you will not move before the host says “Come in,please”. After you enter the room, you would not sit down until the host asks you to take a seat. When a cup of tea is put on a tea table before you or sent to your hand, you will say “Thank you.” and receive it with two hands, not one hand,or they will think you are ill mannered. Before entering a house in Japan, it is a good manner to take off your shoes. In European countries, even though shoes sometimes become very dirty, this is not done. In a Malay house,a visitor never finishes the food on the table. He leaves a little to show that he has had enough. In England,a visitor always finishes a drink or the food to show that he has enjoyed it. This will make the host pleasant.

第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

If parents bring up a child with the aim of turning the child into a genius, they will cause great damage to him. According to several leading educational experts, this is one of the biggest mistakes that some parents make. Generally, the child will understand very well what the parents expect, and will fall. Unrealistic(不现实) expectations of the parents can cause great damage to children.
However, if parents are not unrealistic about what they expect their children to do, but are hopeful in a sensible(明智) way, the child may succeed in doing very well—especially if the parents are very supportive to their children.
Michael Li is very lucky. He is very fond of music and his parents help him a lot by taking him to concerts and let him attend piano and violin lessons. Although Michael' s mother knows very little about music, his father is a good musician. However, he never makes Michael enter music competitions if he is unwilling.
Michael's friend, Winston Chen, however, is not so lucky. Although both his parents are successful musicians, they set too high a standard for Winston. They want their son to be as successful as they are and so they enter him in every piano competition held. They are very unhappy when he does not win. “When I was your age I used to win every competition I enter.” Winston's father tells him. Winston is always afraid that he will disappoint his parents and now he always quiet and unhappy.

China is a land of bicycles. At least it was back in 1992 when I traveled the country. Back then everyone seemed to be riding a bicycle. Millions of them, all black. Cars were rare. Yet since my arrival in Beijing last year, I've found the opposite is true. There are millions of cars. However, people still use their bicycles to get around. For many, it's the easiest and cheapest way to travel today. Bicycles also come in different colors — silver, green, red, blue, yellow, whatever you want.
It's fun watching people biking. They rush quickly through crossroads, move skillfully through traffic, and ride even on sidewalks(人行道). Bicycles allow people the freedom to move about that cars just can't provide.
Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture, I decided to buy a bicycle. Great weather accompanied my great buy. I immediately jumped up on my bicycle seat and started home.
My first ride home was orderly(守秩序的). To be safe, I stayed with a “pack” of bikers while cars on the streets came running swiftly out of nowhere at times. I didn't want to get hit. So I took the ride carefully.
Crossing the streets was the biggest problem. It was a lot like crossing a major highway back in the United States. The streets here were wide, so crossing took time, skill and a little bit of luck.
I finally made it home. The feeling on the bicycle was amazing. The air hitting my face and going through my hair was wonderful. I was sitting on top of the world as I passed by places and people. Biking made me feel alive.

A.It was boring. B.It was difficult.
C.It was lively. D.It was wonderful.
28.Which of the following best describes the author's biking experience?
A.The author enjoyed showing off his biking skills.
B.The author was annoyed by the air while riding.

It is quite reasonable to blame traffic jams, the cost of gas and the great speed of modern life, but manners on the road are becoming horrible. Everybody knows that the nicest men would become fierce tigers behind the wheel. It is all right to have a tiger in a cage, but to have one in the driver's seat is another matter.
Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense, too. It takes the most cool-headed drivers great patience to give up the desire to beat back when forced to face rude driving. On the other hand, a little politeness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility of quarrelling and fighting. A friendly nod or a wave of thanks in answer to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of good will and calm so necessary in modern traffic conditions. But such behaviors of politeness are by no means enough. Many drivers nowadays don't even seem able to recognise politeness when they see it.
However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous. Typical examples are the driver who waves a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path of oncoming cars that may be not able to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they want to.
An experienced driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if drivers learnt to correctly join in traffic stream without causing total blockages that gave rise to unpleasant feelings. Unfortunately, modern drivers can't even learn to drive, let alone master the roadman ship. Years ago, experts warned us that the fast increase of the car ownership would demand more give-and-take from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.
29.The passage mainly talks about ________.
A.road politeness B.traffic jams
C.good manners D.modern drivers
30.Troubles on the road are often caused by ________.
A.traffic jams
B.the behavior of the drivers

D.terrible road conditions
31.According to the writer, a good driver should ______.
A.beat back when forced to face rude driving
B.be able to recognise politeness when he sees it
C.encourage old ladies to cross the roads whenever they want to
D.join in traffic stream quickly however other people feel

Mickey Mouse wants to help kids kick the junk food habit. The Walt Disney Company announced that it plans to advertise only healthier food to kids.
By 2015, all food and drink products that are advertised on its TV channels, radio stations and websites will have to meet the company's nutrition standard for limiting calories and reducing fat, sodium and sugar. Many food, such as fruit drinks, candy and snack cakes, won't meet the standard.
First Lady Michelle Obama called it a “game changer”. “Disney is doing what no major media company has ever done before in the US and what I hope every company will do in the future.”
“This is a landmark (里程碑), because a major media company is taking responsibility for what food they advertise to children,” says Margo Wootan, director of nutrition policy for the Center for Science in the Public Interest. “This should be a real wake-up call to Nickelodeon (an American children's channel) and the Cartoon Network to do the same.”
But the company will still be able to advertise “better-for-you versions (种类) of products that are not perfectly nutritious.” Under the new standards, breakfast cereals that are advertised will have to contain fewer than 10 grams of sugar in a serving,Wootan says. “That's a good step forward, but it's not perfectly nutritious.”
Jon Leibowitz, chairman of the Federal Trade Commission, says Disney is making this move “at perhaps some risk of affecting their incomes,so that's why we should praise them.”
“Food marketing is really important because it shapes the way kids are fed,” Wootan says. “If we don't deal with food marketing to kids, we don't have any chance of addressing childhood obesity.”
Currently,a third of children are overweight, putting them at a greater risk for serious health problems.
At its theme parks, Disney began offering healthier kids' meals serving carrots and other vegetables, fruit, low-fat milk and yogurt at meals, instead of fries and soft drinks.

A.the wake-up call

33.What does Margo Wootan think of Disney's new move?
A.He thinks it is a risk.
B.He thinks very highly of it.
C.He thinks it will get wide support.
D.He thinks it will affect their incomes.
34.According to Disney's new standards, ________.
A.soft drinks are not allowed to be advertised
B.food that is advertised should be fat-free
C.only perfectly nutritious products can be advertised
D.food advertised should contain fewer than 10 grams of sugar
35.What is the main idea of the text?
A.Disney calls for a ban on junk food.
B.Disney aims to help kids lose weight.
C.Disney is to serve healthier food for kids.
D.Disney is to quit taking ads for junk food aimed at kids.

范文:
Dear_Mr._Hans,
I really regret to say that I can't attend the lecture to share thoughts about Frog by Mo Yan in your apartment this Saturday afternoon, and I'm writing this letter to express my deep regret.
The reason for my absence is that I have to meet an English teacher from Australia at the airport this Saturday afternoon. The plane is due to arrive then and it is impossible to rearrange my time. It is really a pity that I will miss such a valuable opportunity to share my thoughts about Frog with you.
I wondered if you could send me a summary of the discussion next Monday, for I believe it will be very interesting. I promise to return it as soon as possible.
I'm truly sorry for my absence and hope you will accept my apologies. Thank you!
Best_wishes.
Yours,
Li_Hua
