①古时候，老北京城里发生了一场奇怪的瘟疫，几乎家家都有人染上了重病，一旦病了就无药可医，郎中们一个个束手无策。一时间京城的老百姓死难无数，到处是一片凄惨的景象。嫦娥在月宫里看到此情景，心里十分难过，就派月宫中捣药的玉兔下界去为百姓们治病。得了嫦娥的令旗，玉兔带着捣好的药材来到了民间。
兔爷的传说
②授命下凡解救众生的玉兔，为了融入凡间，更好地实施救治，变成了人形再去送药。
玉兔挨家挨户地走，很快治好了很多人。为了尽早结束老百姓的苦难，地上的老虎、大象、梅花鹿、天上的麒麟等各种动物们都来帮助玉兔，日夜载着玉兔东奔西走，玉兔在大伙的齐心帮助下很快消除了京城内外的瘟疫，回月宫去了。
③百姓们都知道是玉兔帮助了他们，为了感激玉兔的恩德，就请能工巧匠用泥塑彩绘做成玉兔的样子供奉在堂前，尊称为：“兔儿爷”，
逢年过节或有喜事的日子会摆上新鲜的果蔬五谷供奉祭拜，在老百姓心里兔儿爷会保佑全家平安吉祥，是幸福平安的守护之神。
