The teaching objectives of Starting out:

Lead-in
Hello,everybody! So happy to see all of you here! Today we will begin Unit 1 Laugh out loud and in this class we will deal with Starting out and Understanding ideas. Please look at the title of Unit 1 and tell me when you will laugh out loud.Yes, when you feel happy or when you watch something funny. Some people like watching comedies because the humor and the happy ending make them laugh out loud. In Starting out, we will learn more about comedy.
Starting out
We have 3 activities in Starting out. Activity1, watch the video. While watching, please focus on what forms of comedy are mentioned in the video.
Speaking of comedies, have you ever been to a comedy show Activity 2 is to share your experience with your partners. You have 3 minutes for this pair work.
Now let’s complete the questionnaire on page1 and find out if you are fun to be with. Please choose the answers according to your personality and then turn to page 107 to check your result. You have 2 minutes for this task.
Understanding ideas
There are 4 steps in Understanding ideas: Pre-reading, While-reading, Post-reading and homework.
Step1 pre-reading
We have 3 activities for this Step1, pre-reading . First, please appreciate the two pictures. How do you feel
Activity 2 is some questions.You can just stand up and answer my question. No.1 How do you feel when visiting hospitals No.2 How do you feel when seeing the face of a clown No.3 How do you feel when meeting a clown in the hospital
Activity3 is prediction. With the help of the title and the illustration, you can make predictions about the passage. The following questions can help you read the illustration. Question 1: Where is the clown Question 2: What is the clown doing Question 3: How do the girl and the woman feel The title is the best medicine. Can you predict the answer to the question: What is the best medicine?
Step2 While-reading
In the While-reading step. We have three levels. Level one is reading the lines, Level two is reading between the lines and Level three is reading beyond the lines. From level one to level 3, we dig the passage deeper and deeper.
For Level 1 reading the lines, you have to skim the passage in three minutes and complete the job advertisement. That’s an easy task.
For Level 2 reading between the lines, We have three activities. Activity 1, after skimming, choose the correct answers. Activity 2: Read the passage in 5 minutes and match the paragraph number with the key words. Activity 3: Following Activity 2, you are required to match the question with each paragraph and find the answer to each question.
For level 3 reading beyond the lines, we have two activities. Activity 1: Please compare clown doctors and medical doctors and try to find the differences and similarities. (group work) Activity 2: Fill in the blanks of transformation. First, in our text, you have to find the words indicating the negative feelings of the children and their parents. Then with the help of the clown doctors, they cheer up and please find the words showing they are happier .
Step 3 Post-reading.
For this step, we have 4 activities. Activity 1 is an English debating competition. The topic is “Are clown doctors necessary in the hospital ” Girls are the pro side, who support the idea that clown doctors are necessary in the hospital. Boys are the con side, who challenge the idea, thinking clown doctors are not necessary in the hospital. You have 3 minutes to prepare and the debate will last 6 minutes. Activity 2, watch two videos . The first one is part of a speech by a clown doctor and the other video is about the clown doctors in China. Activity 3: read 5 proverbs about smile or laughter and try to translate them into Chinese.1. Laughter is the sun that drives winter from the human face.2. If you smile at life, life will smile at you.3. Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.4. Smile is the most beautiful makeup.5. Good luck favors smiling girls.Activity 4:introduce the World Smile Day.
Step4 Homework
No.1: Write a passage from the perspective of Lara, or Lara’s parents or a medical doctor, or another patient. You can begin your article with the sentence” I am...” and then tell the story in our text.
No:2: Do you want to be a clown doctor in the future Why or why not Write a passage of 80 words to answer the question. You can choose 1 from the above two tasks. If you can write two passages, that’ better.
Conclusion
Now, we can answer the question put forward at the beginning of the class “What is the best medicine ” “Laughter is the best medicine.” So after reading the passage, we not only know a lot about the clown doctors, but also realize that whatever happens in our life, especially when faced with pain or challenges, we should wear a smile on our face. Everyone here, please turn the corners of your mouth into a smile and then give a laugh. Do you feel more relaxed That’s the wonder of laughing at work.
