教学过程
Step1. Lead-in
Students look at the pictures and answer the questions:
1.What are the key differences between team sports and individual sports
In individual sports, one player competes against other players. Team sports require no less than two players on each side. In team sports, every player needs to learn to trust and depend on others, to accept help and give help, and to work together to reach a common goal. Players who excel at individual sports, however, find satisfaction pushing themselves to achieve personal goals rather than relying on the team to help them get there. But even individual sports also need back up from a wider team.
2.Can you think of any famous sports teams
Possible answer: the Chinese Table Tennis Team, the Chinese women’s basketball team
Step2. Pre-reading
The teacher describes a team sport and students guess what it is.
A game in which two teams of six players use their hands to hit a large ball backwards and forwards over a high net while trying not to let the ball touch the ground on their own side.
Then learn some words related to the sport, i.e. volleyball.

Step3. While-reading
Activity 1
Students read the passage quickly and find out about the events mentioned.
The 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, the 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2016 Rio (de Janeiro) Olympics.
Activity 2
Students read the 1st paragraph and work out the main idea.
The Chinese women's volleyball team won the Olympic champion once again.
The teacher then shows the words and sentences in the 1st paragraph to explain the first writing skill, i.e. set a scene and the running commentary used in the paragraph to describe the electric scene.
Activity 3
Students read the 2nd paragraph and fill in the table.
Time Achievements
In the 1980s burst onto the international scene with several major world titles
In 1984 won an amazing three-victory over the United States in the final
In 2004 seized gold at Athens
In 2016 won gold in Rio
Then answer the question below and learn the reading skill, i.e. use key words and sentences to predict the content of the following paragraphs and the second writing skill, i.e. pay attention to the coherence between sentences and paragraphs.
What is most likely to be discussed in the paragraph that follows
To explain why winning gold in Rio paints the most vivid portrait of the team’s competitive spirit.
Activity 3
Students read the 3rd-5th paragraphs and answer the following questions:
1. What difficulties did the Chinese women’s volleyball team meet
· It was assigned to the “group of death”...
·... reached the quarter-finals as the fourth team in the group, with just two wins in preliminary matches.
·...Hui Ruoqi who had had heart surgery less than five months previously.
·...against the defending champion Brazil in the quarter finals.
2. What spirit did the team show in Rio
It showed fighting spirit, perseverance and strong team spirit.
Students then find examples in the passage to better explain these spirits.
1)fighting spirit
Example: After the team was assigned to the “group of death” and reached the quarter-finals as the fourth, every single member gave their all to fight, including Hui.
2)perseverance
Example: The team defeated the defending champion Brazil and the Netherlands which it lost to in the preliminaries and played a close match against Serbia.
3)strong team spirit
Example: Cooperation between team members allows individuals to demonstrate their own skills.
Activity 4
Students read the 6th paragraphs and work out the main idea.
The team members will cooperate with each other and aim high to start from zero to prepare for their new journey.
Step4. Post-reading
Students summary the structure of the passage
Para. 1 The electric scene in Rio
Para. 2 The team’s special place in the nation’s heart
Para. 3-5 The team’s road to success in Rio and its spirits shown in the game
Para. 6 The new journey ahead
Students talk about how well they have contributed to their group discussion and help each other to make improvements.
Possible answers: I collect materials for the group. I listen to others’ opinions and add more information.
Step5. Summary
Students summarize what they have learned.
Step6. Homework
Think about another sporting moment you’ve experienced and write it down.
