Learning Objectives:
After learning, the students will be are able to:
1. learn about some Chinese food and foreign food.
2. predict the content of the passage from the title and picture.
3. find out the different attitudes towards food with supporting sentences in passage.
4. have the correct attitude towards different eating cultures.

2. Get to know the main idea of each paragraph.

2. Lead the students to form an open and tolerant attitude towards different food cultures.

一、Pre-reading
1. Greeting
2. Leading-in
a. 教师向学生展示一段与饮食主题相关的视频。并且问学生以下问题:
Q1: What different types of food are introduced in the video
Beijing duck, dazhaxie and Sichuan hot pot.
Q2: Have you ever tried any of the food in the video what do you think of it
Yes,I’ve ever tried Beijing duck. It tastes delicious. / Quite well /Pretty good./ Surprisingly good.
b. 教师带领学生观看图片,讨论世界各地美食,激发兴趣。
Have you ever tried any of the food in the pictures Which country do they belong to
Dim sum is from China, maple syrup is from Canada, pasta is a typical food in Italy, Fish and chips is well known in United Kingdom, black bean salad comes from Mexico, and Curry originates from India.

black pudding: a type of dark sausage mainly made from pig’s blood and fat, famous in the UK and some other parts of Europe

二、 While- reading
Look at the title and the pictures, and guess the meaning of the title.
Fast reading
1. Read the passage and talk about your understanding of the title.
Answer : My father is British and my mother is Chinese. Thanks to that, I've been able to enjoy food from both countries ever since I was a child.
2. Match the main ideas with each paragraph.
Read the passage as quickly as possible and try to find the main idea of each paragraph in a short time.
Para.1 Dad still has a problem with certain Chinese dishes though he loves Chinese food.
Para.2 I do not have Dad's problem with Chinese food.
Para.3 I have a British father and a Chinese mother.
Para.4 I enjoy both British and Chinese food.
Para.5 I enjoy British breakfast made by Dad.
Para.6 I gathered my courage to try stinky tofu.
3. Read the four statements below and choose the main idea of the passage.
1 How the family stays healthy by eating Chinese food.
2 What the family has done to promote Chinese food.
3 How the family cooks both Chinese and English food.
4 How the family combines food from two cultures.
The correct answer is No. 4.
Careful reading
Read passage carefully and answer the questions.
What’s their attitude towards the food mentioned in the passage And find the supporting details.
1. In para.2-3 we can find some details about their opinions on Chinese food.
For Sichuan hot pot, the author's mother likes it very much,because we can find the sentence Mum has sweet memories of the food from her home town in Sichuan, and often cooks spicy dishes.
His father also likes it, too, we know it from the sentence Thanks to this dad has come to love hot pot.
For animal parts, dad and the son hold the different attitude towards it.
Dad doesn't like it while the son likes it very much.
The following sentences Even today he doesn't easily take to eating things like chicken feet, and But I enjoyed that sort of thing myself show us the answer.
2. In para.4, we can find some details about their opinions on British food.
English breakfast and Sunday roast. Maybe some of you are not sure what these British dishes are like.
A full English breakfast is a breakfast meal that typically includes bacon, sausages, eggs, other cooked foods and a beverage such as coffee or tea. It is usually shortened to “full English”.
Sunday roast consists of roast beef, mashed potatoes, other vegetables and mini puddings.
What is their attitude towards these food
For full English breakfast, mom and son both love it. There's a sentence showing that mom and I just have to find a way to get him into the kitchen.
Then for Sunday roast, the whole family love it. We know that because of the following sentence in the passage we all love roast beef and vegetables.
Now A question for you: Do they often eat Sunday roast
I don't think so because in the passage, mom says we'd better not eat too much roast food as it may make us suffer from heat inside our bodies, according to traditional Chinese medicine.
5. In para.5, we can find some details about the son's attitude towards stinky tofu.
When I came across stinky tofu, I think it is a horrible great thing that looked and smelled like a burnt sports shoe. And when I gather the courage to take a bite, I was amazed to find it wasn't so bad. Finally, I thought maybe I will fall in love with stinky tofu someday. So the son doesn't like stinky tofu.
6. Read para.6 carefully and find one sentence showing the son's opinion on cross-cultural eating habits.
There's nothing better than a cross cultural afternoon tea of English biscuits and a cup of Chinese tea in a fine China cup. It’s the author’s opinion on cross-cultural eating habits.
三、Post reading
1. Think & Share: People say that one man's meat is another man's poison, but I feel at home with food from both my cultures.
What does the author mean by saying “one man’s meat is another man’s poison” Do you know of any similar sayings in Chinese
It means that something that one person likes may not be liked by someone else.
Similar sayings in Chinese include “萝卜青菜,各有所爱” or “汝之蜜糖,彼之砒霜”。
2. What expressions does the author use to describe food and people’s feelings towards food Could you find the expressions The expressions are as follows.
Food: spicy, super, typical, stinky, horrible, grey, strong smelling
People’s feelings: shocked, take to, fall in love with, amazed, not so bad, feel at home…
3. Conclusion
After reading the passage, we can come to the conclusion that we should have an open mind towards different cultures. In this way, we will have the chance to create new ideas. And also, we will have the ability to accommodate ourselves to cross-culture.
四、Homework
Rewrite the passage according to the table.
