2. Improve students’ ability to grasp the order and organization of the text.

1. How to make students understand the figures of speech.
2. How to encourage students to describe other earthquakes in time order.
教学过程
Step Ⅰ Lead-in
Think about what can happen to a city during a big earthquake.
Step Ⅱ Pre-reading
Look at the title and photo below to guess what the text is mainly about.
Intention: It is intended to predict what the text is about according to the title and the photo.
Step Ⅲ While-reading
Activity 1 Read and check if you are right.
The passage talks about the terrible earthquake that nearly destroyed Tangshan city in Hebei Province in 1976.
Activity 2 Read the text carefully and write down the main idea of each paragraph.
Paragraph Main idea
Intention: This part is designed to help the students to understand the main idea of the passage.
Activity 3 The organization of the text.
Para.1: Before the earthquake
Para.2&3: During the earthquake
Para.4&5: After the earthquake
Intention: This part is aimed at helping students grasp the structure of the passage.

Step Ⅳ Appreciation
Activity 1 Explore the use of numbers.
Read the text carefully and explore the use of the numbers.

The army sent 150,000 soldiers to Tangshan to dig out those who were trapped and to bury the dead.

Activity 2 Read the text again and understand figures of speech(修辞)in the sentences:

Intention: The two tasks are designed to help the students learn about the features of the passage.
