Zhou Baoyu, who was born and brought up in a small village in Anhua county, Hunan province, still remembers the first time she was attracted by the great vocal performances of choral singing(合唱声乐表演), when the big loudspeaker of the broadcast station in her village played In the Field of Hope, a joyful song written by the 20th-century Chinese songwriter Shi Guangnan.
In 1995, she left her small village and went to high school in the town, where she saw a piano for the first time. On hearing Zhou’s beautiful voice one day, her music teacher encouraged her to get over her natural shyness and become the lead vocalist of the school’s choir, which planted the seed of music in Zhou’s heart, and she went on to become a music teacher in a primary school in Anhua in 2014.
She set up a choir in the school, which, however, was put on pause in 2017. She said the children loved choral singing, but the level and method of teaching choral singing were not up to the mark in the small village.
In 2019, Zhou was able to restart the choir in the school thanks to Edit Lanczky, a music teacher from Beijing Hungarian Cultural Institute, who came to the school along with her Hungarian coworkers not only to teach the children how to sing, but also to train the local music teachers to make choral singing a part of the school’s music education programs.
“Singing is the simplest and most direct way for children to learn and enjoy music,” Zhou said, adding that Lanczky and her coworkers used several interesting techniques like role-playing games to make learning music fun for the students She continued, “I believe that music should be accessible to everyone. I feel very touched and proud when I see the smiles on children’s faces, when they sing in a choir. In fact, singing in a choir is beyond music itself. The children become more confident and sociable.”
4. What can we know about Zhou
A. She wrote In the Field of Hope.
B. Her teacher led her way to music.
C. She was a music teacher from Beijing.
D. She never saw a piano until she became a teacher.
5. Why did the choir stop in 2017
A It was short of money. B. It had few students.
C. It had a low teaching level. D. It was denied by students’ parents.
6. How did Edit Lanczky and her coworkers support Zhou’s choir
A. They gave them a piano.
B. They had a talk with the local government.
C. They stayed on as official teachers in the choir.
D. They guided both the students and local music teachers.
7. How does Zhou find learning music
A. It increases students’ confidence. B. It costs a lot.
C. It makes students creative. D. It is boring.

A 2010 national law that improved nutrition(营养)standards for school meals may have begun to help slow the rise in obesity(肥胖)among America’s children according to a study. The study found a small but significant fall in the average BMI(体重指数)of more than 14,000 school kids aged 5 to 18 after carrying out the program of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, which was the first national law to improve the nutritional balance of school meal offerings in more than 20 years. It increased the quantity of fruits, vegetables and whole grains required in school meals.
The study shows that improving the quality of school meals by law might be one way to help stop the possibilities of childhood obesity, which has been rising for decades and now affects about 1 in 5 US kids.
The new study reviewed nationwide data(数据)from 50 groups of schoolchildren from January 2005 to August 2016, before the law took effect, and data from September 2016 to March 2020, after it was fully carried out. It found that a BMI for children fell by 0.041 units per year, compared with that of before the law took effect. That amounts to about a quarter of one BMI unit per year, Aruna Chandran, a professor from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, said.
At the same time, significant decreases in BMI measures were seen not only in kids aged 5 to 11, but also in those aged 12 to 18. “That’s a great change, ” Chandran said. “There are kid who potentially have their own right to buy their own snacks.”
The new results come within days of the introduction of updated standards for school meals, including the first limits on added sugars, decreased sodium and increased flexibility for whole grains. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said the study shows that healthy school meals are “important for dealing with diet-related conditions like obesity.”
8. What’s the purpose of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010
A. To improve school meals. B. To record the change of BMI.
C. To check medical conditions. D. To help end hunger.
9. How did the study learn about the effect of the program
A. By collecting stories. B. By presenting examples.
C By making a comparison. D. By giving reasons.
10. How did Chandran feel about the program
A. Uninterested. B. Satisfied C. Worried. D. Confused.
11. In which part of a newspaper can we probably find the text
A. Health. B. Sport. C. History. D. Science.
D
Youth soccer coach Pierre Hedji has set up the club DCXI to give kids in Washington, D. C. a chance to learn soccer and compete. Unlike most of the clubs, DCXI has a kind of pay-what-you-can model designed for people who spend much money on professional services.
“This is the center of pay-to-play,” Kevin Salandy, a software consultant, says after a DCXI’s winning game against the once best team from the state. “There’s a lot of money in DCXI club. That’s why they have these excellent teams.”
While DCXI’s pay-what-you-can model may be like what Salandy said, it has a lot of critics(批评者)who say it’s not benefiting kids or the sport as a whole.
“Some families make such a pay-to-play in club soccer because they can. It’s fun for their kids, and there may be benefits that come out of it,” says Lindsey Blom, a professor of sport at Ball State University, but for the low-income(低收入)families, that may mean spending half of their yearly income.
DCXI doesn’t make sure a kid will receive the best coaching all the time, either. Blom says, “People think that the more they put into their kids’ experience financially, the more successful they’re going to be and the more successful they’re going to get out of it. But the truth isn’t often to be the case.”
Peter Guthrie, a youth soccer coach, says, “In some cases, people choosing DCXI believe that this is going to be the path for their kids to receive college scholarships. So they have to do well as a10-year-old in order to get what they want.” In fact, a small part of high school soccer players receive scholarships to play in college.
Another problem with DCXI: inequity on school teams. Kids who can’t afford club soccer could play on their high school teams where it’s generally free. But in tryouts, they often have to compete against more experienced kids who come from families that can pay for clubs.
12. What does Salandy mean in paragraph 2
A. DCXI is faced with a lot of critics. B. DCXI was once the best.
C. Money plays a key role in DCXI’s success. D. DCXI kids hardly competed.
13. How does DCXI influence low-income families according to Lindsey Blom
A. It puts too much pressure on them.
B. It helps their kids go to college.
C. It fails to bring fun to their kids.
D. It ensures their kids receive scholarships.
14. What does the underlined word “inequity” mean in the last paragraph
A. Boredom. B. Laziness.
C. Unfairness. D. Irresponsibility.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. The History of DCXI B. DCXI—Good or Bad
C. How to Choose a Club D. DCXI—out of Reach for Adults

Since we all had different things to buy, we decided to get what each of us wanted, and meet back on the grass in a few minutes.
When my friend Joy headed for a hot dog shop, I decided to go with her. We watched the seller put together the perfect hot dog, just the way we wanted it. But when we took out our money to pay the bill, the seller surprised us.
“You are the first customers to visit, and the first order is given to you for free,” he said.
After we thanked him, we joined our friends in the park, and dug into our food. But as we talked and ate, I was distracted (分心) by a man sitting alone nearby, looking at us. I could tell that he hadn’t showered for days. Another homeless person, I thought, like all the others you see in cities. I didn’t pay much more attention than that.

A. To improve school meals. B. To record the change of BMI.
C. To check medical conditions. D. To help end hunger.

A. By collecting stories. B. By presenting examples.
C. By making a comparison. D. By giving reasons.

It was a beautiful day for sightseeing. We were a group of students just out for some fun. The weather was perfect for a picnic, so when lunch time came, we set our sights on a small park.
After we finished eating, we packed our lunch bags and prepared to throw them away.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】Suddenly, a strong voice came from that homeless person. He said, “Excuse me, would you mind sparing a meal for a hungry soul ” His words struck a chord in my heart, reminding me of the privilege and abundance that I often take for granted. Feeling a mix of guilt and compassion, I turned to face him. As we talked, I discovered that he was once an accomplished musician, full of dreams and aspirations. It was disheartening to hear how circumstances had pushed him to this point of desperation.
Joy asked me to wait for her for a minute and ran to the hot dog shop. She returned with an extra hot dog and a bottle of water in her hands. She handed them to the homeless man with a warm smile. His eyes sparkled with appreciation as he accepted the food. As I watched the exchange, a wave of realization washed over me. This encounter was more than just a random act of kindness; it was a reminder of the power we hold to make a difference in someone's life. I felt a renewed sense of empathy and the urge to do more.
