From a fish and chip stall, Jenny has come to be the toast of London’s foodie scene. She has achieved a remarkable feat by becoming a famous chef, a distinction that has been a dream coming true for her. “It’s still sinking in,” she said, expressing her surprise at the overwhelming social media response to her accomplishment.
Her restaurant is a unique space where modern West African cuisine takes center stage, highlighting the rich culinary (烹饪的) traditions of Nigeria’s Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo ethnic groups. “In my restaurant, I bring together these three culinary traditions, providing an exciting journey for diners,” Jenny described. Each dish tells a story, from a black sauce for fish, a postpartum (产后的) meal for new mothers, to a fermented tomato sauce.
Jenny’s love for food began at a young age, but she was initially guided towards a more traditional career path. She studied biological sciences in university, where she also ran a fish and chip cart. Her move to the UK in 1999 marked the beginning of her journey towards culinary success.
As for her, her restaurant is not only a restaurant but also Jenny’s way of honoring her heritage and the food her grandmother used to prepare. “The memory of my grandmother’s cooking inspires me every day,” she shared. Jenny’s cooking shows heartfelt respect for her roots, and her mission is to showcase the flavors of her culture.
Jenny longs to be a role model for chefs from diverse backgrounds. She recognizes the value of representation and hopes her success can inspire other chefs in the UK. She notes that while the industry is slowly becoming more inclusive, it’s crucial for employers, landlords, critics, and investors to expand their perspectives to support a variety of cuisines.
Her fame is a testament (证明) to her talent and dedication, but it’s the personal connection to her dishes and the memories of home-cooked meals that truly fuel her passion. Jenny’s story is a shining example of how one can achieve their dreams while staying true to their cultural identity.

With a brain the size of a pinhead, insects possess a great sense of direction. They manage to locate themselves and move through small openings. How do they do this with their limited brain power Understanding the inner workings of an insect’s brain can help us in our search towards energy-efficient computing, physicist Elisabetta Chicca of the University of Groningen shows with her most recent result: a robot that acts like an insect.
It’s not easy to make use of the images that come in through your eyes when deciding what your feet or wings should do. A key aspect here is the apparent motion of things as you move. “Like when you're on a train,” Chicca explains. “The trees nearby appear to move faster than the houses far away.” Insects use this information to infer how far away things are. This works well when moving in a straight line, but reality is not that simple. To keep things manageable for their limited brain power, they adjust their behaviour: they fly in a straight line, make a turn, then make another straight line.
In search of the neural mechanism (神经机制) that drives insect behaviour, PhD student Thorben Schoepe developed a model of its neuronal activity and a small robot that uses this model to find the position. His model is based on one main principle: always head towards the area with the least apparent motion. He had his robot drive through a long passage consisting of two walls and the robot centred in the middle of the passage, as insects tend to do. In other virtual environments, such as a space with small openings, his model also showed similar behaviour to insects.
The fact that a robot can find its position in a realistic environment is not new. Rather, the model gives insight into how insects do the job, and how they manage to do things so efficiently. In a similar way, you could make computers more efficient.
In the future, Chicca hopes to apply this specific insect behaviour to a chip as well. “Instead of using a general-purpose computer with all its possibilities, you can build specific hardware; a tiny chip that does the job, keeping things much smaller and energy-efficient.” She comments.
8. Why is “a train” mentioned in Paragraph 2
A. To illustrate the principle of train motion. B. To highlight why human vision is limited.
C. To explain how insects perceive distances. D. To compare the movement of trees and houses.
9. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about concerning Schoepe’s model
A. Its novel design. B. Its theoretical basis.
C. Its possible application. D. Its working mechanism.
10. What do the researchers think of the finding
A. Amusing. B. Discouraging. C. Promising. D. Contradictory.
11. What will Chicca’s follow-up study focus on
A. Inventing insect-like chips. B. Studying general-purpose robots.
C. Creating insect-inspired computers. D. Developing energy-efficient hardware.
D
Altitudes, landscapes and climates change dramatically as you move across the globe, but one factor remains nearly universal. All of Earth’s diversity is blanketed under a blue sky. But why is the sky blue The explanation requires a bit of particle physics (粒子物理).
We see blue above us because of how light from the sun interacts with Earth’s atmosphere. The visible light contains a variety of colors, ranging from red light to violet. When all of the colors are mixed, the light appears white, Marc Chenard, a scientist at the National Weather Service, told Live Science. But once the white light traveling from the sun reaches Earth, some of the colors begin to interact with small particles in the atmosphere, he said.
Each color in the visible light has a different wavelength. Red and orange light waves, for instance, have longer wavelengths, while blue and violet light have much shorter wavelengths. It’s the shorter wavelengths of light that are more likely to be scattered (散射) or absorbed and reflected in a different direction by the air particles in Earth’s atmosphere, Chenard said. That’s what makes the sky blue.
Even though violet light is scattered too, there are a couple of reasons why we see the sky as more blue than purple, according to Ed Bloomer, an astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich in the U. K. First, the sun doesn’t produce equal illumination (亮度) in all colors; it contains more blue light than violet light, so more blue light is scattered. Additionally, our eyes are not equally responsive to all colors, Bloomer told Live Science; they are less sensitive to violet light.
This preferential scattering of blue light also plays into the colors of sun rise and sunset. At sunset, as a particular point is turning farther and farther from the sun, sunlight must travel farther through the atmosphere to reach your eyes. By the time the sunlight reaches you, all of the blue light has been scattered away. As a result, the orange, red and yellow wavelengths are all that’s left to color the sunset.
12. The sky is blue because visible lights .
A. interact with air particles B. travel at different speeds
C. are too colorful to illuminate D. are reflected by blue oceans
13. How does the author make the explanation more accessible
A By following order of space. B. By picturing different scenes.
C. By giving personal experience. D. By quoting scientists’ opinions.
14. What mainly affects the colors of sunrise and sunset
A. The quality of the atmosphere. B. The easier scattering of blue light.
C. The reflecting direction of the sunlight. D. The distance between the observer and the sun.
15. What is the best title for the passage
A. Earth’s Diversity: A Changeable Factor B. Atmospheric Circle: A Colorful Blanket
C. The Color of Sky:A Particle Physics View D. The Light Scattering:A Colorful Movement

On warm September night, on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, soft sea winds filled the air. The moon was full. Mira could feel the energy in the air. She loved everything about the ocean, and this evening she had come down to the beach to enjoy the salty night air and hear the waves washing over the sand gently.
Mira closed her eyes and listened to the waves. The gentle rolling sound was calming. Suddenly, Mira could hear another sound, too. She listened carefully. The sound was so soft that she could barely hear it. She opened her eyes and looked down at the sand. It was moving! All of a sudden, she could see a tiny head coming out. Then, she saw four tiny feet and a shell. A turtle had emerged!
Mira looked in amazement at the baby turtle. In the moonlight she could just make out the green and brown pattern on its shell. It was so small! She watched with wonder as other baby turtles began to emerge. One by one they struggled out of their underground nests. Soon the beach was like a moving carpet of tiny turtles.
Mira knew the turtles should head towards the waves and swim away, so she was puzzled when they began to pull themselves in the opposite direction. Why would the turtles be going away from the ocean
Suddenly, she remembered something she had heard from some people living here. “Loggerhead sea turtles come back here every year in April. They bury their eggs on the beach and in the first week of September those baby turtles hatch and head back down to the sea. But some of them never make it. Sometimes they die going across the beach, trying to find those bright lights in the houses. The lights confuse the sea turtles.”

A. By following order of space.

【答案】A possible version
Mira looked across the beach at her house. What came into her sight was her mother, sitting on the porch rocking her baby sister. Accompanying her was his father drinking lemonade. Mira could see them clearly because her house had two bright lights that lit up the front yard of the house. Suddenly it clicked. Mira shouted to them at the top of her voice, “Turn off the lights please!” But they failed to hear, so she began to run. She raced to her house with only one thought “Turn off the lights”. She tripped and fell, but without delay she picked herself up and continued running until she reached the house.
Upon arrival, she shouted, “The turtles are hatching! We have to help them!” With that, Mira dashed into the house and turned off the bright porch lights. Her parents were a little bit confused. However, after Mira explained what had happened, they jumped into action as well. They hurriedly rushed to their neighbors and asked them to turn off their lights. Meanwhile, Mira was off running towards the sea again. She reached the beach just in time to see the tiny turtles slipping silently into the waves. As the last turtle swam away, it seemed to have looked back at Mira. In the moonlight, Mira thought she saw it smile. Now Mira could picture all the small turtles swimming happily in the ocean.
