Paul Durietz is a 76-year-old social studies teacher from Illinois, the United States. On September 1, he set a Guinness World Record for the world’s longest teaching career. Mr. Durietz has been teaching for 53 years — since he was 23 years old.
When he was just 11, Mr. Durietz says, he made up his mind to be a social studies teacher. Social studies is the study of history, and how people, countries, and cultures are connected. He became interested in history after hearing stories from his father, who fought in World War II.
Mr. Durietz got his first teaching job at Woodland Middle School in Gurnee, Illinois in 1970. Ever since then, he’s been teaching social studies at the same school. He says he loves sharing his knowledge of history with students. “Teaching is never boring,” he says. “Every day is different.”
Things have changed a lot since Mr. Durietz first began teaching. When he started, he wrote on a blackboard with chalk, and the students used paper textbooks. These days, he and the students use computers and digital whiteboards. Despite this, Mr. Durietz says the students are still pretty much the same — except that now they have cell phones.
With or without technology, Mr. Durietz has used creative activities to help his students learn. For example, he has organized virtual field trips, geography contests, and special days about the US Civil War. He has even organized elections at school to help his students learn about politics.
Mr. Durietz wasn’t really trying to set a record. But his family, friends, and the people he works with encouraged him to apply to Guinness to see if he’d set a record. He had. Now he still has no plans to retire any time soon. “Keep working on what I love to do in life,” he says.
4. What is the main purpose of the text
A. To introduce Guinness world Records. B. To inspire readers to create records.
C. To recognize teachers’ contribution. D. To report a record-setting teacher.
5. What has changed greatly in Mr. Durietz’s teaching career
A Teaching equipment. B. Students’ attitudes.
C. His love of teaching. D. Classroom activities.
6. Why will Mr. Durietz continue his work
A. He wants to keep his world record. B. He is devoted to his beloved career.
C. He enjoys overcoming difficulties. D. He is persuaded to keep working.
7. What message does the text convey
A. Nothing is impossible for a willing heart.
B. Success comes to those who never give up.
C. Greatness can be achieved in ordinary jobs.
D. It takes combined efforts to realize a dream.

Every year around August, millions of teens take their parents to stores to buy new clothes for the start of the school year. Not every parent can afford this, and some teens are forced to go to school in the same clothes they wore last year. The obvious differences in clothes cause differences among students. There is a simple solution to this problem; school uniforms (校服).
I know from personal experience and surveys that wearing uniforms creates a sense of equality among peers (同龄人).
From sixth grade until I graduated from senior high school, I attended a school that required students to wear uniforms. The uniform was very simple: dark brown shoes, green-brown pants, and a white shirt. The uniform left little room for any kind of self-expression, especially through clothes.
However, I learned how to stand out by expressing myself through my personality, art, and sports. I did not know I could draw until the sixth grade. I also would never have learned of my musical abilities if it hadn’t been for my desire to find ways to express myself. Uniforms taught me that I was myself, except what I wore.
Uniforms also contribute to a much safer learning environment. I remember a particular event that happened in my junior high school. A man ran away from prison and wanted to hide in the gym of our school. Luckily, cameras all over the school quickly found the stranger before any danger could ever happen as he was out of place. School officials kept the man locked inside our gym until the police came to take him back to prison.
Uniforms help provide a better educational experience for all students no matter what race, culture, or economic class (经济阶层). In closing, wearing uniforms is good for both schools and students.
8. How does the author introduce the topic
A. By explaining a basic rule.
B. By challenging others’ views.
C. By describing a common problem.
D. By sharing his parents’ experience.
9. Which of the following could the author agree with
A. Uniforms should be more modern.
B. Uniforms can help shape better students.
C. Uniforms are popular with students.
D. Uniforms are bad for self-development.
10. What do the underlined words “out of place” in Paragraph 5 probably mean
A Dressing differently. B. Standing straight.
C. Running fast. D. Breathing heavily.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To record his high school life.
B. To show his supportive view towards uniforms.
C. To ask students to like what they wear.
D To introduce high school uniforms.
D
The first typewriters were big heavy metal machines that worked a bit like a piano. Have you ever seen the inside of a real piano You press a key and some levers( 杠杆) make a small tool inside hit just the right piano string to make a note. Early typewriters were similar. They had all these levers with a metal letter at the end of each of them. You had to press a letter key quite hard to make the metal lever fly across and hit the paper.
The first machine did have the letter keys in the order of the letters we learn. But the trouble was that if you hit two keys quickly the levers would jam(卡住). Jams were most likely when the two keys were close together on the keyboard.
Christopher Sholes, an American inventor, succeeded in dealing with the problem. He tried many ways to avoid the need to type two keys that were close together. The best way he could find was similar to the QWERTY keyboard we all use today.
Sholes also made the name of his machine easy to type. He placed on the same line all the letters of the words"type"and "writer".He sold his invention to the Remington Company which built and sold the first successful typewriters.Later, many other kinds of the letter keys have been tried. Some are said to be easier to learn or faster to use. But none has proved good enough to beat QWERTY.
QWERTY was developed for the English language. The keyboard slightly differs around the world. For example AZERTY is commonly used for French, QWERTZ for German, and QZERTY for Italian. Perhaps you can find someone from India, Japan or Korea. Ask them to show you the keyboard they use in their language.
12. What is the author’s purpose in writing the first paragraph
A. To explain the difference between the typewriter and the piano.
B. To show how the piano influenced the typewriter.
C. To tell why the typewriter was invented.
D. To explain how the early typewriter worked.
13. Why did Christopher Sholes change the order of the letters on the keyboard
A. To make people type quickly.
B. To solve the jam problem.
C. To help people remember it easily.
D. To put frequently used letters together.
14. What do we know about the QWERTY keyboard from Paragraph 4
A. It was doubted at first.
B. It still needs to be improved.
C. It's better than other keyboards.
D. It made the Remington Company successful.
15. What is the main idea of the last paragraph
A. The keyboard is changing over time.
B. The word "QWERTY"is out of date.
C. The QWERTY keyboard is very popular.
D. The keyboard changes with some languages.

Mr. Durietz wasn’t really trying to set a record. But his family, friends, and the people he works with encouraged him to apply to Guinness to see if he’d set a record. He had. Now he still has no plans to retire any time soon. “Keep working on what I love to do in life,” he says.
