I was born with a vision (视力) problem, and over the years, my eyesight gradually worsened. Once I was in the first year of my PhD, I was almost 100% blind.
Though I am blind, my great passion is climbing regardless of many challenges.
I started climbing when I was young. My dad took me up my first rock route when I was two. He taught me everything he knew and I led my first route outside when I was 11. At that time I had about 20% vision, unable to pick out the routes from the ground.
I met my wife Molly at a climbing club. We didn’t climb together very much because we were both very experienced and normally led those who hadn’t done as much as we had. We were just friends at first, but eventually romance (浪漫) arose.
In fact, I proposed (求婚) to her in 2017 on a climbing trip to Greenland. It was my most difficult trip, camping in temperatures below-20℃. I didn’t have a diamond ring at that time.
In the end I went down on one knee with a special ring made by myself. She said yes, but then I fell down and somehow dropped the ring. So it’s still there in Greenland!
It’s quite possible that I wouldn’t be a good climber if I weren’t blind - if I didn’t have these challenges. It wouldn’t focus me. That determination is built through my disability.

People who speak or perform before the public sometimes may suffer from “Stage Fright. ” Stage fright makes a person nervous. In the worst case(情况) it can make one's mind go back and forget what one ought to say, or to act. Actors, musicians, dancers, lawyers, even radio show hosts(节目主持人) have suffered from stage fright at one time or another.
Diana Nichols is an expert in helping people free from stage fright at a medical centre in New York City. She helps actors learn to control themselves. Miss Nichols says some people have always been afraid to perform before the audience. Others, she says, develop stage fright after a fearful experience.
She offers them ways to control the fear. One way is to smile before going onto the stage. Taking two deep breaths also helps. Deep breathing helps you get control of your body.
Miss Nichols persuades her patients to tell themselves that their speech or performance does not have to the perfect. It's all right to make a mistake. She tells them they should not be too cautions(谨慎的) while they are performing. It is important that they should continue to perform while she is helping them. After each performance, they discuss what happened and find out what advice helped and what did not. As they perform more and more, they will fear less and less as much as 50%. Miss Nichols says the aim is only to reduce stage fright, not to eliminate it completely. This is because a little stage fright makes a person more cautious, and improves the performance.

Beethoven, one of the world’s most-loved composers, is famous for his nine symphonies(交响曲). Before he died, he began a new symphony, but never finished puter scientists, musicians and historians used artificial intelligence (AI) to finish his 10th symphony.
Beethoven wrote many famous pieces of music, but he’s probably best known for his nine symphonies. A symphony is a long, grand piece of classical music, usually divided into four parts. The four parts are often linked by “themes”—repeated music al ideas that tie the whole piece together. When Beethoven died in 1827, he had some ideas for the 10th symphony. But all that he left behind were some notes about the piece and a few “sketches”—short bits of written music.
In 2019, a special team of musicians, computer scientists, and historians was formed. To use Al to help with the symphony, the team turned every piece of music that Beethoven ever wrote into a form the computer could understand. With the program fed all of Beethoven’s music. AI could look for patterns in the way Beethoven wrote. This included, for example, how he reused simple melodies(旋律) all through a piece to create a theme, or how he moved between different parts of the symphony. Thus, it would be much easier for the special team to finish Beethoven’s 10th symphony.
One early test told the team they were on the right track. They took a few minutes of music created by AI based on Beethoven’s sketches, and played it for Beethoven experts, musicians, and reporters. No one could tell which parts had been written by Beethoven and which parts AI made up. Finally, AI had the challenge of trying to connect the little musical bits into a symphony. It took over two years, but the team was able to complete Beethoven’s 10th symphony. Not simply a melody, but 40 minutes of music for a full orchestra-a large group of musicians playing everything from stringed instruments, like violins, to trumpets, flutes, drums, and a piano.
12. What does the writer intend to do in Paragraph 1
A. Explain what artificial intelligence is.
B. Give readers a general idea of the text.
C. Tell readers how Beethoven is loved by people.
D. Show the reason for Beethoven’s new symphony.
13. What is the goal of the special team
A. To learn to play Beethoven’s nine symphonies.
B. To feed all Beethoven’s symphonies into the computer.
C. To try to complete Beethoven’s 10th symphony.
D. To create a new piece of music based on the 10th symphony.
14. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. The special team’s great efforts paid off.
B. It was challenging for AI to complete the task.
C. Beethoven’s sketches were too hard to figure out.
D. AI simply created a melody of Beethoven’s 10th symphony.
15. Which would be the best title for the passage
A. AI Is Applied to Playing Classical Music.
B. AI Is Used to Finish Beethoven’s Music.
C. The Process of Beethoven’s Creation of Music.
D. Beethoven’s Last but the Most Famous Symphony.

The next day, they cleaned upstairs, downstairs, inside, outside, until everything was spotless. Tired, they sank into the couch. Pointing to Grandpa’s chair, John’s mom exclaimed, “Oh my! That old chair has got to go. We’ll buy Grandpa a new one.” John’s grandpa lived with them since Grandma had died. “John, Let’s take the chair to the curb (马路边). “It’s old and worn. We’ll buy you a new one,” John’s mom argued.
“No,” John’s grandpa persisted, trying to push his chair back into place. “I don’t want a new one,” his voice trembled.
John’s mom had to give up and said she would discuss it with John’s dad, who was still at work. John’s mom left the living room to prepare the dinner. With a sigh of relief, the old man sank into his chair and closed his eyes.
“Grandpa, why won’t you let us get rid of the chair It’s so old,” John asked his grandpa when his mom left the room.
“You don’t understand John,” Grandpa shook his head from side to side. After a long pause he said, “I sat in this chair, with your grandma right here, when I asked her to marry me.

Let’s create a smoke-free world together
The harmful effects of cigarette smoking on the individual and collective health have been clear for decades. Around seven million people die of tobacco-related diseases in the world every year. Smoking is a silent killer which not just kills the smokers but also the people around the smokers.
To create a smoke-free world, tobacco control regulations should be strictly enforced and campaigns to educate both the young population and adults about the health risks of tobacco use should be stepped up. Government officials, medical workers and teachers should refrain from smoking during working hours at workplaces. Parents should also lead by example and guide their children to shun tobacco.

“Mom! I’m home!” John closed the door and dropped his books on a nearby chair. “Hi, John, home already ” His mom turned around.
“It’s spring. I was thinking more of our annual spring cleaning,” John’s mom suggested. “Tomorrow is Saturday. Let’s do some cleaning, okay ” “Okay,” John agreed unwillingly.
Tomorrow the garbage truck is picking up on our block.”
As they attempted to move the chair, Grandpa walked by dragging his feet through the door and quickly blocked their way. “Oh, no!” he protested. “You can’t take my chair.”
“You don’t understand, John,” Grandpa shook his head from side to side. After a long pause he said, “I sat in this chair, with your grandma right here, when I asked her to marry me. When I sit in this chair and close my eyes I feel she is near.” Grandpa softly stroked (轻抚) the arm of the chair. “And the night your father was born, I sat in this chair. I was nervous and scared when they placed the tiny baby into my arms, yet I was never happier.” A smile flashed across his old face.
“I think I’m beginning to understand,” John said thoughtfully. “The chair gave you comfort and warmth. This is not just a chair. It is more like a friend.” However, that night when John and his grandpa were asleep, John’s mom and dad carried the chair to the curb.

【答案】One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
The next morning, when John came downstairs, his grandpa stood by the window and looked outside sadly. A tear rolled down his cheek. John noticed that the chair stood at the curb on the street. The garbage truck pulling up to the house shocked John into action. He ran outside immediately. He waved both arms in the air as he rushed to stop the garbage men from moving the chair away. Then he went back home with that chair and said, “Mom, this chair has been with Grandpa for a very long time. It is like a friend.”
Paragraph 2:
Seeing John rescue the chair from the garbage men, his mom turned and looked at John’s grandpa. She felt guilty. Then she held Grandpa’s hands and said, “I’m sorry, Father. I just didn’t realize how much the chair meant to you.” They carried the chair back into the living room. Seeing the chair back, John’s grandpa was thrilled, a broad smile spreading across his face. John and Grandpa wholeheartedly agreed that the living room was full of life with this old chair. The meaning of things lies not in the things themselves, but in people’s attitude towards them.
