Frank, Aged 16

As the daughter of immigrants (移民), Chanthaphone’s primary language at home was Lao. At 5, she learned to speak English. But she didn’t know how to read and write — let alone how to fit in at school or communicate with classmates. Mrs. Lewis, Chanthaphone’s second-grade teacher, changed everything. She taught her students that it was OK if they did not know English and it was all right for them to use words in their home language to explain how they were feeling and thinking. Chanthaphone got more and more confidence and wanted to do what her teacher did in the future.
Now, at 26, Chanthaphone is an English teacher at Fort Worth ISDs William Monnig Middle School. Like Mrs. Lewis, Chanthaphone aims to help her non-English-speaking students to gain the confidence they need to realize their potential (潜力) in life.
At the beginning of each school year, Chanthaphone shares her story with her new classes. She tells them she knows what it feels like not to want to participate in class or raise her hand. She reminds them that she once sat in their seat and felt different because of her upbringing. But she stresses that's what makes each of them special.
Her students, though, are usually not persuaded. She has to take out photos of her graduating college and tell them about her parents and what her school was like. Then it finally clicks.
In the classroom, Chanthaphone allows students to communicate in whichever way they feel most comfortable. For some, it may be raising their hands and voicing their thoughts. For others, it may be writing their thoughts on a piece of paper and handing it to Chanthaphone.
However, Chanthaphone does encourage her students to go out of their comfort zone. She wants them to work with students they don't know because teamwork and collaboration (协作) with unfamiliar people is important.
“I’ve always wanted to be the teacher who supported students and advocated for them in and outside of classroom,” Chanthaphone said. “When I get notes or see Facebook posts from parents talking about previous teachers, including me, I feel like my goal has been completed.”

It’s a warm summer afternoon. You’re cooking up the catch of the day over a campfire. Suddenly, a few raindrops fall on your arms, and before you know it, the sky opens up. Then you hear what sounds like thunder in the distance. What should you do Your tent is close by and would offer shelter (庇护) from the pouring rain. There’s a campsite picnic shelter a few minutes down the path. And then you remember that your car is parked down the road. What’s your safest choice to make sure you and your families are safe
It’s a common question for many hikers and campers, especially when they are camping during summer months. Heading to your car is almost always the safest choice. On the one hand, your tent and a picnic shelter will keep you dry, but they offer little or no protection against lightning. Your car, on the other hand, will keep you dry and protect you from lightning strikes. Protecting yourself against possible lightning strikes is very important; lightening kills an average of 62 people in the US each year. If you keep all of the windows and doors closed in your car, you’ll be able to return to your campsite safely.
Of course, if you’re going backpacking (背包旅行), not car camping, and you’re deep in the woods, your car won’t be a good choice. So, what should you do if your car is far away and there’s no other safe shelter nearby First, you’ll have to make sure that tree branches or other objects don’t fall on you or your campsite. Then you’ll have to get in a safe position to avoid lightning, or flash flood conditions. What else should you do

A. It is important to learn to protect yourself when camping.
B. Backpacking is not a good choice for campers.
C. People should never camp deep in the woods.
D. People should not go camping alone.
35. What is the passage mainly about

Little Tom was a student in senior high school. He was not good at his work and failed many times in the exams, and he never knew why he couldn’t catch up with others.
One day, Tom and his teacher were walking through the forest. He was disturbed by the fact that his mind was in constant unrest. He asked his teacher, “Why most people’s minds are restless, and only a few have a calm mind What can one do to calm the mind down ”
The teacher looked at Tom, smiled and told him a story:
On one beautiful day, an elephant was standing by the shade of a tree, eating its leaves. Suddenly, a small fly came buzzingly and landed on the elephant’s ear. The elephant stayed calm and continued eating, ignoring the fly. The fly flew around the elephant’s ear, buzzing noisily, yet the elephant seemed to be unaffected. This confused the fly, and it asked, “Are you deaf ”
“No!” the elephant answered.
“Why aren’t you bothered by my buzz ” the fly asked.
“Why are you so restless and noisy Why can’t you stay calm just for a few moments ” asked the elephant, and peacefully continued eating the leaves.
The fly answered, “Everything I see, hear and feel attracts my attention, and all noises and movements around me affect my behavior.”
“What is your secret How can you stay so calm and still, while I am buzzing around your ears ”
“I can continue eating peacefully, because my five senses do not disturb my peace.”
“How is it possible ” asked the fly amazed and confused.
“Because I don’t let them rule my attention,” answered the elephant.
“I am in control of my mind and my thoughts, and therefore, I can direct my attention where I want, and ignore any disturbance including your buzz.”
“And therefore,” continued the elephant, “I am completely lost in the act of eating, enjoying my food and chewing it peacefully.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】
Dear Peter,
Thank you for your congratulations on my admission to high school. Learning that you are curious about my brand new life, I am writing to share what attracts me most with you.
To my amazement, not only do we have a robot club where we can cooperate with other students to design our own robots, but also the friendliness and patience of the teachers are beyond my expectation. Besides, I find it inspiring to communicate with my classmates because they are such ambitious teenagers with rich knowledge of the world and a positive attitude towards the future.
With so wonderful a learning environment, I have confidence that I will develop into an adult both mentally and academically.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】After listening to the story, Tom’s eyes opened wide and smiled. He looked at his teacher and said, “I now understand! When I am doing something, I am always not paying attention and I am easily disturbed by the things around me. So my mind is always in constant unrest. If I focus my attention on the things that I am doing, I will not care about whatever happens in the world around me and I will control my five senses and control my mind.” “Yes, that’s right,’’ the teacher answered.
From that day on, he paid his attention to whatever he was doing. In class, his attention was completely fixed on what the teacher was saying, and he didn’t talk with his deskmate any more, which made his deskmate amazed. When he was doing his homework no matter what was going on outside, he was not affected. His parents were surprised at his change and asked what had happened to him. He told the story about the fly and the elephant to them. Because of his efforts, he made great progress in the final examination.
