One year before, at age 18, Leszyeski had aged out of foster care (寄养), having been in the system since she was four when her single mother was no longer able to care for her. Leszyeski was now enrolled in college, hoping to become a doctor. And the only furniture she had in her apartment was an air mattress with a hole in it.
Then she learned about an organization Chairity. The organization provides furniture and household goods for young adults who have left foster care. Leszyeski reached out to Chairity, a nonprofit formed by 23-year-old Maria Paparella.
Paparella first became aware of foster care in elementary school when her parents were considering adopting a child. The plan didn’t work out, but Paparella often found herself thinking about that child. “I’m really close with my family, and I just couldn’t imagine being completely on my own at 18,” she says.
At 16, Paparella visited Summit County Children Services, with a list of questions, trying to understand what aging out looked like. One of her questions was “What’s not being met for these young people ” Near the top of the list was furniture. “That struck home,” says Paparella. The idea of “moving into an apartment without a bed to sleep on or a sofa to sit on” pulled at her heartstrings.
Paparella contacted her parents’ friends, asking if they had spare furniture to donate. A local furniture store offered free ware-house space and its delivery truck. Watching the recipients’ faces when they received a bed, a couch-whatever-was amazing. Paparella remembers delivering a gold lamp to a woman and watching her polish it lovingly, getting rid of dirt and fingerprints.
Today, Chairity has given furniture to nearly 200 young adults in homes across six Ohio counties. Paparella is convinced these contributions give the recipients hope and confidence. Leszyeski agrees. “It makes me feel like I’m not different from other people. My whole life, I’ve felt abnormal,” she says, “Now, I feel normal.”
24. Which doesn’t agree with Chairity of the text
A. It is located in Ohio.
B. It was founded by Paparella.
C. It is a nonprofit organization.
D. It provides furniture and household goods for the old.
25. What made Paparella first become aware of foster care
A. She got happiness from foster care.
B. Her parents were working at foster care.
C. Her parents were considering adopting a child.
D. She would make a lot of money from foster care.
26. What touched Paparella most at the age of 16
A. Living without parents. B. Moving into a new house.
C. Getting free truck delivery. D. Visiting a foster care center.
27. What does Leszyeski think of Chairity
A. It changes young adults’ whole life. B. It brings confidence to the recipients.
C. It has helped lots of homeless people. D. It makes people different from others.

All animals play. Running and rolling are ways for them to have fun. But it also seems to be how they communicate and strengthen bonds with each other.
When a dog comes up to another dog, front legs bowed or his tail high or wagging, his friend knows he wants to play. But new research shows that this play behavior is surprisingly similar when horses and dogs play.
“Up to now, most studies have focused on dog-human play due to the important implications that such studies have in understanding the special relationship we establish with our pets,” researchers from Italy wrote in the journal Behavioural Processes. “Here, we focused on social play between dogs and horses.”
To study communication among different species, Elisabetta Palagi and her colleagues from the University of Pisa found 20 YouTube videos of dogs and horses playing where their interactions(互动)lasted at least 30 seconds. They analyzed the videos, looking for specific patterns of play.
They found that while playing, both dogs and horses often had relaxed, open mouths, which is a common playful facial expression in animals. Some also copied each others' movements, like pretending to bite, playing with an object, or rolling on their backs on the ground. The team also found that the dogs and horses copied each other's facial expressions. This behavior, called rapid facial mimicry, has been seen before in dogs and sun bears, points out National Geographic. But it has never been documented between animals of different species.
“A 2000-pound horse can play with a relatively tiny dog because the two are able to communicate their intentions. It's an important study because it shows how two animals who look and behave so differently can manage to discuss how to play in a way that's comfortable for both,” Barbara Smuts, a behavioral ecologist at the University of Michigan, told National Geographic.
28. How does a dog express his intention to play
A. By bowing his back legs. B. By crossing his legs.
C. By waving his tail high. D. By raising his head.
29. How did Palagi's team study communication among different species
A. By referring to some books about animal species.
B. By analyzing videos of dogs playing with horses.
C. By playing with some dogs and horses separately.
D. By conducting an experiment on dogs and sun bears.
30. What does Palagi's study find
A. Dogs like to play with horses best.
B. Dogs and horses imitate each other's actions.
C. Animals show happiness by opening their mouths.
D. Different animals have different patterns of play.
31. What's Smuts' attitude to Palagi's research
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Opposed. D. Unconcerned.
D
“Eat together” is a statement that doctors use regularly when they talk with families about maintaining normal weight. Children who eat regular family meals tend to have lower rates of obesity (肥胖). A new study takes a look at why.
A team led by Jerica Berge asked the families of 120 children to record eight days of meals. Berge’s team sorted the interactions occurring at the table into two broad groups — those relating to the emotional atmosphere at the meal, such as how much the family members seemed to be enjoying the time together and how many uncomfortable silences occurred, and those involving food specifically, such as how many unpleasant feelings emerged from discussions about food and how much the parents controlled what and how much children ate.
Children who were overweight had family meals that included more negative emotional interactions compared to children who weren’t overweight. Their meals tended to have a warmer, more communicative atmosphere. For example, these children were encouraged to eat foods to get stronger or run faster, while heavier children experienced more negative pressures including threats and being made to feel guilty about those who can’t afford to eat three meals a day. If parents talked constantly throughout the meal about food, and lectured the children about homework or attempted to control what the children ate, the youngsters were also more likely to be heavy. Also, the researchers found heavier children tended to have shorter meals.
In the meantime, the current data suggests that simply sitting down at the same table at the same time isn’t enough to influence obesity. And it’s up to family doctors to help families understand how to take full advantage of having meals together.
32.On what basis did Berge’s team divide the subjects into two groups
A.Food served at three meals.
B.Atmosphere during dinner.
C.Conversations in the workaday life.
D.Interactions during family meals.
33.What did parents with non-obese children do at the table
A.They told the children to eat to get healthy.
B.They talked with the children about homework.
C.They asked the children to finish meals quickly.
D.They lectured the children about treasuring food.
34.What kind of tip should family doctors offer families
A.Cooking delicious meals.
B.Dieting in a healthy manner.
C.Making good use of dining together.
D.Creating shared conversation topics.
35.What does the passage mainly talk about
A.Obesity spreads across family members.
B.More and more children are becoming overweight.
C.Parents should give children freedom in food choices.
D.Sharing meals with parents reduces obesity in children.

There are many occasions to write a thank-you note, such as after a job interview or to express your thanks after someone has done you a favor. 36 Even if you didn’t ask for the gift or you said thank you when it was handed to you, it’s just one of those times when you should write a thank-you note.
Now it’s time to get down to how to write a thank-you note. 37 But it must mention the gift and your appreciation for the sender’s time and thoughtfulness.
38 Using words like “really amazing” when words like that have never come out of your mouth will come across as insincere (不真诚的). Try to use the same tone (语气) as you would to the reader in person.
Addressing your appreciation for the sender themselves will have a powerful effect. Mention something specific you love and appreciate about that person. 39
Just like you express your excitement for an event when you reply, you can keep the excitement going after the event too. 40 This shows that you value your relationship, which is more important than any gift. So end by mentioning the next time you might see them.
A. What you write should sound like you.
B. You can write the note as soon as possible.
C. This lets the sender know you received the gift.
D. You tell them that you are looking forward to seeing them again.
E. The note doesn’t have to be long — three or four sentences are fine.
F. For example, you can write “Your care for others has always touched me.”
G. But the most common occasion to send a thank-you note is after you receive a gift.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I’m Tia, a passionate teenage girl, living next door to the corner of 71st Street. It’s my corner. Most folks find there’s nothing there, just an empty lot. But to me, it’s like a wide-open treasure box. Stepping into it, I feel like leaping into a sea of green. The tall grass, probably just weeds, with butterflies gathering around, smells clean and fresh, and I wonder why I’m the only one who’s thankful for this place.
One evening, Mama said, “Tia, the city wants to turn that comer of yours into a parking lot.” I stopped in my tracks. “No! They can’t do that!”
“Tia, you have to make them see what you see. Make some noise about it. No one ever got any place by sitting back and staying quiet.” That night, I lay awake thinking for a long time. “I’ve got to do something.”
Early the next morning I dragged a chair down to the corner with a big cardboard on which I’d painted “No Parking Lot! Save Our Nature” in large letters. I sat down and waited. Most people passed by, paying no attention to me. My friend Tanya asked me what I was doing, and I told her. Then came Mrs. DiRisio, a beauty shop owner, who angrily waved her hand at my sign, saying. “My customers need a place to park. You go home, little girl.” But I didn’t move. Then I noticed a woman down the street taking pictures of my corner. She walked over to me, smiling, “I’m Sara Bennett. Can I talk to you ” I nodded. I knew I needed to make some noise. I started talking, and Ms. Bennett scribbled on a notepad. “A walking path would be nice, maybe a vegetable garden. And a bench, so people could sit down and listen to the birds singing.” I was surprised at myself, at how many ideas I’d got for this corner.
The next morning, my brother burst into my room with a morning paper. “Fighting for Nature on the Corner of 71st” was the title of the article, and along with it was a picture of me!
After breakfast my brother, Mama and I dragged our chairs and signs back to the corner.

【答案】
Dear Editor,
Recently, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of stray dogs wandering around our campus vicinity. This situation poses a potential safety hazard to students.
To address this issue, I propose that our school initiate a collaboration with local animal shelters. We could organize trap-neuter-release programs and promote awareness among students about not feeding these dogs, which might attract them further. Additionally, installing signage warning of stray dogs could also serve as a precaution.
Thank you for considering this matter.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
One possible version:
Dear Tom,
Knowing that you will study in my school as an exchange student and are eager to sign up for one of our school’s after-school clubs, I would like to recommend the Paper-cutting Club to you. The reasons for my recommendation are as follows.
Firstly, by learning Chinese paper-cutting, not only can you appreciate a wide range of paper cuts, but also you can gain insights into Chinese culture. Besides, there is no doubt that you can experience the delight which cutting out paper cuts on your own brings. As for the preparation for the club, you are supposed to bring a pair of scissors and arrive on time as required.
Hope you will like my recommendation and look forward to your coming.
Yours
Li Hua
Possible version:
To my amazement, I saw some familiar figures coming towards us. My friend Tanya and her family, each carrying a chair, joined us! “Tia, You’ve got some good ideas for this corner. We need a little nature around here.” More and more neighbors showed up, waving signs and making noise, including Mrs. DiRisio. Mom inspired me to make a speech to the city call. I did so days later. “If this is the last little bit of nature in our neighborhood,” I spoke, ”doesn’t it make sense to try and save it ” Everyone applauded at the end of my speech.
A year later, the sign on the corner has made it official. Now we’ve got a walking path that curves and winds its way through the 71st Street Nature Preserve. We’ve got a stone bench and plans for a vegetable garden. School groups come here to collect leaves and study the insects and birds. Folks come here to walk, run or just sit, talking, laughing and listening to birds singing. My corner isn’t just mine anymore, but I’m more than happy to share it.

W: Nothing particular. You can decorate our house with something red. Maybe you can write the character fu on red paper with a brush and stick them on our windows.
M: Good. I will give some to my friends from work as well. Do you remember Alex His birthday is on the first day of Chinese New Year. He will throw a party then. (10)
W: Such a nice gift. And I'll be in the kitchen making dumplings. Would you help me call our daughter over
M: Okay.
◆ Spring Festival couplets 春联
Text 8
W: Hi. I ordered a takeaway at 5:30p. m. and the application said that you would arrive at 6:00. (11) But it's 6:10 now. I'd like to know how much longer it will take.
M: I'm sorry, Miss. I'm already on my way. Does your number end with 2345
W: Yes. And the address is Lotus Apartment on Sixth Avenue.
M: Oh. I see. I was just confused about the way to your place, but I've figured it out now. You can apply for a refund on the application and get half of your money back. (12)
W: Never mind. I'll just wait for you.
M: Okay. I will arrive in five minutes.
W: Oh, by the way, when you reach the gate of the apartment, just call me and I'll come down to meet you. My doorbell is broken, so you can't get inside the building. (13)
M: Certainly.
W: Take your time and be careful.
M: Thank you.
Text 9(第17题为主旨大意题)
W: My new job requires marketing skills, I have gained some when working for a publishing house. But I think I need to find someone to teach me. (14)
M: It is better to know how to learn than to know.
W: What does that mean
M: It was said by Dr. Scuss, a famous cartoonist. It* means teaching yourself. Mastering skills is quite simple now that people have access to all kinds of information on the Internet. (15) But still few take full advantage of the Internet to study on their own.
W: Indeed. But how can I do that
M: Well, the traditional way of learning is to apply the right solution to a certain problem. That's to say, the solutions have already existed. So you don't have to take time to find them. But learning on your own needs the potential to find solutions. The more. the better.
W: I see. Actually, I found many of my colleagues are able to process and grasp new things easily. I'll ask them how they study independently. (16)
M: Good idea.
It is better to know how to learn than to know. 学会学习,而非知晓知识。
Text 10(第 18题为推断题)
M: When was the last time you walked down the streets in a city with a lot of skyscrapers I want to talk with you about the problem that exists in our towns and cities. We' re now surrounded by characterless buildings. I believe we' re living in a boring world. The buildings look the same everywhere now. Dull, flat and straight. (19) People say that these buildings are functional. That's enough. I'm a designer of buildings. And I've been told so many times that forms should follow functions. It sounds good, doesn’t it It seems as if any extra details are just silly and unnecessary decorations. But in my eyes, that idea is old- fashioned. I want to talk about a significant function of buildings that I believe is missing. The function of emotion. Buildings are meant to lift our spirits and make us feel warm. However, there's research showing that the buildings around us aren't just boring. They' re harming us. They' re bad for our mental health, causing stress when we walk around them. Now I'd like to show you a few examples of buildings my own studio has designed. And an international company has decided to cooperate with me. (20)
